Sad that now they've turned grade school gym classes into forty minutes of party games or worse: no gym class at all. Spent my middle school years in PE class alternating between duck duck goose and messy back years. When I got to high school I was so out of shape I couldn't even finish a mile run in PE

I ran 8 miles the other day after having not run in years. I could hardly lift my feet off the ground for three quarters of the run. I could hardly breath for three quarters of the run and I ended up running very slow but I just kept going. That's one of the things I really like about running. The fact that no matter how hard it is it's actually easy in a way because all you have to do is just keep going. Even though I could barely lift my feet off the ground and I could barely walk and had to lie down for an hour when I got home before I could do anything I felt like I could've ran another 8 miles at the end of the run before I stopped. Once I stopped I was completely out of the zone.

I watched this video yesterday and learned that 180 is the ideal stride rate. Today I went out to do my normal workout, a 5 mile loop. Being a musician, I have a metronome app on my phone. I set it to 90 beats per minute, and used that to maintain 180 strides per minute, by timing my stride so my right foot landed on each metronome beat. I had to shorten my stride from its normal length to to maintain that stride rate, but I ended up running a PR with what seemed like only slightly more exertion than normal. So thank you, Sandi and Sage.
@bradcampbell57665 жыл бұрын
Shorter strides put less stress on the knees. I also learned that way of running, and although it slows me down to a 10 minute mile I still get a good workout. What is PR?

Thats great hopefully you get a good mile time because that will take you a long ways in terms of the sport.
@bradcampbell57665 жыл бұрын
My advice is to not be concerned about scoring points for the team, or winning. In x-country the important challenge is your personal mind-body connection. Start off slow, and you will get faster naturally. The important thing for me is to do the workouts, and put in the miles that your team is doing daily. I ran x-country just to condition myself for wrestling, and because I liked it for stress management. We would run in beautiful areas, sometimes along a coastal road, or on a beach, and sometimes up and down hills in the woods. Before you know it you will be able to run 5 miles or more every day!

For me I never ever had that natural talent in any physical sport or traning, I am roughly 172cm or 5.7 ish with very small hands and wrists so neither sports or lifting was anything i was cut out for. This though, i just realized i am such a natural runner, doing sports growing up i was really awfull at technique so i focused on basics so i got light strong tenacious muscles. All of these things in the video came naturaly to me and it's like I can just keep running. After only 3 weeks of traning i ran 36 km in one go! :)

They practiced 7 days a week for years. Having talent isn't the most important thing. Its the guy who works the hardest who gets what he wants. U being 172cm long aint no fking excuse either. There are NHL forwards dats shorter than u, and Messi, possibly the best european footballer of all time, is 169 cm long. If u dont wanna work hard and grind dats fine, but dont come will bullshit excuses like dat.

When they no longer are taught (either by parents or teachers in schools); when you don't want to spend money on specialized coaching, when you're looking for an easier and quicker, even discrete way of improving on something you've taken on; I don't think it's all that bad, but I do believe that they need to be passed onto generations as general knowledge. If they are not taught, the newer generations could go on with their lives without even hearing about those awesome things.
@yugurtz6 жыл бұрын
it's not basic if people have done it the wrong/inefficient way their entire lives. Nothing wrong with learning proper technique.
@RobManser776 жыл бұрын
Obviously everyone can run, but it’s not obvious how to do it properly. I know from bitter experience that if you just start running regularly without coaching, even with high quality running shoes and a body used to sport, it’s easy to get injured. I messed my knees up and took years to recover, but recently saw a decent coach and am now running regularly without injury. Proper technique is absolutely essential in my opinion.

Good tips. It is true, though, that you tend to fall apart as you get more exhausted, and begin all the bad habits, such as slouching, and not focusing on arm swing and keeping your back up straight, and contributing to a bunch of wasted motion. I must look like a real goon, at that point. I really need to start doing warm up runs before my actual runs because the first 1.5 miles always seems the toughest, and I always find myself asking, "why do I do this to myself?" but not long after I think,, "oh yeah!" Which is a scary thought because I had stopped running, years back, and I know people who have stopped running before and you immediately forget how good it can feel!

So to run properly, I have to run how I imagine a jester runs...

Living in a beautiful place like that definitely contributes to health. Here in humid/rain/super hot Miami, the last thing you are inspired to do is go outside. Great tips.

I was thinking the same although, it's wet , cold and rainy in UK. so for completly opposite reasons. but I've seen ppl run in rain at 1230am so I believe it comes down to Motivation and determination. it's not easy but definitely worth it. best of luck.

Wish i had watched this a fortnight ago. Started running a couple of weeks ago and i managed a 13miles on Monday night and basically haven't been able to walk since, my left ankle is in agony. i am clearly landing heel first. Thanks very much for the tips!

Nobody who had just started running two weeks before should EVER run 13 miles. No wonder you messed yourself up. After 2 weeks 4 miles is about the most you should have attempt in a single run. Be sensible. That wasn't a form problem but a brain problem.

Bit harsh! If everything felt fine why would i think there was an issue. I just thought i would go out and run till i was tired i wasnt expecting it to destroy me! I am used to cycling till tired, swimming till tired, weight lifting till tired. How was i supposed to know running would be different?

Interesting. Did not know there were different styles of running. I'm not a big running fan but recently I have got back into running and some of the tips should improve my run and my comfort level during my runs.

I tried to "fix" my form and move to a mid fore foot strike and promptly developed achillies tendonopathy. That was 5 years and thousands of dollars of physio appointments ago. So if you're gonna change your natural gait, do it very very gradually. It can introduce stress to your body it's not use to.
