Im late to the party, but gonna have to make a taper hole for a oil pump drive on a D-342 caterpillar engine. Im in the process of repairing this engine, and was about to install the oil pan, and noticed at the last second there was a burnt spot on the pump casting. Turned out there was a bushing there that has spun and destroyed the housing. Long story short, to replace the drive shaft, you have to set the gear clearance then mark the hole and then ream it for a taper pin as the new shaft comes with no hole. So your video is quite helpful as it occurred to me, Ive never had to make a taper hole before. Wish me luck, could be fun!

Thanks for sharing. You may know this already but both bearings should be checked, also you can check the clearance with Plastigauge from an automotive supplier to determine what shims are needed. Besides measuring with instruments it's a good backup way to see actual clearance. Just a thought. Love old South bend lathes.

Knolltop Farms I wish I could help but I'm not a camera guy, after I move and get a bigger garage set up and finish with some surgeries I'm going to try making KZbin videos. There are a bunch of KZbin videos regarding Plastigauge, I usually buy what I need when I order from Jegs.com but it is available from AutoZone, Rockauto and other auto parts, I believe it's available in different ranges from .001-.020, it's a simple, cheap way to check. I checked my garage and my stock is already packed or I'd send some. Hope it helps

first off make sure your spindle bearings are tight and within tolerance. After that take the chuck off the backplate and cut off the register of the backplate. Make sure you use a razor sharp high speed steel toolbit for machining the backplate. Carbide inserts are actually not sharp enough to get a good true cut on your lathe because it does not spin fast enough.

No way, NEVER be sorry for making a joke on my behalf! I'm not one to get my feelings hurt, and simple jokes or deep, thinky jokes to jokes about the shape of the planet, are all fair with me :) Not a big fan of hurtful 'jokes', but that's a much different subject. I survived growing up with the anit-haole racism in Hawaii by using humor, and it helped me keep all my teeth. Especially when I used simple, self-deprecating jokes, that could easily be understood... The point is, if you're making jokes here, you're doing it right, and that's how I want folks to feel. Aloha Eh', Mr. Cruiser...Chuck

Don't worry Chuck if run out of runout I have plenty of spare runout running around in my shop and you are welcome to run over and collect all of it. My chuck was like that and I tried mounting it in the other two positions and found one that was much better than the original that was running out like yours. Then I got a new larger chuck and was amazed to find it only running out about a thou and a half right out of the box, first try, had to check it three times as I was sure I was measuring it wrong. So having preconceived notions of a crappy chuck just because it originated somewhere in the Orient proved to be false (this time.).
@KnolltopFarms7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the laughs John, that's too funny. I have the same hopes for adjusting this one to run better, as I've learned some since installing it a year ago, and it is only "guaranteed" to run with a TIR of 0.0039, but that's better than now...and I might even get lucky like you did ;) Thanks again for stopping in, Aloha...Chuck
@RaysGarage7 жыл бұрын
Hey Chuck, Don't worry about the outside runout of the chuck, make sure it is very tight to the backing plate and the backing plate tight to the spindle. Then take a carbide end mill or a precision ground pin, chuck it up and check the runout, if its out you can grind your jaws true. Now, you don't have to do any of this for boring the drill chuck, leave the part you have chucked up and take about a 10 thou cut off it, should run true, zero runout. Then put the drill chuck back on and go to town on boring it. I hope this helps!
@KnolltopFarms7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ray, I'll check that out...what's weird is that I can't seem to get a mandrel to run true to the lathe, and that's why I wanted to true up the chuck. I shouldn't be getting 7thou runout on a just turned stub only .050" away from the jaws, so something fishy is going on. I'll try your suggestions again, but the bore just won't true up for some reason...there may be too much flex in my set-up and boring bar, would that cause it? Thanks again...Aloha, Chuck
@RaysGarage7 жыл бұрын
Take light cuts with a sharp tool. Another thought, check your spindle and verify its there is no movement there as well. Put your indicator on the outside of the chuck and push the opposite side, the indicator should not move.
@KnolltopFarms7 жыл бұрын
I will, and you should see how sharp these little carbide boring-bars I got are, they are like little hatchets, LOL! I'd be out there right now, but I had a couple of beers with Pop while watching the Cub game, and spending QT with him is top priority for me. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow after I figure it out...hopefully.
@experiencingtechnicaldiffi51847 жыл бұрын
If you grind the jaws when the body is out then the jaws won't be true to the scroll and will only work at that diameter. Picture moving the chuck 1" off center then grinding the jaws. It will chuck accurately at the diameter it was ground at but close down off center.
@RaysGarage7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are 100% correct but Chuck did say its mounted to a backing plate with almost zero runout, so I am assuming the shoulder that locks into the back of the chuck was machined to fit snug also has zero runout. and is tight but I should not have assumed, because you know what that could mean!
@dcstang677 жыл бұрын
You could put a piece of stock in the 3 jaw and turn a section to the largest diameter that the drill chuck will take. This way you have a 100% true mandrel to mount the drill chuck to.
@KnolltopFarms7 жыл бұрын
I've turned it in the attempt to get the mandrel to run true(and it's just under the max now), but there is still .005" in the mandrel...still trying stuff before tearing into the chuck, since that just doesn't make sense. I'll keep you all posted ASAP. Thanks for the help.

Hopefully you were able to just loosen the bolts between your backing plate and chuck and tap it around enough to true it up and it stays there when you tighten back up. Looking forward to how you went about it in the next part.
@KnolltopFarms7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan, I'm going to have to run a flat-ended drill bit into the mounting holes on the backing plate to do that. They have a conical taper from the regular bit I used originally, so even though the fit on the register was good and the bolt pattern lined up, there's not wiggle room to tap it in like Stefan and John Mills have showed. Trust me, I tried that, LOL! I'll be uploading more tomorrow and hopefully I can figure this puzzle out...Aloha, Chuck.
@kwd577 жыл бұрын
Why can't you just turn the shaft in the lathe chuck to true it up and fix the lathe chuck problem later.
@KnolltopFarms7 жыл бұрын
See, that's what I would normally do, straight forward and easy as pie, but there is something preventing me from even turning a stub-mandrel true to the lathe...I'm wondering if maybe my bearings are shot, it's a little baffling, and tomorrow when it's light, and more importanly I'm wide awake, I aim to go and tackle it. Thanks for the note, and I'll keep you posted...Aloha, Chuck
@experiencingtechnicaldiffi51847 жыл бұрын
Hi Chuck, interesting video here. If you have run out after taking a cut then the problem is either the spindle bearings are worn or need adjusting or the headstock is moving.The spindle will be in a different place when turning as opposed to when still due to the oil film dynamics. Too great an oil film(space) and the spindle moves around with cutting pressures. A pry bar or 2x4 and the indicator will tell you. It's a good idea to do the same to check the carriage. Tighten everything down then take another cut and check again. A part just turned should have near zero runout (of course you know that). Zero runout on the backing plate with runout on the chuck has to mean the chuck has moved on the plate. Or maybe if you had it off the plate, try putting it in the other positions. Also check the spindle flange and thread for damage or dirt. Although one would think that would show on the backing plate, if it is rocking it may not as the farther from the flange the greater the runout. Almost a tick at the flange can easily mean 7 thou six inches away. Hell of a lot more to these machines than most people would guess, isn't there. But also as Adam shows all the time if you want real accuracy, rigidity and grip use a 4-jaw. And you know you can't argue with Adam. Mike (o\!/o)

Thank you, I did find some disappointment in the main bearing, but may have 'fixed' it...a little. I will be needing to make a new set of Bronze Bearings sooner than later though, along with a new cross-slide leadscrew and nut...I'll be posting the finding tonight late. Aloha...Chuck
