A quick view on the runes, runology, some runiforms, the idea of each runic character being associated with magic and/or empowering an object that contains a runic inscription, and finally the case of rune tattoos (with a particular example to illustrate). This video also contains a cat creating havoc and trying to eat my microphone on several occasions.

And Sól steals the show! 🤣 I am living for that photo-bombing cat! Been wondering when we'd see one do something like this. I usually watch your videos 2-3 times each because there's so much info in them, it takes me a bit to absorb it all. But I tell ya what -- I've seen this video thrice over now, and I still couldn't tell you what you were talking about when he (she?) looked at the camera! In all seriousness, though, I always thought that calling the esoteric use of runes "runology" was an incorrect use of the word, as well as an inappropriate use of "ology". I love how you've organized it by adding Runology as you did, keeping it separate from The Runes. Last, I didn't comment on a prior video wherein you told us you had a book of symbols coming out. I would SO buy that!!! We'll do what we can to get you out of your job and into your avocation! What a treat it would be to have Arith Härger on our bookshelf!

I've chosen to incorporate the Elder, as it is the one I am partial to, but I always enjoy your insight and perspective. Thank you for always giving us the truth, even when it isn't popular. What I find interesting is that the runes were an alphabet that eventually influenced (a little) the rune-stave magic, which inspired sigils, which influenced rune divination, in which modern users have assigned magical properties to historical runes!

Great video. I’ve been wanting a Old Norse Runic tattoo since I was a teenager. To this day, I haven’t gotten one. It’s taken years of research to make sure I translate it correctly and learn the language and understand the use of runes in writing. The point is, there’s no dumb website on Earth that you can copy and paste to get something spelled out. It takes a lot of thorough research. My recommendation, take your time and learn; plus, it helps you evaluate if this tattoo still has meaning to you and if you want to get it since you’ll have a lot of time to ponder about it.

Just a question that i found with a lot of diffrent answers in the sources that i read; the Elder Futhark its assosieted with proto-germanic lenguajes? maybe it is in another video, i will see the other videos soon. Did you ever heard about the theory (a minor one) of runics inscriptions in south américa? i don't have people to discuss the theme xD sorry for my bad english Greetings and a big handshake from Córdoba, Argentina!

Hi Arith I can only give this video a half thumbs up because i think you are being very remiss in your introductions. You always introduce yourself, but not Mr Thorstein nor your two cats, Freud would have a field day with your egotism. The expression btw is time and place not space. When people refer to futhark and say that is because it is the first letters of the ALPHABET, please remember that is exactly what the word alphabet is, derived from the first two Greek letters, alpha and beta. My understanding of the passage in the Havamal is Odinn's search for the hidden meanings of the runes because the passages that immediately follow refer to magical spells. I may be wrong, of course, but if you read it as one it makes sense, as you would think that if it was for the letter value of the runes it would follow on with a description of teaching man to write. I welcome any other interpretations of the account in the Havamal. Stay safe all.
3 жыл бұрын
I bet Mr. Thorstein made you say that. I know how close you two are :p I is curious the idea of letters and characters being magical symbols, and that is understandable. When a new type of script is introduced into a culture, it's usually via the Elite or the social class that governs that culture/society. It's always the powerful that have access to the new technologies and new cultural developments, and so everybody else who does not have access to them will consider such cultural developments to be magical, or at the very least something very important and powerful because they do not have access to it, since it's the Elite that governs that knowledge and keeps it a secret. This is perhaps more noticible in archaeology in the Neolithic and Chalcolithic, when the leaders of a settlement controlled technology and written expression, and we progressibily start to see in the urban development of settlements the places of the elite/leaders/chieftains progressively standing on raised grounds above the entire settlement. To the point that by the the Bronze Age in most settlements (especially in southern Europe) there's a great tower-like structure where the elite governs everything, and the leader or chieftain not only controlled the military, economy and politics, but also controlled the magical, which was usually the latest technological developments but also the power of reading and writing. Chieftains were literally seen as magicians, or wizards or sorcerers, not coincidentally simultaneously being the high-priests of the people they controlled and later on the priestly class separates itself from the chieftain, but still coming solely from the nobility or aristocracy (chosen from the richest and powerful families). So it's understandable why Odin was the god chosen to be related to the runes. Odin was solely the god of the Elite and wasn't even the most worshipped deity until becoming famous in the 13th century by behing equated with the Christian god. Odin was the god of the late Iron Age and Viking Period Scandinavian Elite - those who had the power and had access to the knowledge of reading and writting. Skalds performing at Scandinavian corts would praise the god of the Elite (Odin) reinforcing this deity's power over the spoken and written word and the characters used to express language, which was something for the privilleged (royalty, nobility, aristocracy). The great majority of the Scandinavian peoples of the Iron Age and Middle Ages were farmers, and did not have access to the knowledge of written forms (in this case, runiforms/rune scripts), and Odin wasn't their god, their gods being the most popular ones like Freyr, Freyja and Thor. So Odin was considered to be the great wizard possessor of great wisdom, as in- possessor of everything that the great majority of the population did not have access to because the Elite had controlled over what should and what shouldn't be given to the population. Therefore Odin is indeed the god of the Runes, or in other words, the god of the Elite that controlled new cultural developments because such developments were first introduced to the Elite and only after (slowly and progressively) introduced to the subjects that same Elite governed. Odin: the god of the Privileged. Thor: the god of the people.

@ After I was thinking about Dr Crawford and I suppose we should say that he is the top man in reconstructed Old Norse, he is constantly pointing out that the language that he uses is reconstructed and that we cannot be 100% sure that it's correct but the closest thing we have until now.
3 жыл бұрын
It's true. It's like speaking classical Latin and archaic and classical Greek. More often then not it's a reconstruction. In the case of classical Latin people usually focus on Eclesiastical Latin, but that leads to several mistsakes. But Old Norse is harder, I think.

also apparently the term "old norse" is a recent (17thc?) term that was used to describe only the language spoken by specifically the norwegians. recently some scholars have come to prefer the term "old nordic" when describing the old language (or group of languages?) spoken by the peoples of the north and scandinavia in general

I think in the use of magick sigils are just that. To use the symbols of your ancestors I believe add value to your connection to the source and breathe of life given. Runes I do agree are mostly perpetuated by the personal gnosis of many people But really that's most if not all craft/religious practices . Also the mass conversion destroyed alot of "acedemic" works to perpetuate its religious programming so there's that to consider also I think.

Sedvane og seid .. I think sed/seid/saying/ custom/.. But all know how French/English has a thousand words sounding the same, wit no relation to spelling. Sed of seid .. Well. I'd say the difference is clear. Way? Why would you want to say way, when you are talking about paths or Norwegian sti? Way ? Veg in current Norwegian. Road not sure how this tattoo will age. Probably gonna get a little LA type beauty treatments.

That has nothing to do with Germans, its Slavik thing. Vikings were small group of people, maybe a couple hundreds people, the whole paradigm is fake.

Fun! I first became aware of Runes in a New Age context and couldn't really take them seriously as tools for divination. To me it's just another writing system like Ogham or Cuneiform. I think the New Agers liked it because it was something they could carry around in their pocket. I have a pocket-sized Tarot deck so I'm fine, thank you. For divination you use whatever you have. As for the tattoos (ANY tattoos for that matter), what's important is what it means to the person who has it. Doesn't matter if that doesn't really look like a bird or whatever it's supposed to be. I've seen the same kind of language mish-mash done with Chinese and Japanese, which are _modern_ languages with local speakers who could assist with any translation you wanted to use. As for a "Live, Laugh, Love" 'tramp stamp' _suggested_ by Runes, no thank you!

It’s very dangerous to tattoo runes, not recommended by anyone who works with them

Mostly dangerous with bind runes. Individual runes generally aren't an issue
