Despite Ewan’s denial about having an affair with Nicole Kidman during the filming of ‘Moulin Rouge,’ I believe 100% that he and Nicole had at very least, a fling. Their chemistry on set was UNDENIABLE and more than just acting. They had an affair which is why they meshed so well together. They had a small child they had just adopted a few years earlier, and he spoke openly in an interview the previous year about how he had even taken his wife's religion. They were very much a committed family, and he always came home to his wife and kids after long location shoots. There was no second home or separation prior. Apparently, he even stayed in a guest house on their property at first after he decided to walk out. The fact that he thanked his wife for always being there for him and thanked his girlfriend in his Golden Globe speech was just cruel.

They were both still legally married, and he wasn't even legally separated when they were photographed together kissing. It's just terrible that two people can look at spouses who have dedicated years and years to them and just walk away as if it didn't mean anything.

Like, he was literally just a few months away from starting shooting his second feature with her as the main female character when she did this, and he was shooting the film when the news broke the same month as their 7 year anniversary. He abandoned them to hook up with a younger woman, didn't have the decency to keep that private, and has the audacity to thank his wife and girlfriend in his Golden Globes speech before there was even a legal separation or filing for divorce, which he later initiated. Divorce and romantic breakups are one thing. Adultery and walking out on the family is another.
