We don't say this sort of thing very often because we worry it sounds glib and insincere but honestly, thanks so much for all your kind words and encouragement. We've been really excited to start making videos again but we weren't quite ready for how grateful we'd be to have such a great community to come back to. Sorry if there's been loads of adverts during this episode; because of a slight (and might we say 'fair enough') copyright infringement dispute, we've not been in control of the adverts. Apologies if this is old news to you. We started and ran a community café in the past. a) we trained new staff on foaming milk by using water with washing up liquid in the jug. Much cheaper than milk. Can practice lots for almost no cost. b) if you haven't found James Hoffmann's channel then highly recommended (eg playlist on dialling in an espresso). c) some big bright flags, boards out 24x7 with your opening times and prices, some garden chairs on the towpath (and bins for rubbish, recycling and composting). Also boards at all the nearby accesses onto the towpath (Holly the Café Boat 5 mins walk this way). Good luck, if your coffee is as good as Holly looks then should do well 😊☕ d) humidity and temperature variations are going to be a challenge with the coffee beans. Will take a lot of tasting and practice to know how to adjust the grinder dose and fineness. Will probably need adjusting through the day and we found it takes a lot of learning to get people confident that they know what to adjust when coffee is not right.

Sandwich boards on the tow path, and as Dave says 3 or 4 plastic stacking chairs and 2 small tables on the tow path if width permits, good for serving from the hatch in these COVID times, soft ambient music in the cafe. I know its still cold but you could dress a little differently, either formal black and white or continue Holly's theme, either way Vic you need to lose the woolly hat when working.......looks like a bargee hat! ;-/

Can you imagine what the canals would be like if every container, on the trains behind Vic chopping wood at 03:15, was being carried on its own narrow boat across the network. Makes you realise just how transformative the coming of the railway was. I'm so enjoying catching up from the start. Loving watching the progress as Holly comes together into a viable business for you. Great music choices in this vlog, really adds to the professionalism you bring to the production,. This doesn't feel like a KZbin channel in many ways.

I know this is an older video - I’m catching up ❤ But the bits like - “Erewash, I’m still on the Erewash” with the clever editing....these are the bits that I absolutely love. They are just so clever and very very funny. My other favourite was the Fantasia editing scenes with the flipping shadows. I was laughing so much I had tears in my eyes. Wonderful vlog! I just discovered you and wonder how you will manage with the lockdowns I read about in the UK. When you admitted how nervous you were at your first “customer” it brought back memories of when my late wife and I retired in 1987 and started a B&B on an island in Lake Ontario. We did a “dry run” with two couples who couldn’t find a vacancy and the local tourist bureau phoned us even though we weren’t officially open as the fitted carpet people had let us down. We didn’t charge them and it was a delightful experience. B&B people are pre-screened, in the sense they are rather special people, and I suspect people on “canal time” will be the same. You’ll get the odd nut case, but if you two have half the fun we did you will never regret your decision. I will subscribe and follow you now, and I wish you well in the years ahead. Lovely to see you back and making coffee, you’ll be high as a kite on caffeine while you practice. I love your new haircut by the way, it really suits you, fresh and on point 🤩. If so Swakestone Lock gets a lot of runners, Mountain Bikers, dog walkers and gongoozlers, the only other thing I will say is I only drink decaf, and adding Monin Gingerbread coffee syrup (other flavours are available) will up your game with the frothy coffee :)

Hi BB. Great message to them and I am not arguing at all. But I was a tad disappointed to see your ref to the lock-down. Yes, we all hate it - I am a photographer and simply have not been able to go where I want to work, etc etc. But my wife works in the NHS and the health crisis is very real - people are dying in horrid numbers (more than WWII now in one year). Businesses have collapsed and people are unemployed (I am self-employed but since I have no jobs at present...). Also, not only are people dying, there is a horrid level of morbidity - both during the initial illness and, for those who do survive, some have very nasty Long-Covid. No one wants to be stuck at home but it is not HMG's fault - indeed, it is more our faults for the wrecklessness of a few; then there are those who have to mix for vital employment, etc. Point is, to all of us hacked-off, just remember the real enemy is the virus and the more we can do to ameliorate this pandemic, the quicker we can all regain our lives. Anyway, good luck to you and yours; stay safe. Cheers.

Great to see you back posting videos. Have you had a Grand Opening yet? I think for your first paying customer(s) you should give out some free SWAG. Not too much free swag, but enough for people to mention your Cafe in conversation. Just my opinion I would try and avoid mooring near a water treatment facility, trust me on this, I work at one. It took me a long time to get back into coffee after I started working here. Your haircut looks great Jo. Nice 'Apocalypse Now' interlude.

You are both natural you don’t need to stop/start the video. I’ve been with you for forever, it wasn’t until you told us of your sabbatical that I actually realised that you both were part of my covid survival mechanism. . .Relax you are forgiven😂. A couple of points-1) get yourself an 8-10” log round(section of Tree) approx 12” high & chop your logs down on that, you will stop your hatchet blunting & the wood on wood gig will aid chopping. 2) on here(comments page) give out your W3W(what3words) location & offer to make 1 coffee for the folk who turn up, then you can continue as you become more & more open in the future. I’ve loved your journey & thankyou for the laughs.

Since lockdown, we have had a red coffee van coming around our Avenue And he plays the theme tune to the Sopranos to let us know he is here....think he used to tour nearby offices for business till lockdown, so we keep him going for now 😊ps....loving yours vlogs.

I just spent approx 2 weeks getting a good coffee out of a La Pavoni domestic coffee machine. So watching this vid really struck a chord. Level of grind, milk steaming, watching the milk (not) separate etc. Finally my coffee pass the Mrs C Coffee Snob test - now it's all good. Your machine looks so much more complex though. It's now 2 years on from this video and I guess Vic has it all under control now !!
