Been seeing quite a few comments regarding the legitimacy of the current equipped deadlift records, so I'll just rehash what I replied to someone else earlier, along with some other things: There's no such thing as a "sanctioned competition" in strongman since there's no one governing body in strongman that can dictate as such. No one overlooks what constitutes as an "official" world record, therefore, it's up to the community to determine what is/isn't legitimate (which is a problem in of itself) Semantics aside, it's fairly obvious that Eddie got to choose when he wanted to lift at Giants Live, and if you watched the full video, Brian Shaw's Q&A more or less confirms the entire event was setup for Eddie and Eddie alone; even if Benni and Jerry got to attempt the record too. The "multiple lifters" argument goes out the window because Eddie could stroll up and attempt the record whenever he pleased, allegedly of course. Therefore, Hafthor's record attempt shows virtually no differences from Eddie aside from Giants Live being "official", and if anything, Thor's has more legitimacy since the plates were weighed/calibrated on stream and his breaks replicated an actual competition's much more reasonable than Eddie's did imo. tl;dr: Both records are phenomenal and completely legitimate by strongman's own standards, and tangentially, if it weren't for Eddie, Eddie's Brother, and Colin being the primary stakeholders of the Official Strongman (Now titled "Giants Live STRONGMAN") KZbin channel/company, Thor's record would be much more shared/revered throughout the internet, but it's obvious why it's not. I know this statement will blindly lead people to believe I'm somehow a "Thor fanboy", but I've been unsubbed from both Eddie and Thor ever since the boxing shenanigans lmao. Also, my job is to just document sports history as it is and give my own interpretation of the facts presented to me to properly analyze everything, which can obviously lead fans of the sport to be disgruntled at what they're hearing if they're fans of certain athletes, but that's not a concern to me at the end of the day as long as what's being stated is researched and presented fairly. Anyways, I wasn't expecting this video to randomly start gaining traction, especially since I do Track & Field content now (fun fact, this vid was released in Oct 2021 on a different channel, but was reuploaded to this channel in May 2022). Unfortunately, I probably won't be pursuing strongman content any further since I've lost interest in the sport anyways. This video was made mostly as a passion project and was my first sports documentary ever. A Log Lift WR vid exists, but it's unlisted and can only be found on Reddit. Also final edit: Yes, I used specifically imperial measurements at the beginning of the video, it was intentional lmao (since back when most of these records were measured in lbs). It seems like people that complained about this didn't even bother to make it much further into the video, because you would see I strictly used kg measurements with lb conversions shortly after. Hope this clears things up.

Yes, you’re a Thor fan boy. There are organizations that have regularly sanctioned official competition. That has been establish. Thor went outside those groups and what he did was no different than hiring your own official to record your track run and claim it is an official competition record. It is an unofficial personal record.
@RunnerBoi
@RunnerBoi Жыл бұрын
@@JRake32 @JRake32 The Bowerman Track club hosted their own event to break the 5k American record during the pandemic, but since they were able to get it *sanctioned* by USATF an actual, credited federation, the times counted despite the circumstances being unconventional compared to other track meets. Strongman objetively doesn't have a federation to sanction anything, so realistically, anything that even remotely resembles an official event (judges, calibrated weights, etc) is fair game.

Eddie did the impossible, Thor did the possible. He also advanced one of the most contested records on the planet by more than 7.5% in one stroke. It's like if someone came and ran a sub-9 second 100m.
@afrobuddy4801
@afrobuddy4801 5 ай бұрын
@@branominal lol relax not the same thing at all. Improving the WR in the 100m by over 1% is astronomical. Only Usain Bolt has done this since the introduction of electronic timing. Sub 9, would be a 6% increase and would be impossible. It would be like an athlete running the current WR of 9.58 all the way back in the early 1900, going from a 10.20 straight to 9.58. That is over a 100 years before it was set so way ahead of it time and mind you the WR that bolt set is already a record that is way ahead of it time and thought to be impossible and it is currently the longest standing 100m record in history.
@branominal
@branominal 5 ай бұрын
@@afrobuddy4801 yes, exactly. From 2006 to 2016 the deadlift record only increased by 1.8% (455-463), comparable to the record progression for the 100m from 1999 to Bolt's record in 2009 (9.79 to 9.58, or 2.2%) Then someone going sub-9 would be a 6.4% progression, so actually a 7.5% improvement would be more like someone running about 8.91 seconds

@apeekintime
@apeekintime Жыл бұрын
Figure 8s pretty much eliminate the need for grip at all but that's not why the record exploded. We've seen powerlifters at much lower body weights start pulling 420-440 with mixed grip and many strongmen and powerlifters hitting 465 with normal straps. While the field isn't improving the 500/501kg mark yet the number of athletes pulling 1,000+ lbs seems to grow by leaps and bounds each year (though still a VERY small crowd). Go watch Jamaal or a few of the other insane powerlifters pulling 460+ with straps and no suit, it's insane.

A nosebleed is not necessarily as bad as it looks. A nosebleed can happen when an athlete's blood pressure spikes, the blood vessels in the nose are pretty weak and break easily. Deadlifts are supposed to spike your blood pressure and it's usually not a bad thing. Eddie did have some pretty bad symptoms after the 500kg lift, though. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Kind of interesting to se the footage of Don Cundy from NRK (Norwegian tv channel from lifts done in Norway), and talking about the lift, not mentioning that Torkel Ravndal actually outlifted Cundy even at that time and event in the video. And Torkel was probably one of the strongest deadlifters in the world until some time in the 80's. Often dominating dead lift disciplines in strong men competiotions whenever he attended them. In 1970 during a Nordic competition he liftet 373kg or 822lb. His highest official approved record was 375kg or 827lb and unofficial lift was 402,5kg or 887lb and 270kg/595lb one handed. Search up his name and have a look on some of the old videos. And have a look at how he dominates the deadlift disciplines in the strong man competions like "Viking" etc.

I thought about doing a full follow-up video detailing every single person that has had the potential to break it + the competitions they used to attempt it (Karu, Makarov, Maheripourehir, Nakonechnyy, Browner, etc), but the idea never fell through unfortunately. I wouldn't rule it out entirely though! Maybe if I need a palette cleanser/break from Track content, I'll make another strength sports WR vid on the side for fun. Seeing this vid blow up was a shock, but nevertheless an extremely welcoming surprise since I have a great appreciation for strength sports history, and it's my first ever full-length sports documentary. Although there are clearly some great up and coming athletes in deadlift and alot of people that are lighter than Eddie pulling similar weight sumo in the gym like Jamal for me Eddie will always be the goat of the deadlift for going into such Uncharted Territory and him willing to risk it all for glory

Notice how Eddie says he is the strictest ref in world after he dropped the 461 attempt but then basically questions his integrity by claiming thors 501 attempt can't be called legit even with the same ref being the one to judge it
