This was the first "notable" big collaboration that was big on MTV at the time. By doing an old Aerosmith song it not only brought hip-hop and Run-DMC to the mainstream but it also revived Aerosmith's career being that they were in a [almost] decade long dry spell.

real story is,,, RUN DMC was "rappin" on walk this way 70's version , they were rappin on the musical part from the begginning and the never heard the vocal .... they wanted to make their OWN version of the song , but some manager asked DMC to try something with aerosmiths, at start they never wanted to make a DUO with aerosmiths ,,, well ..... Exactly!! I saw Aerosmith back in the 80's and Guns and Roses opened for them and they blew Aerosmith of the stage!! Steven sounded horrible! But then again they were both hooked on MR. BROWNSTONE at the time. There managers ended up separating the two bands while on the road.

Aerosmith had already had a long career, with many hits, before the hook-up with Run-DMC. They had also been through a split, intervention rehab and reunion, and their career needed a reboot. A-smith soared after this, and Run-DMC was okay for a while, until Jay had his very bad night at the studio, RIP. The End.

As a high schooler at the time this was the first collab with rock/rap and it gave us as children a doorway to our parents groups and say "see dad, aerosmith is playing with run d mc" It helped the rap industry solidify its genre and brought it more mainstream. It just plain opened doors for so many people and groups to come in the future. Big MOMENT in the rap industry.

Even in white middle class suburbia when RunDMC came out with their first tape everyone wanted it. It was like top priority on your christmas list. The only problem was that this was one of the first tapes to ever come out that you had to be a certain age to buy it because it contained explicit lyrics. This song was a number one hit for Aerosmith 10 years before they used it with Run DMC Def Jam records at this time was selling records but not a lot so Rick Rubin, who you probably know the name he’s a famous producer. He was their producer at the time they needed to get some kind of to push them out into the mainstream so they got together with Aerosmith and Aerosmith brought run DMC and hip-hop into the mainstream with this song right here. At this time, the Beastie Boys were riding a lot of run DMC’s lyrics and then Run DMC took it upon themselves to write their own lyrics and here we are. and yes, this is the first collaboration between a hip-hop or rap group and a rock ‘n’ roll group like I said before it in my comment, the Aerosmith brought run DMC into the mainstream, and therefore hip-hop went into the mainstream, so it all boils back to run DMC and Aerosmith pushing it out into the main stream.

This was the first collab I had ever heard. Actually, it was the first rap I had ever heard. It was odd to me. To suddenly hear "Walk This Way" being done by someone I did not recognize with a sound I did not recognize was quite unique. And then to hear Aerosmith coming in for the chorus? What a treat it was. In the 70's, there was an article written about foul lyrics in rock n roll. They quoted Walk This Way as being how music should be. Nice and wholesome... I am 50 years old. I was a teenager when they did this collaboration and I remember the next day… EVERYONE was talkin about it. It was the first collaboration and it set forth a great relationship between blacks and whites from where I was from. I’m from South Louisiana. It was the best thing we had all seen in a long time. Brought blacks and whites together significantly. I’ll never forget the day I witnessed the together on MTV.

Yes it was first collaboration between the two genres. When Steven heard that there was a hip hop group sampling “ this way” he was pissed. Then when the managers and executives got them to meet at the studio and bam it was Magic. My brother was in college and he said that when this version was released that it made it okay for blacks and whites to jam together and listen to music in different genres. Blacks didn’t think they’d enjoy rock and whites hip hip/rap but they did. Both group members have gave interviews and they all said the same.

This was a successful collaboration in all senses. Run DMC was a big act, but mostly in the rap genre. Aerosmith HAD been a big act, but were struggling due to band strife, drug use, etc. This huge hit relaunched Aerosmith's career and catapulted Run DMC into crossover territory. MTV was the vehicle; it might not have been possible without the video to go with it. It was genius. It is popular news fodder to discuss racial division, but we are really closer than we've ever been to the society we have only dreamt about. Keep the faith.

It's a classic for sure. I remember when it came out. I listen to all types of music my whole life and I've always played 3 instruments and sang since 4th grade and music has always been my escape. When these 2 giants came together it started something that couldn't be contained. I remember me and my best friend destroying his dads record collection trying to learn how to scratch on a regular record player...lol. My folks gave me their old record collection as a kid and it had everything in it fom "Jam on it" to Heart to Van Halen to Chuck Berry, Ozzy Osbourne, to Charlie Daniels. I used to carry around a suitcase style record player that had 2 6×9 speakers that you could detach and stretch across the room until i got my classic duel cassette deck boom box that took a shit load of D batteries or plugged in of course and had the old school equalizer across the front with the giant microphone plug and everyone carried around a piece of cardboard to throw down anywhere to breakdance on. Classic !!! I even got to see Aerosmith in the late 90s in Biloxi, Mississippi with my next door neighbor, it was amazing. 2 hot chicks were making out next to me the whole show...bad ass...lol.

This is what got run DMC into the rock n roll hall of fame one of only 6 rappers and the first in......so yeah they were Trend setters. At the time rappers would sample rock without paying royalties especially if they were part of the same record label, so this was a big deal because run DMC gave the rock group the recognition and it got Aerosmith back in the public light after a few really bad years. The rumor I heard was, in the 70's Aerpsmith was a hit. Then they fell into a drug addiction hole for a while and popularity went down. Then in the early 80s they were working on coming back. Run DMC were fans, having listened to Aerosmith growing up. Run was popular and reached out to Aerosmith offering to do a collaboration to help make them hip with a younger audience, I guess it worked :)

I've always thought that Hip Hop blew up when Break Dancin did, because that dance craze was a phenomenon across racial lines and all these movies about it started poppin up and those movies had soundtracks featuring these great artists like Run DMC, Cool Mo Dee, Ice T, etc. Suddenly that music was everywhere. Keep in mind, I lived in a small New England city known for it Rockwellian influence, and it wasn't until breakin hit that Hip Hop really permeated even my neck of the woods.

This was a great land mark in music. After this, a metal collaboration happened, Anthrax and Public Enemy. First they did I'm The Man, but look up Bring The Noise. Best Metal/Hard Core Rap Colab

#AsiiaandBJ This song is why the album RUN DMC - Raising Hell was my forth cassette and my first rap one. This was around 1987 cause I was 11. In 1983 Rap music and Thrash metal music were both getting little to know airplay, so the artists could barely afford to eat. Rap and Thrash were both bithed in NYC. Scott Ian the guitar player from thrash band ANTHRAX liked Rap music, he and the band wrote and recorded A rap song called "I'm The Man" in 1983. It was a cheasy attempt at a comedy song but the music and lyrics were rap. I think this song was the first rock ? rap track. In the 90s, Anthrax did a song with Public Enemy called "Bring The Noise" and Anthraax redid "I'm the man" with the Beastie Boys.

Run DMC were the first to incorporate rock guitar into rap music. They appealed to both rap and rock fans and their success was due to that crossover. Beastie Boys had a similar sound, toured with Run DMC and were also on the same label (Def Jam). If you want to react to more original old school hip hop I'd recommend "Planet rock" by Afrika Bambaata.
