Hey just wanna say thanks for the wealth of information on this channel. I just purchased a tascam 244 and I'm much less overwhelmed now

You mention flipping units on ebay, could you include your store page in the description?

Hello Mr. Tetrakan ! Can you please help ? Can 2 portastudios be synched together ? How about more than 2 ? What kind of device would I need to do the synching ? I know the particular portasudio unit has SMPTE capabilities for synching with drum machines and synths , and yes i am aware that I will need to sacrifice one track on each unit. Thank you !!!

Do you buy bulk packs of capacitors, or buy what you’ll need for the project? Do you have a preferred source?

When I srated out I gradually populated a multi compartment box with 20 or so common values . Rarer values or ones I go through in large quantities (10uf, 16v is really common for 80s Tascam mixers and amps for instance) I have a folder with poly pockets holding the different values. I tend to buy at least 50 of a value at a time from Farnell because they are based in the UK - Digikey has a wider range of stuff but they charge me more for postage and end up sending it to me from accross the atlantic and it takes weeks. I avoid resellers on ebay etc because the inherited wisdon from forum knowitalls is there are terrible awful counterfeits out there, though I've never encountered faulty fakes personally.

Really good, pragmatic approach you describe in the description - the time taken to carefully dismantle often far exceeds the cap' replacement time. I'd personally much rather spend another 15-30 minutes replacing all the electrolytics if one has gone, and get another 20+ years out of it, than have to go back in again, or even lose a piece of gear if the cap's on the PSU.

Agreed... with hindsight it'd have been better if I made this point during the video, thanks for taking the trouble to read the description

Yes, thanks! I've repaired a few of these and you're right, there are bad caps all over. Their voltage ratings are too low in general I think. Very nice that there's a very legible silkscreen on both the top and bottom of the boards though!

Agreed, usually the Yamaha PCBs are much more legible than their fostex and tascam counterparts

MT120 has a lot of caps problems

Agreed, altjpugh It's not a model I have worked on very often, the few I have had here all needed replacement capacitors. Thanks for watching!
