Run V Run: Tom King Vs James Tynion IV on Batman

Now that Joshua Williamson is well into his Batman run, here are our thoughts on how his predecessors have fared against one another. With both King and Tynion serving as some of the biggest names in current comics, there is a lot to deconstruct in their respective approaches to The Dark Knight.

Editorial wanted to market 50 as real wedding, Tom never wanted to. That was his biggest regret. Tom never wanted to kill Alfred for real, that was also editorial.

that sucks because it made the whole run mostly negative for me as a result with a few brilliant issues sprinkled in

@dayandknight2146 I mean, not everyone. Some people literally say he sucks as a person just because they didn't like his writing and that's ridiculous.

Great video! I watched an interview King did with ComicPop, and Ric Grayson wasn't his idea, correct. All of City of Bane definitely feels like King had to do a hard compression of the big ticket items he had planned for the last 25 issues of his run (down to 10). There are definitely pieces of City of Bane story that feels like it suddenly just happened at the end, but that's a product of being rushed off of the book. Overall, I liked King's run, the themes he's introduced and developed are neat and I like his voice as a writer. I think overall editorial interventions weakened it, but there are no arcs I hate (or dislike), and several I really love. I would have been game for King to get the full 100 issues, but at least there's Bat/Cat.

I really don’t thing Tynion has topped his Detective comics run. I love all of his other work except his Batman run.

I personally prefer tynion run bc even though his run wasnt groundbreaking, he at leaat treated batman with respect and made him cool. Tom king ruined batman alfred tim drake flashpoint batman catwoman and nightwing (to an extent). Also for me. Joker war was more entertaining than war for jokes and riddles. I get how tom king wants to deconstruct batman and break him down to see if batman can be happy. But he basically turned batman weak and out of character like how batman punches tim drake. For me in city of bane batman regains his motivation bc of catwoman and beats bane by talking about his feelings. Fear state batman beats peacekeeper by using martial arts. Overall i respect ur opinion but for me i vastly prefer james tynion iv work bc at least he didnt ruin characters amd jad bland stories. James tynion iv events were better received and had more positive reviews compared to tom king.

Two bad runs back to back. It's like DC was actively trying to squander any hype Snyder and Cappulo built for the book. Editorial needs to pull it together. All DC has to do is get Batman right to keep the lights on.

Have you met nerds? We will hold grudges against creators for a LOOOOOOONG time if they mess up our favorite characters, I still haven't forgiven George Lucas for the Star Wars remasters and that happened before I was born.

Did anyone ever say War of Jokes and Riddles was King’s high point? I’ve never heard a good thing about that arc. And personally felt it was pretty terrible. Can you point me toward a positive review? I’m genuinely curious to find out how it’s defended.

Tynion’s run started out so good, but man did Fear State suck.

@@mitch-TOi think you should consider re reading fear state, when I re read fear state I actually found it really good then when it came out. I think the reason people didn’t like it was because it was treated like a huge event but if you just look at it as just another Batman story then I think you’ll like it
