I like the last bit about reminding the players that its not a linear adventure. I think almost everyone's earliest experiences trying to run a sandbox game involves the players standing around saying "okay... now what?"

How would you do a sandbox campaign where planet hopping is a thing and the players can go anywhere in the Galaxy area they want? The main quests are tasks a shipping company gives them to ship stuff across a galaxy. The pc’s are suppose to complete 1 quest every earth month but besides for that have free range of the galaxy. How do I get players to do things other than the main quests?

Rumours would be important for this particular situation. Have NPC’s tell the party of cool things to see/find/fight in between missions. If you have 10 planets that are cool, offer something cool to do at 3-4 of them. And I’d make sure there’s never enough time between main quests to explore all the rumours they get, so the choices they make on where to explore is more meaningful. As well you could have main quests where the planet they need to go to is unclear. Maybe they need to track down a missing shipment and its last location was between one of 3 planets. That way where they start their search is totally up to them.
