Annotations by the expert: "After I had dealt with the Runneburg bag for a long time and also had some information that could not be found in the net, I built my first interpretation about seven years ago to the best of my knowledge. However, it was clear to me from the beginning that a real variant was only feasible if I could examine the original. With the help of the stitch channels and the sewing technique, the riddle of the inner compartment could be solved. The interesting thing about this bag is that it is dated between 1230-1260, a time when bags in this form were not common in Central Europe. The earliest illustrations of lining bags are taken from the Crusader Bible and the Codex Manesse. My research began with a conversation with the former chairman of the Runneburg Association, the archaeologist and finder of the bag Thomas Stolle. Through him I learned the exact circumstances of the find and that in 1989, due to the lack of comparable finds, it was not clear what the bag might have looked like. He referred me to the State Monument Office of Thuringia, with whom I was then in negotiations for several months. Dr. Thomas Grasselt of the TLDA finally made it possible for me to examine the bag live. Actually, I only wanted to see my theory confirmed on this day, but already when opening the bag a detail was visible which I never expected. Parts of my previous assumptions turned out to be a misinterpretation. So I started to examine especially the stitch channels in the leather. Stitches I expected to find in certain places were not there, but the actual ones were very revealing. Through comparisons with bags from the 14th century I suddenly realized that considering these aspects, there could only be one possibility. This is also supported by the fact that all stitch channels fit exactly together and pressure points of the contents can be seen in the leather. It is also very interesting that there is obviously a manufacturing defect documented here, as well as the repair of it." - Thies, 2020
Special credit goes to the Thuringian State Office for Monument Preservation and Archaeology and its staff. Without their help, this reconstruction would not have been possible!
