Some sheep in Iceland are 'leadership sheep' (foristufé) They know their way and keep the flock together. Recently a farmer sent one (a ram) out to find some missing sheep and he came back with 3.

So happy for Brad that he's home for good. Heartwarming story. The "dog on demand" idea is awesome. Great way for dogs to get activities and help get them adopted. The ducks being watched over is a lovely story of humans doing right by animals.

For anyone who knows the "James Herriot" vet books, the author (Alf White? I think...) was a vet in Thirsk. In fact all the stories are based on his life there. His last student vet stayed, and has only fairly recently retired from the same practice (though it had moved to bigger premises over the years). Last I heard he was still working as a vet in another place as retirement didn't really stick 😂!

FYI... you can "borrow" a shelter dog at just about any shelter in the US. So if you're looking for the coolest date without any expectations, take a dog on a play day! You'll enjoy it and be helping out your local shelters. As well as all of those poor dogs that just cannot handle being locked in a cage.

When I was a child, I spent a summer on a chicken farm, (my great-uncle's farm) but he also had Suffolk sheep. Including a Grand Champion. I still, as a child, wanted a goat. Fast forward from 1982 to 2021 (freaking forty years!) and after the C*vid thing, I wanted some sheep. Jacob Sheep in particular. They had four horns, looked like both goats and miniature cows, and were sheep. Then fast forward to 2024, January, I got a tiny foundation herd of Nubian Dwarf goats. I love the goats, but I *LOVE* the sheep. They are absolutely awesome animals. Recently I re-homed one of my foundation animals. My favorite. I find that the joy is less intense without her. (But, realistically, a near 200 lb sheep who likes to jump in your lap, when you're 55, is just a little too too much). But I love my sheep. The goats are great, but the sheep are the best. My heart goes out to the bravery of Brad, who did the near-impossible, traveled without companionship for forty miles. That's heroic in sheep terms. Right now my Sheep Ram and my Goat Buck are hanging out together. I want to get my other ram out with the first one, and let the goat back with his girls. But it's hard to convince a ram he wants to hang out with the boys.

@kenyonbissett35122 күн бұрын
Brad is an Icelandic breed of sheep, specifically a Leadersheep. They are different than most sheep in several ways. One, they shed their wool, though it is usually sheared, it’s not necessary. Two, and most important for Brad is he is special within Icelandic sheep because he has a coveted special genetic gene, he is a leadersheep. Leadersheep are able to navigate their way home and to safety even in blizzards, leading the herd with them. This why Brad had no problem making his way home again. I’m sure his owners want him as his genetics are prized among Icelandics sheep breeders.

In the sixties when I was a kid we had a beagle dog named Peedie and he may have nipped at a neighbor, so Mom and Dad sent him 50 miles away to a farm permanently in spite of my protest. One month later I came home from school and Peedie was on our front porch and we did not send him back. Animals have a way of communicating with other animals that can help guide them, just like in the movie "101 Dalmatians."

I don't think people who don't raise livestock understand the Brad situation. He was being sent away as unrelated breeding stock and in order to stay with his mother and sister, in order to prevent inbreeding accidents, he will have to be castrated because where there's a female in heat, there's a dumb male who has no concerns about being related.
