what you have is an AC synchronous motor. At 60 Hz it turns at 72 RPM and starts and stops within 5 deg of shaft rotation. The capacitor needs to be an AC capacitor and chosen to give roughly 90 deg phase shift between the windings. SloSyn made 120V versions of these. You can count the waves of the AC line to position the system or use an encoder. It's just a stepper motor with 120V windings. Nice experiment. You might consider 2 back to back capacitors and 2 diodes.

sorry can you explain this more? I am not an electrical engineer and have little knowledge on motors and their wirings. Can you explain more in layman's terms?
@commenter4799 Жыл бұрын
@justin_704 I wouldn't call this a synchronous AC motor because this has permanent magnets, whereas an AC motor doesn't. What the other guy is saying is the speed of the motor is dependent on frequency and this isn't how this motor is designed to work. A stepper motor has windings on the stator (non-moving part) and running current through them produces a magnetic field that acts on the permanent magnets in the rotor. Like poles are repelled and opposite poles attract. One "step" is when current is run in the windings and the magnets move to states of equilibrium. To make it keep turning, the coils must be switched once per step. In a capacitor, current leads voltage by 90 degrees, thus, if you were to measure voltage and current, you'd see the sine waves shift so they were no longer in sync. This is why the different coils are powered at different times. I'd have to see a schematic to really know what's going on across the windings, but I'm guessing this isn't running very efficiently.

@@commenter4799 "In a capacitor, current leads voltage by 90 degrees, thus, if you were to measure voltage and current, you'd see the sine waves shift so they were no longer in sync." Did not follow your commentary. The output is d/c. So there are no sine waves here where the capacitor is connected. It just filters out the residual a/c component further?
@commenter47995 ай бұрын
@turanamo the output wouldn't be DC because the capacitor is across a winding, not the transformer. If it were, a single capacitor would make for a really bad low pass filter, but since there is no DC offset, it would just add an unnecessary reactive component. You really need a diode to get DC. The originated comment said you should put the voltage and current 90 degrees out of phase, but that would remove all real power, and no work would be done. This seems to be putting the two windings in series and a cap across one winding. The inductance of the windings and capacitance of the cap must be shifting the two windings out of phase enough to work, but it's a weird setup.

Hola es un buen video el que hiciste, te lo digo porque las mayorías solo ponen el motor a correr y no prueban la fuerza, yo te pregunto, si se le pone un capacitor más fuerte el motor tiene más fuerza?
@felixsantana559611 ай бұрын
Hello, what you made is a good video, I'm telling you because most people only run the motor and don't test the force. I ask you, if you put a stronger capacitor in it, will the motor have more force?
@pauliexcluded15 ай бұрын
This is effectively an AC motor now. What you need is to pick a cap which will have 90 degrees phase shift between the coils. That will give you maximum torque.

You converted a step motor in a normal motor, it works but it a waste of money, normal are cheaper and you use a step motor to precisely control the movement (CNC, 3D printers, scanners, printers, and a lot of other things)
@brazcomz3 жыл бұрын
It's not a waste of money... just the opposite... cause you can reuse motors from printers (etc...) in other applications. By doing that you can save a lot... Believe me, cause I made machines for almost 20 years, Cheers.

All motors are normal 😅
@neumanngregor Жыл бұрын
To clarify, "normal motor" as it seems its a big issue is a simple DC Motor, and i refer as normal as it "it does not need a driver circuit" to starts spinning, direction controlled by polarity and speed by voltage, those are dirt cheap. Second a step motor can be made into a "normal motor" but from a "normal motor" you can't make a step motor (yes if you rebuild it but then is no reuse anymore). Chill folks

No phone charger would be 5v dc he is using ac voltage a perfect ac voltage transformer would be the type used for those toy Tesla coils and they are ac type transformer 5v, you could use the phone charger over it you could somehow delete the bridge rectifier but just make sure it's outputting 2 amp because I think this stepper motor would be pushing the max limit of a regular 1am or .5 amp phone charger

It amazes me that nobody is concerned by the lazy, unprofessional way of connecting the mains power to the transformer... How many eleven year old experimenters are now going to think this is acceptable. If you are going to release videos like this, at least consider your WHOLE audience. At 120 volts someone might get an unpleasant surprise... at 220 volts, things could get a whole lot more serious! (Sometimes somebody has to say something unpopular and risk being branded "Safety Troll".)
