I always miss having a tool like the one in your workshop. Hopefully one day I can have such a tool. Success always for you !!

Looks like you are on the right track Chuck, happy chip making my friend!

Get some shim stock and get the bearing sorted. You will get a lot better results with a tight bearing cap. Good going Chuck.

Will do, thanks Randy! It was with great interest that I re-watched your video on the collet closer and the welded bearing. I doubt I'll do that yet, but with Bronze so incredibly expensive I may eventually go that route.

Glad to see you figured it out. im in the middle of fitting a new backplate to my newly acquired 8" Cushman 3 jaw that i just picked up for my 1919 SB 13".

Wow, you've got a 13inch South bend from 1919 as well? That's so crazy...where did you get it? I'll look at my serial #'s to see how far apart they were built...that is so cool!

Knolltop Farms Im pretty sure we have spoken on the Practical Machinist forum. The serial number on mine is 21433.

You have made that lathe really nice Chuck.

Thanks for sharing. You may know this already but both bearings should be checked, also you can check the clearance with Plastigauge from an automotive supplier to determine what shims are needed. Besides measuring with instruments it's a good backup way to see actual clearance. Just a thought. Love old South bend lathes.

Thanks James, I will check out the gauge and see about getting one, it'll likely save me some $ on the shim-stock. I did check out front and back, as well as end-play, but failed to notice my memory had filled up...this camera is becoming a real handicap for me, and I'll be looking into a new one as soon as it can be afforded. Do you have any recommendations in that department? Aloha...Chuck

Knolltop Farms I wish I could help but I'm not a camera guy, after I move and get a bigger garage set up and finish with some surgeries I'm going to try making KZbin videos. There are a bunch of KZbin videos regarding Plastigauge, I usually buy what I need when I order from Jegs.com but it is available from AutoZone, Rockauto and other auto parts, I believe it's available in different ranges from .001-.020, it's a simple, cheap way to check. I checked my garage and my stock is already packed or I'd send some. Hope it helps

I got the reamers Chuck, thanks. As Randy Richards said, shim the caps.

I got the shim-stock on order...and glad you like the reamers, did you notice they reamed me for shipping? One day it's $3.75 and the day later they wanted $9.50 and acted like I had a third eye when I asked for the lower price! Oh well...

I didn't notice the shipping price, that sucks, let me send you some bucks via paypal. Coming into canada is always more expensive. I should have had you ship to my mother in laws place in Michigan.

Did I really say that? LOL, I didn't even notice, and being that this was the 2nd time shooting the same subject I can only imagine how rushed I seem to other folks... I'm still working out how to best overcome the inadequacies of my POS camera, and it's rapidly becoming a real handicap. Do you have any tips on a better one? The one I've got is just a point and shoot with HD video capability...pretty weak sauce. Thanks for putting up with me...Aloha, Chuck

Probably look at something focus free like a go pro or clone?
