El-P's aren't cryptic, but they are profound.
@JRibs9 жыл бұрын
PanicFox What I mean by cryptic is that the lyrics have more properties that make them inaccessible on the first few listens. His lyrics contain more metaphors than Mike who paints clear images. Having more metaphors isn't better than being clear (of fucking course), but it does make the song more "cryptic"; as in, the song will take longer to decode to get a clear picture of what the artist is trying to say and do. Unless you think Nabokov is as easy to read as a Wikipedia page, you should agree. I'll defend my word choice to the death on this one.
@matthewsmith87609 жыл бұрын
You're selling Mikes verse short there IMO, whilst it isn't as cryptic as El-P's verse it still has some lines in there that a lot of people won't clock the true meaning of. The stuff about Mike being God Like/Fighting the Devil is genius, and unless you were aware of the Hebrew meaning of Michael you wouldn't get it without researching the line. Normally I'd feel that I'm reading too much in to it but not with RTJ, haha.

"Who are they to just take shit and hoard it? Who am I that I don't get my portion" gives me goosebumps everytime
@rellis881 Жыл бұрын
I love this song the song gives me goosebumps it and rages me one moment I have tears in my eyes the next but that's not what I want to talk about The thing that wears me out nowadays is the lyric about the hoarders and my portion and my question has been your portion of what this is the problem with our society nowadays you want your portion of someone else's shit if that person and when I say that person not talking about Jeff bezos dick head Zuckerberg Elon musk and some of the other billionaires that people say they make too much money and they're not giving their fair share giving their fair share what you know in the black community we call it counting other people's money but now we have a whole society that sit back and they count someone else's money or in the white community they call it pocket watching My thing is make your fortune but then people were like no the world is not fair they make it impossible they make it unfair well I hate to be the party pooper but nothing has ever been fair this is probably the fair is time in history shit do you know how hard it was during the industrial revolution but even before that after that way back no one was ever given anything we talk about women's rights equality how women didn't have a chance to do things back in the day and that's true nobody had a chance to do anything back in the day people had the audacity to just do shit if you look back through history there's always been standouts there were always women maybe not a bunch of women but there were always a fabulously wealthy woman somewhere in the world that went against convention some of these women few hundred years ago they even had men as fronts that took care of shit for them and some just had the audacity to do it out in the open there were black millionaires during slavery The point I'm trying to make is that it was always hard it was never easy ever never ever and people had more of an attitude of going out there taking what they needed what they want it it's just weird to me that people sit around talking about they want their share and my thing is and I know some of you were going to drag me for this but your share of what you want your share of someone else's shit you don't have a divine right to someone else's wealth unless I guess you take it that's what our history our civilization is all been about taking resources from one group distributing it to someone else you know I'm not even mad anymore of about the women's movement how they talk about they want to change shit to make it fair they want to take shit well they're actually just practicing warfare on another level you know they're actually breaking down barriers and taking shit without firing a shot it's the same thing that's been done throughout history you know there's no people on this planet except for maybe the Aborigines and Australia that hasn't used some type of warfare against another group of people to take their shit people act like the darlings of the Americas where the American Indians or what we call now native Americans shit those motherfuckers were taking each other's shit you know so the shit doesn't phase me I'm a descendant of slavery but there's always been slavery there's always been as long as there have been men walking this earth figured out a way to exploit another group for their resources and their labor is a resource but let's not go off on tangents here let's talk about our modern civilization what are the things that people seem to forget about when we sit around and we whine and yes I whine too I'm not immune to the great affliction called whining bitching moaning but if you look around these great cities that we live in it was industry that built these places I'm sorry to say for all of the snowflakes that think that this shit just sprang forth from the earth it did not it was industrialist that decided to set up shop usually close to a river because at one time that was the mode of transportation for goods I'm in Ohio actually Cincinnati Cincinnati was an industrial Mecca because the number one the Ohio River number two because of the Erie canal so everything here originally was because of goods coming in and going out industry I should have just said you know this city was actually built on I like the joke and say beer and sausage but there's a lot of industry here this is actually a blue collar city it's so wild compared to where I grew up at which is Columbus how there are still factories and residential neighborhoods here you actually go through Cincinnati and you have an appreciation for where the fucking wealth comes from and I'm not talking about the wealth in people's bank accounts their pockets I'm talking about the wealth of the urban society here everything here was built because of industry if you take the industry away the civilization goes away people came here and drove from the country during the industrial revolution actually Cincinnati's kind of a famous place for runaway slaves runaway slaves could come to Cincinnati and get fucking jobs you know so that goes back to you want your share of what motherfuckers always want their share of somebody else's shit but I guess that's just a human thing you want what you did not earn and then you whine and say you were not giving chance they don't pass chances out you cannot go to the chance tree and pick the chance fruit That's not the way it works you have to have the audacity you have to be audacious I won't go into my history but I work at a company I couldn't even believe I have a job here working in aerospace My track record from the early part of my life is fucked up you know but instead of whining about shit and all of the stuff that I have been involved in I went out and had the audacity to at one time start two different businesses when I was told that I wouldn't allowed to do that because of my track record maintain a full-time job and I know that it's not that easy for some I do realize that it breaks my heart to know that there are people that no matter how hard they try they can't catch a break I see some of these people on a daily basis and I hear people talk shit about them like they're just standing around congregating not doing shit what some people don't know is some of these people have been out putting in applications it's not that easy for some and others it is you know it's sometimes the luck of the draw but that still doesn't mean that you get your share of someone else's shit That's a mentality that we need to break we need to get out of that I want my share of your shit you know so I guess I'm saying that shit just makes no sense at all That's like if you work and you start a small business and then you got neighborhood people telling you they want your shit they want a share of your shit they want their share of what you've earned what you've made well that's the same thing with these billionaire industrialists you know it turned my stomach during COVID when Richard Branson was talking about going to shelter in place in his multi-million dollar yacht a lot of people took issue with that and I was like what the fuck he's a billionaire this is one of his homes it's his goddamn yacht what's the big deal and I realize that people were just mad because they don't have a billion dollars plus they don't have a yacht they don't have a state people are mad at Jeff bezos and Elon musk because their hobbies are playing in space but you got to realize that these are fucking multi-billionaires they do fucking multi billionaire shit their hobby is not playing cards it's not building a muscle car in their garage it's not breeding show dogs in the backyard That's what people that make $50,000 a year dude people who make $100,000 a year do people who have billions they have billion-dollar fucking hobbies like I guess what I'm saying is people get a goddamn grip your portion your portion of what you want your portion of somebody else's shit wake the fuck up or do what so many others have done before and create a mob and go take some shit That's something else that humans are really good for and I think I touched on that like earlier anyway sorry for this being so long-winded but I feel like instead of talking about shit be about shit you ain't never going to talk a billionaire out his shit these motherfuckers sit around and they're laughing at people talking about coming for their shit

They make a beautiful duo. Their lyrical symbiosis makes for neat dynamic. One of my faves, right here... I am by no means any kind of performer, however, I will leave that to those that do what they do. Giving credit where it is due is all. I also quite identify with Mike's part here too... Love the love, and empathy for one another!!! :)

[Verse 1: El-P] That was me in BK on Atlantic Never looked both ways, ran in traffic Pops went away but I stayed, vagrant Placed where the steel and cement became nature Love what you did with the place, it looks gorgeous Cityscape where the blood of good men courses And the dreamers are bull trapped in porcelain Take a knee to the gods and get horse shit Wanna live for the thrill? They'll arrange it Got a bevy of imps to spit hatred Shit'll get in your head and cause panic Have you desperately begging to get famous Get your dignity dirty and left orphaned Sanity on the fringe of distorted Who are they to just take shit and hoard it? Who am I that I don't get my portion? The most impressionable minds Get molested and informed by manipulating forces Don't fret little man, don't cry They can never take the energy inside you were born with Knowing that, understand you could never be poor You already won the war, you were born rich You can only take the energy you had Going back to the realm or the home where your lord is Whoever, whatever that lord is Couldn't give a fuck if you ever made fortunes Fuck anyone ever tryin' to run that punk shit Send 'em to the flames where the orcs live Them and the lost minds thinking they're smarter than us Don't understand love's importance And we can weaponize that, bring 'em back to the truth Where the ashes and dust got formed in [Verse 2: Killer Mike + El-P] The beat breaks and your teeth break Keep your canines embedded in my knuckles as a keepsake It would seem your veneers just mere souvenirs Falling out your mouth and on to the landscape Me and El-P do the secret handshake Then I pummel punch a pumpkin head punk in his pimple face 'Til he's punch drunk 'cause he's sweet as a pound cake (Ain't he pussy, Mike?) Yeah, El, I'll say Into the wild, wild style ghetto child running wild Where the lions and the owls stay The powers that be even offered up reprieves Told us they ain't take us out if we bow to our knees But they can give that to the kings and the queens And the worshipers of idols and followers of things 'Cause I would rather be in the jungle with the savages It's kill or be killed, and I'm working with the averages My professor emeritus Say we been cursed being brought to the AmeriKKKas How you raise a whole human single parent No marriages, no sense of heritage? Planned Parenthood helping plan miscarriages But I'm lucky mommy already had a narrative Product of a teenage love, my arrogance Derives from the pride in the job my parents did Named Mike, I was told it was godlike Even danced with the devil, came out alright Okay, honor y'all? No way Still spell AmeriKKKa with the triple K Word up to Spice 1 and O'Shea And any MC peeping what I go through Real rap, my last line's so true Rest in peace to Pimp C and Camu, too We do it for you
