We're getting to grips with the challenges of running a moving business this week. Hunting down deliveries, baking cakes and training up on the coffee machine, it's been a big week for the cafe boat :-)

For those of you just joining us, welcome! We're Vic and Jo and we've been narrowboating around the UK for the last few years on our 54ft narrowboat Zero. Last year we decided to give up our jobs in the city and add another boat to our fleet in hope of turning it into a travelling cafe and becoming full time boating baristas.

Their is a hockey team here in North America that is called The Detroit Redwings that, many decades ago, was sponsored by Redwing Shoes, who I believe derived their name from your local seasonal bird, the world famous, lovely and no doubt talented, Redwing! Love your channel. The coffee smells terrific and we're on Cape Cod Massachusetts USA! Great concept! There are high end food trucks that travel a route (Monday here, Tuesday there) another thing we've seen is Food trucks that post their location on Facebook or have apps to follow them. Now, some people have a continuous cruising licence, so every few days you have to move on ( lockdown accepted ). So how do CRT enforce this because surely even they cannot go along every towpath every 48 hours to check nobody is breaking the rules? We were given dispensation to wait at 24 hour moorings for 72 hours due to a water shortage once, just wondering, great vid as ever, you are inspirational to us all and i wish you every success with your enterprise.

Hiya! CRT do weekly checks I think, so they walk the towpath each week and make a note of the boats that are there. I think they trust boaters to comply with the 48hr mooring notices (normally if its a 24/48 hr notice it means the mooring is in high demand so you'll normally get nudged on by other boaters waiting to moor there rather than CRT, unless other boaters get CRT involved) I think most people just respect the rules and move on so they don't cause any trouble to other boaters! Have you tackled the issue of your customers having to bend WAYYY over to get coffee and treats? I mean they stand at the same level as your shoulders when you prep. Perhaps a rack you can hang on the window with a shelf that you can lift the goodies onto and make it a bit easier for them to reach, especially the older folks. Any plans to offer seating on Holly after the covid restrictions are lifted? Just a thought. We love your vids.

Hey Rocket! We haven't had any problems with this so far, Vic has long arms so he just passes drinks up to people, they don't have to bend much usually! That might change when we move and the canal bank/water level is different but we'll have to figure that out as we go. We are going to have some seating outside this summer and then think about seating inside for next year perhaps. It's a lot trickier to have people on board though due to access/insurance etc. Thanks for your comment!

You need easy peasy fruit cake, put Yr butter, fruit sugar water etc on stove top bring to boil leave to cool add Yr eggs flour etc bake! It really is a no brainer keeps well. The one I've used for years is Mary Berry Norfolk fruit cake with ginger. I leave out the ginger but that's personal taste. I also use the extra juicy mixed fruit. It really will fly out the door with your customers...

Vic, don't ever change!, loving the "artistic" content! I would suggest you do baking and Holly stuff whilst you are between customers, so as to fill your time, rather than having to be shut to make cakes, combine the activities, just a thought, not sure whether you would be happy multi-tasking but it might help for a more productive day?

Get a metal stencil of your cafe boat logo and then put it atop the latte and shake the chocolate/cinnamon/whatever overtop to leave behind the logo on the latte... that way if you mess up the leaf pour it still looks kool with your logo on it.

You Tube made a major mistake! They recommended a channel about Narrow Boats on the canals of England about 3 weeks ago. WTF are narrow boats - who knew there even were canals in England and why this, I like RVs, trucks and fix-it channels. When you are 76 years old living in Virginia USA, you don’t like change. Always enjoy your videos. Wish I could come by a mocha and some cake. We did get up to the Hotsprings for some good soaking. Still below freezing here. Maybe melting will start in a couple weeks. Take care.
