Time for a Truck change / FORD Made In U.S.A. / Truck Camper Life

We just couldn't help ourselves. We did miss all the extra storage we had with our Ram 4500 with the skirted flatbed that we had last year so we decided to keep our eyes out for another similar truck. We found this 2020 Ford F450 Cab & Chassis truck with a CM skirted flatbed that only had 21,000 miles on it. We got a good deal on it so we traded in our 2022 Ford F350 on it. It gives us a lot more storage and a higher GVWR. Check out the video for more details.

We sold our 2014 Bigfoot 10.4 within one day of listing it online.
►2014 Bigfoot 10.4 Truck Camper - We got our 2014 Bigfoot 10.4 in August 2021 from RVOne near Charlotte, NC. Todd was headed to buy a brand new Bigfoot 10.4 just before we got the Lance 975 but when he got to Southland RV, it was sold. That's when we decided to go to the Lance 975. We knew at some point in the future we'd have a Bigfoot again and here it is.
►2021 Lance 975 - We got our new 2021 Lance 975 from Chattanooga Fish n Fun in Hixson, TN in August 2020. After looking at several models, we decided on the Lance 975 (Check out Brad's channel from Chattanooga Fish n Fun, he gives great, thorough overviews of some really nice boats and campers.) I’ve switched truck manufacturers many times. Once I stepped out of the whole “brand loyalty” mantra. I’ve had a gmc with the L5P Duramax which was a great driving truck ifs made it smooth. I’ve had 2 powerstroke which were really just the most well rounded of the bunch. And now on a 23 Ram 3500 which really shines with the Cummins and Aisin.

We installed a oughton RV Air Conditioner 15K Quiet AC Unit with Heat Pump, Remote Control RP-AC3800-W-KT about two years ago. It was lower profile. Can’t tell you how impressed we are with this unit. Yes expensive but the interior noise difference is significant and we have used the heat pump portion of the AC in 20 degree weather with no problems. Bought ours at RecPro

Glad to see a channel that actually takes time to include safety as a priority to building a setup. First channel I have seen in along time that has actually taken their rig across a scale or even run it up or down a hill fully loaded. I have to agree that air conditioner on the northern lite is ungodly loud. If one person is at the stove and one person is in the bunk you can not hear each other with the air running.

My 2022 F350 SRW 7.3 gas XLT is great. It has power folding mirrors and I can’t live without them now. Also I would hate not having that punch key entry pad. That thing is absolutely awesome.

I like the new rig! Having the storage on the CM truck bed would be really nice. We bought a new 2020 F-350 dually Power Stroke hauling a 2021 Lance 1172. The truck now has 49,000 miles on it and we’ve been very pleased. Back in the summer we took a month long, 5,800 mile, trip from north Texas to the west coast and the truck did really well. We have no complaints at all. We hope you guys enjoy yours as much as we have ours.

Great set up now. So much easier loading with flatbed too. Diesel exhaust brake on the hills sure comes in handy. I bought new 2024 Ram 3500 in market for a new NL 8’11 again now. The 24 Rams so have power folding and extending mirrors btw, long time in the making. Take care guys.

Congratulations! Sometimes it's takes a few (trucks and campers) to find the right one. This is THE rig I wanted and couldn't locate. We settled on a nice 16 Denali 1 Ton dually Duramax which is very capable hauling our NL 10.2

Very nice Todd , yeah ram has been lagging with those irritating non power telescoping mirrors. They finally got it together and on my new 2024 Ram duelly, they now have the power folding and telescoping. Bout time for sure. Take care.

I was telling my wife when I saw the video title, I said hun they're crazy! LOL. We have a 2020 Northern Lite 10.2 LE and couldn't stand the noise the A/C made either so I swapped it out with the RecPro and it's a night and day difference, worth every penny!

Build a dolly trailer and use one of those dolly battery/gas maneuvers to put the camper in the garage. I think harbor freight might have a base trailer to start you with.

Hi Guys, Look into the Dometic 12 volt ultra low profile A/C (RTX2000) to reduce that A/C height. Also that rear roof vent cover is quite large, look at the low profile MaxxFan Deluxe, the cover lowers when not in use. Just a couple of ideas to reduce the roof clearance for the ultimate RV garage you guys have. All looking good, stick with what works best. Cheers.

Ha, you guys are so entertaining. F450 love it just worried about payload with the truck package I wanted in a lariat, no sunroof of course. Like I mentioned in comment to one of your videos about a year ago, I dislike that dometic a/c as well. I have a NL 10-2. I’d love to change out that ac. Can’t wait to see what you guys do next. I'll be really curious to hear your opinion of the 7.3 vs. Power Stroke after some time. I love my deisel compared to my 6.0 gas. But the 7.3 is a monster. Hope you enjoy another “Found On Road Dead” Truck. The transmission in the Fords with a diesel on the F350’s and up don’t hold up. That’s why I’ve got a GMC DENALI 3500 HD with a #1 in class Allison Transmission! It’s the best in class transmission for any truck on the market. Had 2 Ford’s in the past and will never waste my money on another again. Good Luck my friends!!

Hello again. From what I remember with the previous Ram / flatbed setup you had, finding good and reasonable insurance rates became an issue. I’m curious how you remedied this issue for the new truck. As we are also in the market for a (not too distant now) future truck camper setup, we have been watching your channel very closely. When you did the last flatbed we decided to get the same setup too until you came across the insurance issue. Seeing your video, I contacted my insurance company and discovered the same problem and if I remember correctly they actually wouldn’t have covered the chassis cab at all. We slammed the brakes and changed direction going the Ford F-350 Lariat with the 7.3 Godzilla route. Actually, the “affectionately named Big Bubba truck” is on order (2024 F-350 dually Lariat ultimate package in white & the 7.3 Godzilla) and is scheduled to be built in the next few days. We are planning to do most of the modifications you guys did with your F-350 so it will be able to handle our dream camper, the Lance 1172. As soon as we get the truck setup it’s “camper shopping” time. Thank you sooooo much for all of the valuable information you provide in the videos, although you guys do make me dizzy with all of the changes. 😊

Thanks for watching our video and your nice comments. You are correct the insurance does cost more with our Ford F450 cab chassis truck than it did with our F350. I shopped around to about 10 different insurance companies with mixed results. I ended up using the same insurance company I did with our ram 4500 and that is Safeco insurance. I went directly to their website and contacted them and they were the cheapest that I found. I hope that helps, thanks again and safe travels.

If it is a new 450 or 550 register as a RV and it’s cheap insurance that’s the trick . And all states are not the same so check your state before you try this.

Hi my name is Stuart. I am in Naples Florida. I'm using my wife's KZbin channel. I have owned three Arctic fox products. All of them were over 5700 lb loaded. You do not need that much of a truck for a 4200 lb Northern light. Although it's a beautiful camper, absolutely, I think it's just overkill. I'm literally at 15,640 total weight with my camper and with my truck. I have a 2022 ram 3500 crew cab, long bed dually, icing transmission, high output. You cannot match the exhaust brake that's on the Cummins. I barely use the brakes. The exhaust brake does all the work and I ride around in tow haul and with the exhaust brake on max. Always just just my my deal. You guys enjoy. Keep keep you still need to get an Arctic fox or at least try one. I have an 11:40 with 600 Watts of solar on the top and loaded it weighs 5,900 lb if you guys ever come down to Florida look me up. And if you're ever on the Arctic Fox or the northern light groups on Facebook I'm on almost every group. But yeah I love the Northern light. I really do. I should have bought one. I had the chance I've owned three Arctic foxes and I have currently an audit Fox 1140 and a adventure 910 dry bath with the king bed and the monster u-shaped diner dinette and I like that one too but it's got to be sold😮😮😮😮😮

Hi Stewart, thanks for the comment. We may not need this much truck for our northern lite, but I’d rather have too much truck than not enough. But still once you add all the extra personal belongings, tools, etc. the weigh gets pretty heavy. We have looked at arctic fox campers, and they are very nice. But the problem is they are very tall and they’re extra height won’t work for us, because we are limited by our garage height. Thanks for watching and safe travels!

Looks to be a great combo. BTW we almost purchased your specific Northern Lite. We live in Lilburn and have had an older Lance for the 14 years. We're planning to get 10-2, but discovered our 2019 crew cab, 4wd, diesel 3500 srw truck was considerably short on load capacity. So just purchased new 21 foot fifth wheel. Not as compact as TC, but quite short. Fiberglass clamshell, and make in Canada (like the Northern Lite / Bigfoot). It is an Escape 5.0. Really like it so far.

Truck looks good i have a Lance 1172 and would like to have a Ford F600 at this time i have a ram 3500. i would not get a super c camper because if you have an engine problem on the diesel truck the cab needs to be lifted off the frame to remove the engine and if you cannot remove the camper, you cannot lift the cab. plus, i am a truck camper guy i like to remove the camper and use the truck and i could not launch my fishing boat with a super c. i understand the problems you are going through keep rolling.

Hi guys, congrats on the new rig, can't keep up with you two. I am looking to get either an f350 or 450 cab chassis and put a flat bed on it. For me, it comes down to rough ride with the 19.5 14-ply tires on 450, no tpms but better turning radius . If it was between 350 and 450, which would you get.../ as long as you didn't need the extra payload of the 450. thanks

F350 has a higher payload than the f450. F450 has higher tow rating

That’s a beautiful truck and camper set up. I personally think a truck camper looks better on a flatbed. I love the looks of the Ford F450’s and 550’s. Just not a fan of the Powerstroke since Ford started making them themselves. The original 7.3 Powerstroke made by International was a beast and best in my opinion.

6.0 Was made by International & so was the gap-bridger motor (first one using DEF) before they introduced the 7.3. The 6.0 has great reputation in everything but Ford pickups. UPS for instance, used them in their fleet for eons with little/no problems... but Ford's hand didn't touch any of those.

Is it a F-450 chassis body , or a F-450 pickup truck body , I heard that the chassis body trucks have a beefed up frame for bigger loads, like for tow truck , dump truck and heavier loads for work trucks, where the F-450 pickup trucks have a chassis like the F-350 pickup trucks.

I have the same camper but I just lemon lawed my 2022 Ford f450 due to the front end not wanting to track straight on uneven pavement. I have read this was corrected on the 2023 models but was wondering if your truck has that problem. I am back using my 2015 Ram dually but am probably going to order a 2024 f450 since the cab and steering are so much nicer than the Ram 3500. IMO the perfect truck would be the benefits of the Ford with the exhaust brake of the Cummins. I also was very surprised that the Ford got around 1mpg better than the Ram. What say you?

The things that concern me about the F450 is it has less cargo carrying capacity than the F350 because the F450 is a much heavier truck. Of course you guys have a lighter truck camper now so I’m sure you’re fine. My other concern is that Ford continues to use that Bosch CP4 fuel pump that has been proven to have a much higher failure rate and can essentially destroy your engine with no warning if it fails. Chevy stopped using it in 2016 and Ram finally stopped in 2020, but Ford is being hard-headed and continues to use it to this day. However you guys don’t keep your trucks for very long so the warranty will likely cover any problems. I look forward to hearing how it works out. Congrats on the new truck, looks good!👍

This chassis cab is a whole different league than the F450 pickup. You are correct that the F350 can carry more than a F450 pickup but does not come close to this truck.

What is the difference in GVWR between your F350 and the F450 chassis cab? Also, did you have to cut down your Happy Jacks or do they make them in the shorter length?

The gvwr on my F450 CC is 16,500 lbs. I actually added 6 inch extensions to the bottom of the Happijac’s because the bed height is taller with the flatbed. Thanks for watching!

Are you done trading? I am waiting on a 24 CC F450 to be delivered. We're wanting to get a Northern Lite 10.2. This will be our first truck camper, and I'm concerned about about being overweight when all is loaded. Predicting the payload near 5000#. It'll be just my wife and I and our lab, and a small motorcycle on a front hitch. That skirted flatbed you have on that truck sure seems like the way to go.

With the F450 CC and a gvwr of 16,500 like I have you should be in good shape if you are getting a NL 10-2. We need to weigh our setup but I’m pretty sure we are around 15K fully loaded. We’ll be weighing it soon. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

I should have said F450 CCLB. Will have a 14,000 GVWR

If it’s a F450 pick up, it will have a 14 GVWR but if it’s an F450 cab chassis it will have a 16,500 GWVR. So if you’re getting an F450 pick up it is possible you could exceed the 14,000 pound rating.

On my old flatbed set up, I bolted the spare to the headache rack. But on my new set up with the flatbed, I will carry a spare on a hitch mount spare tire carrier.

GVW is 14,000 right? At 9,600 empty and 3,500lbs 10-2, are you not risking exceeding the 14k GVW? I would be interested in seeing the weight when you are all loaded for camping….

It is a F450 cab and chassis truck with a 16,500 GVWR. The F450 pickup trucks only have a 14,000 GVWR. Thanks for watching!

I thought the last time you switched from RAM 4500 to Ford 3500 was the insurance was too expensive. Did you get better insurance rate on this Ford F450??

We didn’t change to the F350 because the insurance was cheaper. That was just a nice benefit of the F350. The insurance for our F450 is more expensive like on our Ram 4500. I just prefer a cab chassis truck with a flatbed which gives us extra storage. Thanks for watching!
