At roughly 0:40 Stuart describes the first layer as a "decompression" taping. I tape patella tendon's like this with rigid or K-tape when the situation calls for it. Can I get some clarification on the concept behind how it decompresses physiologically? Is it the idea that the tape's tension raises the underlying skin/fascia to decompress the tendon? I've always considered it more of a "reinforcement" concept - in that the tape is anchoring the tendon, externally supporting its load tolerance and thus altering sensory output. I guess you could go one step further and suggest the redistribution of load via external reinforcement can be considered as simultaneously decompressing the tendon? But I would rationalise it as creating a more "compression resistant" environment to reduce threat and nociceptive output. Or perhaps these concepts are one and the same and we just have a difference in nomenclature?

Hi John, im currently recovering from a knee op (10% lateral miniscus removed). I was planning on using rock tape like the way you described, just to give some support with correct tracking, when i return to running. Is there a certain number of weeks after i return running at which you would suggest to come off the tape, i.e not letting the knee become too dependant on the tape? Thanks!!
