After looking through all the comments I find it absolutely hilarious that people think this isn't Steve and that he's using a pick. Now I'm trying my hardest not to sound condescending but seriously people come on, the reason why this track sounds very clangy and percussive because well that's Steve's tone, and the reason why it almost sounds like a pick is because Steve grows his finger nails long on his index finger, middle finger, and his thumb. A lot of classical guitar players for example will grow their nails out as an alternative to a pick for a more natural tone, I know I do the same thing. And second this is Steve's track because if you listen closely you can hear the guitars in the background and that's because back in those days everyone use to record in the same room and bands as epic as maiden would tape these tracks in one take. Seriously people use your ears, play this along to the master recording and the bass will sync up perfectly.

I think it's him, you can hear the same track on the album, imo. But what's that about the same room? You shouldn't be able to hear that, wouldn't it have been recorded in separate takes for each instrument?

This sounds great. If you think this is fake, you aren't an experienced bass player. Steve plays very hard with his fingers and uses rotosound flatwound strings. This is obviously played with strong fingers on fresh rotosounds. And it is played very skillfully. You can't get that galloping feel with a pick. You can hear how some of the notes are hit with the fleshy part of the finger tip and some with the nail making a more scratchy percussive sound. People are hearing inflection, subtlety and nuance and calling it subpar playing. You're all too used to listening to computer generated and/or manipulated basslines! Listen to some John Paul Jones, Entwistle, Geezer Butler, Jack Bruce or Cliff Burton isolated tracks. All great players that play hard and noisy.

I hear you. I just began playing bass 2 1/2 years ago. After being a guitarist who always ended up as the vocalist for every band I was in. Anyway yes having sheet music tablature and countless videos for play through, isolated basslines, tutorials on how to work on your own bass I've learned how not only how to do everything on my p bass as tech that is. Also if this was back in 80s it would have probably taken me 10 years to learn to play what I've learned already in less than 3. Technology definitely has some benefits. On another note I really love Steve's tone. It's a big part of why I use a p bass with Flatwounds. I'm shocked more Rock N Roll/Heavy Metal bassist don't use this same setup. P bass with flats and a basic rig or even plugging into the p.a. directly will give you a tremendous sound.

This IS how bass sounds, fret buzz and rattling is perfectly normal percussive bass, most of that is drowned out by other high end stuff going on in the mix, and the low end comes out because all you've got down there is the kick drum so nothing is masking it

You guys are insane. This is Steve's bass playing track. Of course when you mix it in with everything else, you don't hear all the pings and stops from Steve's playing. That's what makes the track even better after everything is finalized. He has always played dirty. It's rock n roll! Of course over time equipment changes and things will sound different. I'm thinking the user got these bass tracks from Rock Band since these songs are on there. Whenever they add an original song to their marketplace, they purchase the original tracks by the owner and set them up for rock band. He's not using a pick. Everyone should know that if you play hard and gallop the strings, you will get that percussive sound in your tone. Have any of you tried the Steve Harris Rotosound bass strings? Those guys are clanky! There is also no need for people to be condescending just because we didn't experience Maiden in the 80's, but it's the internet, so carry on. -__-

Yes. He used the rotosound flats. They are heavy as hell. His action is probably really low from the tension of those strings. Steve in the mix sounds great but it is sloppy when isolated this is definitely him. I know that tone from those flats and that p bass. Listen to him live. It sounds pretty sloppy but hey. It works for him and the bass is a noisy instrument anyway!

These master tracks or mostly from Guitar Hero or Rock Band and there were often tracks recorded by other people wich is this case. You are insane if you think, his high notes sound like that with a fingers, because that is impossible. It isn't even percussive and Steve doesn't play percussive way. This is a pick.

Ijen Ayen The first guitar hero had plenty of tracks that were recorded by other people. That is why it would say "AS MADE FAMOUS BY". Even on the old Rockband market place, if there wasn't an original track for a song, the album cover picture would not show up and it would state "AS MADE FAMOUS BY". IF rock band purchased the rights to use an original song and posted a cover that claimed it was the original song would be considered illegal. This is the raw bass track, so before mixing and mastering. It was the 80's, and it was a pain to punch in. Now a days it doesn't make sense why anyone would use an entire track straight through, but that's the digital age for you. I am not boasting who I am in any way (because i have plenty to learn), but with the use of perfect pitch I can dissect what notes Steve is playing exactly as they are. If you're not sure about the high parts, try listening to another part of the song to determine if it is Steve playing. At the very end of the song Steve does a moving G blues walk down from one octave to another, and that is absolutely what he plays on the mastered and mixed track.

This HAS to be Steve's original track. It sounds exactly like his style and tone. And I was able to get this sound, and brighter, too, by just using roundwound strings with low action. All it is, is the strings clanking off of the fretboard. This song can be done with two fingers, and consistently, as I used to play through this album from start to finish, for my right-hand exercise. I was not only able to, in time, nail this track with two fingers, but also develop some serious speed for my old thrash band...no need for a pick, either (imagine Alex Webster only using two fingers). I need to practice more and do less typing!

For people thinking this is done with a pickup; no. This ís Steve Harris. He uses his nails for a nice punchy sound, together with flatwound snares (quite thick snares, so there's alot tension on the snares), with the Seymour Duncan SPB-4 pickups, which really pushes the midranges (sound), and yet also a tight bass and treble (also said on their site). That's why it sounds like using a pickup. But it's not. :) (Oh, and off course the type of wood is also important for the sound of a Bass, Steve uses an alder body and maple neck. - If you have a standard cheap P-Bass poplar body, you won't get that awesome sound *if you have the SPB-4 pickups*. Yet they do sound awesome)

Just a small correction here: triplets are NOT "three notes over one beat" like the traditional gallop rhythm (an 8th note followed by two 16th notes, taking up the same space as a 4th note beat) that Iron Maiden is using. Triplets are "three notes EVENLY SPACED OUT over one beat" and it sounds quite different.

The clicking sound is because he finger picks pushing the string toward the bass, laterally, rather than across the string, vertically, which causes the strings to vibrate 90 degrees from the axis that they normally would, which makes them hit the fret board, hence the clicking sound.

Remember that fingernails can be used to produce the clacky sound that is most often associated with picks. I despise using picks unless absolutely necessary, so I will grow my nails out to gain a similar sound to picking, despite it being pizzicato. I picked that idea up from ol' Steve Harris who said in Bass Player magazine that he does that to get the picked sound.

Hey, Kevin Kiso. I have to agree...I'm a bass player and I grew up listening to Iron Maiden. At some parts of the song it is hard even to identify the note and I it's just odd the way the looses the bit also.

This NEVER will be a pick. EVER: First, long nails. I also do it. Second, full speed obviously sounds dirty because a note hasn't stopped sounding when the next is being played. Don't believe me? Listen at John Myung's Learning to Live bass track. Sounds dirty, but when you play full speed, it uses to sound like that, and when you need to go the same pace than guitars, damn, I dare you to don't make it sound like this. Finally: when drums and guitars are also playing, bass is not that easy to say: Isclean, is not, or is a pick.

Steve also plays on top of the pickup. This location on P basses causes the string to bounce off the fretboard creating a satisfying click sound

Long nails have nothing to do with the tone... having slightly long nails stops you from playing fast

Search "Proof steve harris plays with two fingers" He states he only uses two. I met maiden in Aberdeen last year, and asked the man himself and he said always two fingers, he's experiemented with three but only uses two as he feels much more comfortable and thus able to sprint about like the 'arry we know and love live! No reason why he couldn't have used three that night though so we could all be right!

This seems to try aPhill Apector "walk of sound" technique as I hear two or three basses simultaneously.

This is definitely Steve. He has a distinctively pick-like tone thanks to using fingernails.

Flats actually make it easier to do! I switched it up and it all fell in line, because roundwounds are looser and have more of a texture to them, so your fingers catch easier, making it harder to play fast. Having smooth, tight, huge strings makes your fingers roll off them much easier, which helps play stuff like this with much less effort. Plus they last forever and are much easier on your fingers and frets. I'm never going back since I made the switch to thicker flats.

To me almost sounds like he's using a pick, but I guess I'm wrong... Maybe some stainless steel strings? Idk but can you "experts" tell me what kind of strings he's using? I understand he may be using to fingers but I get the same result with three.

it is possible...you just need to know how to do it...i am a bass player and he is one of my first and biggest influences in playin..i've been playing bass for 3 years now, and i learned it a year ago...with 2 fingers...it'all about practice...75% of people don't understand steve's 2-finger tehnique...i do, because i listen a lot, and then play the piece, and to me this part is very easy :)

I hate the paradigm of playing bass a certain or that using one way is better than the other....It shouldn't matter, you're making music whatever sounds good to you should be what you want. But the facts are the Steve doesn't picks he just has insane stamina with those fingers. Must have impressed a lot of women....

That's the Steve Harris tone, it sounds like a pick, but it's actually fingers. Besides, a pick would have much more attack and edge.
