World Record Progression: The Javelin

The Javelin has one of the most unique histories in track and field. Its renovations, records, and athletes, display a side of the sport that no one could have ever expected and is home to some of the greatest athletic achievements of all time.

It still astounds me that Zelezny nearly threw 100 meters even after the changes in the javelin were introduced. He was a monster of an athlete.

Zelezny's throw technique is wild. It looks like he is throwing a baseball, instead of a giant spear, the way his arm whips through so quickly.

Michael Landon, the actor who played Pa in Little House on the Prairie and Little Joe in Bonanza, was an excellent javelin thrower, with his 193 ft 4 in (58.93 m) toss in 1954 being the longest throw by a high schooler in the United States that year. Just thought you might like to know.

2009 Jan Zelezny was 42 years old and was coaching another Czech thrower Jakub Vadlejch. At practise session as an examble he throw 84,78m three years after retiring!!

Uwe Hohn didn't continue into the "new javelin" era in 1986 on due to a major back injury sustained after East German coaches pushed him too hard in the weight room. It wasn't due to the change in the javelin for him.

Nice video, I take a bit of issue with 22:42 though... Anderson Peters threw 90+ at 4 competitions last year before getting beat up on a boat and thrown overboard and ending his season, seems like he'll only get better from here. Johannes Vetter probably was the best prospect to throw 100 though, but I'm not sure if it will happen now with all his injuries. Is a shame as we might have to wait another generation for another prospect...

In 1970, Al Cantello was an assistant coach under Jim Gehrdes at the NAVAL ACADEMY. I was a triple jumper on the plebe squad and Al gave me A LOT of advice on that event. He was truly a man with EXTENSIVE track and field knowledge

Javelin could go back to times when skill was more important. That is shooting to target and long. Throws were measured before differently and it was important to throw straight ahead. Thats the original way.

I don’t really get how it’s ok to spin for discus and shot putt but not javelin. Also don’t understand why they wouldn’t just make a bigger field to throw if people were throwing it out of the traditional space. Instead they make the javelin harder to throw as far, yet there’s people trying to make the javelin go further by putting the grooves in it

What a stupid sport!! It might be the only one in history that continually nerfs itself. The fact that its meant to see how far a human can throw and when it was going to far they said "nah, its dangerous for the audience", imagine preventing a crazy feat that displays the limit of human ability and strength but not wanting it. Put it outside then if you want people to be safe.
