This was an Epic turn is history. walk this way was a 70’s hit for Aerosmith. This collaboration was done in the late 80’s and introduced Aerosmith to Hip Hop and a young generation. You would totally Dig Aerosmith’s stuff! Run approached Aerosmith to do.

Hey now...86 isn't late 80's. I'm a mid 40's GenXer and every year is starting to count my friend, LMAO! I was 12 when this hit, and it was a great crossover that indeed introduced a lot of people to hip hop by being able to play this single on rock music radio stations. However, everyone I knew had already been into the genre (and also RUN DMC, LLCoolJ, Doug E Fresh and many others) for several years...we were lucky to have access to the NY scene and the music that came out in the early 80's where I lived in Orlando and Miami, FL. But I can agree that this became a huge success for both RUN DMC and Aerosmith. I remember that it put Aerosmith back on the map.

This collaboration made it ok for white suburban kids to like hip hop. This cover transformed rap/hip hop from an art form largely unknown outside the black community to the mainstream.

Actually if I recall correctly, run didn't approach Aerosmith it was a producer that brought them together in the end. Run was looking to use their song as a sample, or were already but a producer got with Steven Tyler (front-man of Aerosmith), who at first rejected the idea all together thinking it just noise. But when the producer brought in Run-DMC and Aerosmith at the same time, Steve and the gang actually got to hear what they were already doing with Run and it blew his mind wide open and he and the rest of the band actually loved it and ran in hole-hog on it.

This was an epic moment in music history! Never before had the two genres come together. Neither knew who the other was! It's been said that Aerosmith got to the studio first. When Run DMC arrived, they walked in and said, "Ah sh*t! It's the Rolling Stones"! Breaking through the wall was so symbolic! I remember impatiently waiting for the release of this video!

Run DMC was just going to cover this Aerosmith song by themselves. Then their management reached out to Aerosmith and they jumped at the chance to collaborate.

It wasn't Run-DMC's idea initially, they were just going to sample the song if they could get it from Aerosmith and get their permission. Initially Aerosmith hated the idea, especially Steven Tyler. But when a producer(I think) brought both teams in at the same time and played what they had so far with Run-DMC's sample based stuff, it blew their minds and THEN the band was all in on it. But yea, it wasn't a jump in at first sight thing.
@blainejeffries4498
@blainejeffries4498 3 жыл бұрын
Aerosmith DIDN"T JUMP at the chance. RUN-DMC needed their permission to cover the song, Steven didn't dig rap and wasn't cool with it at all. Rick Rueben, Run-Dmc's producer talked Aerosmith into coming in and meeting DMC and checking out what they were doing. Only then was Stevden won over by rge idea. But they most certainly didn't jump on the idea of their song being clipped.

All Rick Rubans idea. The man really knew talent and these two were two of the star producers latesr clients. He had the idea of combining a well known rock band, but who'd been off the scene for quite awhile due to band problems and drug addiction, were now back clean and sober and making a comeback. And RunDMC, who were still somewhat unknown and were getting pretty popular in the hood, but wanted to reach He felt these two styles could blend excellently together (couldn't agree more) and brought them together to calab on this Aerosmith number he felt would be a perfect song to rap to and a perfect way to help both groups with what they needed at the time. Rick's idea for the concept a video with these two should be breaking down walls. And so they busted an actual wall right down in the video. And both have continued breaking down walls ever since.

That's not really the truth. Rick may have gotten the groups together, but the truth is, Run DMC and JMJ had been playing the song for years in live sets. Early DJ's like Jam Mater Jay (RIP) would scour old disco, soul and rock records records looking for beats that the MC's could rap over. They used to play the first two bars of the intro of "Walk This Way" over and over while Darrell and Joe would rap over them. They also used Billy Squire's the "Big Beat" which can be heard on Run DMC's "Here we go (live) and Bob James's 'Take Me to the Mardi Gras' (Peter Piper). So they'd been using the song for years before Rick showed up. Rick's idea was for them to record the song straight up, but without the band already using the beat, he never would have had that idea.

Run DMC have Rock Box and King of Rock, that were harder far as Rock,, the reason this collab happened. My personal favorites are "Dream ON" by Aerosmith, and "Peter Piper" by Run DMC, which everyone should recognize the music to (still gets used). Beats to the Rhythm was good, Hard Times was sort of political, if you were a Wrestling fan, Down with The Kings is the Degeneration X song (DEGENERATION X!), but different words. Etc. Don't downplay Run DMC.. Aerosmith is legendary, but Run DMC actually changed the industry almost single handedly.

I'm old enough to remember before the big rap groups there were dozens, maybe hundreds of MC's that would put on local shows and they would talk over the record and play with the vinyl, scratching it and warping it, and that was called Warp and Rap. It was fun because you could go to some local place like a carnival, and they would be there putting on a show.

The members of Aerosmith had drug and alcohol problems that contributed to some of the original members leaving in the late 70's. When those members returned in the 80's, the band made a comeback. They have been, and continue to be, one of the most successful rock bands of all time. No disrespect to Run DMC, but their fame never even came close to that of Aerosmith. And Aerosmith did not need anyone to make them relevant. They've been relevant in rock since the 70's.

I must do this introduction and really hope to see your Reaction to this very important and different band in Rock history. Know as “a little ol’band from Texas”, ZZ Top. Three badasses from Texas, hell raisers that do their thing and if you don’t like it, they don’t care! Their rise in the 70’s was huge but, they rarely left the State of Texas. They were invited to play the Memphis Blues Festival - which was an all black artist blues festival. These three white cowboys took the stage and the first lick hit...it got everyone’s attention. This was it: Waiting on a bus/Jesus left chicago

I grew up w Aerosmith's Toy's in the Attic album, I believe their first. I remember it costing me $5.00 for the album at Strawberry's Records and Tapes Store. That was ALOT of $$ back then...lol. ☺️ I still have it and my Technic Turntable w/Diamond Head needle. I still own some 45's as well. And 8 track tapes....cassettes and now CD's. I usually listen to most music on my phone's music lists now. How times are a changing so quickly on us. History: RUN DMC said that in the 70's & 80's, they would buy rock record's that had the lyrics erased & free style over them. That's how it started, buying Aerosmith lyric free albums. Eventually their producers put them together.

react to the walk this way backwards and you'll see the truth in the music industry never singing this garbage again. 1 Corinthians 15:1 - Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 1 Corinthians 15:2 - By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:3 - For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 1 Corinthians 15:4 - And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Acts 16:30 - And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be Saved? Acts 16:31 - And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy House.

What Sylvester the Tester said is pretty much spot on. I can elaborate a little. Rick Rubin obviously the producer with Run's brother Russel Simmons. I believe it was a female producer though, but I wasn't there so.... Anyways, Run used to use the beginning of the song all the time for a break beat anyways (playing it over and over), and rapping over. So "whomever" just asked, why don't you just do the song? They never actually listened to it, and after hearing it thought it was way to country for them (southern rock). If you listen to Rock Box, you'll understand a bit. Anyways, Steven Tyler was back from trying to stick Peru up his nose, and was shocked anyone wanted to redo a song he was thinking they just did (almost 10 years had passed, lol). So neither was for it at first... but they were talked into it and both gave their best effort and this was the result. Over the years they did this song live many times... even did it once with Kid Rock, and Kid Rock did the Jam Master Jay tribute with Public Enemy's lead rapper Chuck D. Anthrax and Public Enemy were harder versions of Aerosmith and Run DMC.. meaning metal heads were into Anthrax, Rap heads into Public Enemy. Run DMC and Aerosmith crossover into mainstream throughout their careers.

Although the song was written & performed by Aerosmith 11 years prior, this collaboration/remix is the brainchild of producer Rick Rubin, co-founder of Def Jam Records.

Oh sweetie. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was repping for the Rockers. Hio-hop came in talking smach about the same things: anti-State, hard times all around. That had been rock's role. Check out the video of Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister smack down Tipper and Al Gore. It's a MUST for anyone interested in free speech and anti-cansorship.

THere is a really funny story about this song from Adam Horowitz from Beastie Boys, Back then Beasties were friends with Run DMC but hadn't made it yet. I do believe it was in Miami where Run DMC was playing and the encore is this song with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry playing live with him. I think it was Rev who told Adam to come out and play bass on the song (Beasties were a punk band before turning to rap and could actually play). Adam decides to back up to Joe Perry's back and play right next to him. Joe has this look on his face like Who The F'k Is This Guy! Adam tells is way better.

I think I agree with Texas Magnolia a couple of comments below. I'm so old that my freshman year of high school is when the Beatles hit. BTW, I met Eric Burdon, the lead singer of the Animals, and a New Orleans airport, I think in the spring of 1964 and got his autograph. He actually came to live in New Orleans, but I believe he left after the Katrina disaster in 2005. At any rate this is one of a handful of songs that changed my opinion of music. I really can't say I'm a fan of hip-hop at all, but this was borderline brilliant!
