Run Compressed Air Lines in Your Shop

How I ran compressed air lines through my shop: what parts I used, my thinking process along the way. The result is wonderful.
It's important to note that air hoses come in different sizes, and you will need fittings that match the size hose you use. The hose I used was 3/8". All the threaded fittings were 1/4". The hose barbs were 1/4" male to 3/8" barb.

We use to run miles of airlines in dairies, equipment rooms and shops. In our colder climate it is a concern about moisture in the lines even though we used PVC and the lines were sloped to a dump valve (which was just another ball valve). Good idea though and a good deal. I have air hose rolled up here and there around my shop and still haven’t done anything about it. Good job.

Whats really nice about this video is he shows connecting the air compressor to the piping system by removing the old connector and replacing it with a T. So many other videos just assume that step. Thanks for posting! Also going to check out Harbor Freight now.

One of my tricks is to chuck the shank of the screw hook in my drill with the hook pointing away from the chuck. Start the hook you are installing into the ceiling, wall, project, etc. and once started take my drill; hook both hooks together and run it in.. super time saver on open hooks. You can also do this with screw eyes, you just need to sacrifice one by cutting a large enough gap in the eye it will fit into the eye of the driven fastener. This trick is great for larger or longer hooks and eyes. Additionally, since you have curved mating surfaces, you get a small universal joint effect, just don’t get too jiggly with the u joint thing or it can (and will) teach you about science, physics, torque, rotation, and other stuff...

A couple of tips if you don't mind. #1, don't pull your take off's from the bottom of your distribution line. This will fill up with condensate water and feed directly into your tools. Always have the Tee side outlet facing up, you will have to run your main line a little lower on the wall but you can easily find the studs. #2, always have your main distribution line sloping from it's starting point to the farthermost end where you will install a drip leg with a condensate drain valve. These simple steps will go a long way to reducing the effects of the water in your air system.

@grahammedellin1013

Wood Tools Workshop just an idea of mine that worked fantastic, I got a free wine fridge that wasn’t cooling as much as he wanted. After seeing the California air tools cabinet for quiet operation I decided to mount the compressor pump/motor inside the fridge to silence the noise and hopefully cool the heat generated from the motor. Worked like a charm. Later I added 4 12v 5” computer fans to aid in the cooling, just had to drill holes in the floor of the fridge and back with baffles to aid In muffling. Adding the fans increased the noise generated but was crucial to the cooling. Also placing a compressor in a corner of a room or area will generate more noise than in the middle of a wall. Try using an old carpet rolled up Nd stood vertically to help with the noise and vibration. You will be amazed at the help it provides.

I liked your video but I have one suggestion that I started to use on my air lines and garden hoses. I have SS Pex clamps of several different sizes and found that using them instead of worm gear clamps worked better for me. If you happen to already have the crimper you might try it sometime.

I did something similar although I went full boat running lines. I wanted to get better at sweating copper pipes, so I ran 1/2 copper pipe throughout my garage and extended into my basement. It cost a lot more than the flexible tubing, however it is much more sturdy and is not prone to being pulled away from the wall and ceiling. I can't help but believe that constantly pulling on that coiled air hose from the ceiling will weaken the plastic anchor causing it to fail and the hose coming down. I took the time to find the studs and anchor the hangers to solid wood.

I just bought my first oil air compressor. It's an older model Campbell Hausfeld 3.5 hp oil air compressor w/a 20 gallon tank. It is WAY QUIETER than my old one, which is a small Charge Air Pro 1.5 hp oil-less w/a 3 gallon tank. I've was told that the oil air compressors need time to warm up in colder seasons, but it beats the heck out of having to listen to that little oil-less one run constantly when I'm using my brad nailer/stapler. Plus, it's large enough to power my impact gun, air ratchet, cut-off tool, air up tires, or whatever else I need it for 🙂👍🏻

I got the connectors and various parts (except the hose itself) at Harbor Freight, where they are surprisingly inexpensive. I don't recall how much it was, but tally up how many you'll need of what, and compare prices. Brass tees were about $2 each, connectors were like $1 each, I think the shutoff valve was $4. And they have kits that contain most of what you'll need. I'm not advertising for Harbor Freight, understand, that's just where I got my parts.

Yes, one thing I would do, and will do when I turn my mind to it, is to have drain valves for condensation at various places along the layout. I can drain it by decoupling the hose at the tank and letting it drip out from that, but there are areas where it won't naturally drain toward the coupling.
@diannesapp5984
@diannesapp5984 5 жыл бұрын
When I ran the pvc pipe around the shop at every down drop placed a tee then coupler with a valve so I could blow out the condensation. Florida the temperature is hot & humid 75% plus. I can make some kind of water. Plus the drain hose on the bottom of the tank which gets opened every time it’s used, amazing how much water it will produce in an afternoon, did I say it can produce some water?

@Woodtoolsworkshop
@Woodtoolsworkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, Magne! My idea is to locate those noisy items together in a corner and muffle them. Unlike my other power tools, I don't have to be standing by those when I use them, so I can put them out of the way and build an insulated wall around them. The air in my shop is generally filled with fine dust anyway, so I don't think there is that much difference by the dust collector.

Might want a coalescing filter and water separator here and there. Compressed air can't hold all the moisture the incoming air has in it, once it cools down after being compressed. You are going to get condensation that your air tools and especially paint guns won't like.

@@condor5635 yeah I remember it saying that on the display a while back LoL! I think I remember it being much quieter than it is now. I do get to use it a while lot more lately. I spent a nice penny on it I should have just bit the bullet and purchased something nice and big. I'd really like something at least 10-15cfm now that I've started doing some auto work around my shop I could really use it.

Stay busy dude. I bought a California Air Tools compressor for the wife. $155 and it's almost as quiet as the ones for $1000. Look into it man.

Would it have been cheaper to use PVC pipe to run along the walls and ceiling with conduit straps or metal plumbers tape. Using wall mounted pipe fitting at distribution points would look better but would have taken a little longer. Sometimes the quick-and-dirty method is the best option. This video was a good example of how to get something done quickly.

PVC pipe is unsafe for air lines. Google it to see why it's a bad idea. Basically when it breaks it shatters and becomes shrapnel.

Bruce L. A buddy of mine runs pvc in his shop and he runs 150-200psi through it. The trick is to make sure each joint is glued properly so it can handle the pressure. The bigger the pipe the less pressure it can handle. My buddy is using 3/4" pvc and it's rated 480psi @ 70F.

That 480psi rating is for liquids and not air. That's why they pressure test vessels using water and not air. If something full of water bursts it just leaks water. If something full of air bursts it turns the object (in this case, very brittle PVC) into deadly shrapnel. Google it and you'll see numerous examples of why it's a bad idea to use PVC for air lines. Your buddy's might be fine until it isn't.

work in the industry, have seen first hand when someone used PVC and it splintered and shattered everywhere, lucky no one was hurt, also if someone knocks/hits it. if you use PVC as air line to save a few dollars your crazy!!

Bruce L. I run PVC in my shop rated at 600 PSI. My buddy runs a professional shop. All air lines are PVC. In 25+ years, NEVER burst a line. Those air lines are rated much less than PVC.

If you just but a BOX over the air pump, it is a whole lot less distracting and annoying. Staple a bunch of old towels or curtains to the inside of anything, wood, plastic, whatever.

if you just use air to blow off dust and stuff with the blow guns this will work fine but trying to run any kind of air tools and all that hose length will become extremely noticeable with all the pressure and air flow loss, but good job on the install

Why ... you lost so much air pressure which something you barely had in the first place with compressor .. normally you don’t do this except with 60 gallons or bigger .. because you can run inch pipe around the shop and not really lose that much pressure ..

It gets the job done. One day I'll replace it with bigger-better, but it's not high on the priority list. I wear hearing protection in the shop anyway.
