I've loved the Beatles since age 12, watching them on Ed Sullivan Show, February 1964. That next Monday morning every young boy in U.S. started growing out his flattop! Just a few weeks before all of us young folks were traumatized and saddened when our President was shot. The Beatles made us smile again. They quite literally changed the world. One reason they are unique - no two Beatles songs sound alike! Great video, Otis, thanks!

The Beatles music sounds fresh and brand new every time I listen to there songs. Beatles music never gets old and is always right on. What great talent and we are all lucky to be living in the years of when the Beatles were discovered and recorded songs that will last for generations to come.

Loved the moment when George is helping Ringo with Octopus’s Garden. It came across so sincere and even sweet. I agree with all of your obvservations. Including your take on the director. As a side note, I work in Hollywood in film, and each time he was on screen it just reminded me of all the meetings with smarmy half wits pushing their own agenda over the art of storytelling? He seemed desperate to create something great, when greatness was standing right before him. I really do enjoy your channel. I love laughing out loud at some of your comments, like we’re in conversation. You have a good template. A great delivery for your channel, Really genuine, and I appreciate that. Especially in these times. (Oh, and i do roll the tone (and volume) knobs on my guitars, but it did take me a good 20 years of playing to discover they were there! Hahaha…)

I kept screaming out to George, "attracts me like no other lover" when he couldn't finish the line. and John was saying attracts me like a Pomegranate. LOL. John was annoying after 6 hours of film but he showed what an amazing live performer he was on that rooftop and Paul just lit up playing along side him and they both just killed it. Fascinating that songs rehearsed wound up on Abbey Road. Paul riffing Get Back out of thin air and then playing the beginnings of Let it Be and Long and Winding. George says oh I wrote this song last night and it's "Something" or I Me Mine or Old Brown Shoe. Ringo was wonderful to watch and see him adjust his drumming to the dynamics of each song.

100% BULLSEYE. We purchased Disney-plus just for the documentary also!!🤣 So many thoughts mirror yours regarding the film. One thing that struck me- I grew up my entire life (I’m 56) thinking the band hated each other. But this film totally changed that perception. Maybe by design-but I was so damn happy to see the fun they had in the studio! And yes, watching these songs being born on the spot is just sooo surreal!!

Figuring out the Beatles is like a college course, worth a couple of years study. There's dozens of GOOD books about them, and lots of others. You get to wade through them and decide what's best for yourself. "Shout!" by Phillip Norman is one of the better ones. The Beatles was John's band, originally; and in the "Get Back" film you see him soon after Brian Epstein's death. Epstein "rode herd" on the boys and kept 'em in line, they COULD be "fabulously" productive. But drugs were around, and after Epstein died, the spinning top that was the world's best pop group spun out of control; Yoko and John's manic "acting out" were part of that. To understand Lennon best, I recommend "Being John Lennon: A Restless Life" by Ray Connolly, a British journalist who knew Lennon for his whole career. But, like Otis has said, when they played, the BS was cast aside, and they would just HAVE to grin. I think that Peter Jackson(the Kiwi producer of "Get back" who's famous for also producing the "Lord of the Rings" movies) saw that, too(as Otis has also said, pointing out problems with Michael Lindsey-Hogg's production) and he was smart enough to just spruce up the film a bit, and let the group speak for themselves - and the results are phenomenal, as most people agree. Like Otis, I'm from the generation that "beheld" the Beatles re-invent Rock and Roll, and saw them make Rock Musician into a career choice. I agree with Otis that anyone who pans the Beatles is a boneheaded nit, and you should question their ability to think. The "Get Back" film is a priceless artifact, like a magic spell, allowing us to actually SEE what the excitement was all about; you should check it out if you get the chance.

Otis I remember watching the original film in a theater when it premiered and being so so sad . Watching my heroes breaking up in a terrible way but being thrilled by the rooftop concert. I never watched it again until Get Back came out. It made me so happy seeing Peter Jackson’s wonderful film. I thank him so much for having the vision to take that footage and retelling the story as only a master filmmaker can do. My children love The Beatles too and hopefully they will turn my grandchildren onto their music when they are old enough to appreciate their music. And how important The Beatles were to modern music.

Otis obviously realizes this…one of the reasons “Get Back” is exceptional is that the viewer sees how the biggest entertainment phenomenon of the 20th century actually worked and created, in real time…highly rare to see this level of in-depth exposure. Incredible.

I'm such a cheap bastard I wasn't going to get Disney until you Otis spoke of your awe of the entire experience. Now I can't wait to drop the dough. Right after this podcast I'll be a Disney Plus subscriber. I was 10 with my older brother who was 15 and really in the know. We sat watching our old B/W tv and Ed Sullivan introduced the band that changed the world.. I remember it like it was yesterday... no pun intended. After that I got a guitar and have been trying to play ever since. Growing up The Beatles were the soundtrack to my life. A new Beatle song would hit the radio and rocketed to the top of the charts. Everybody knew the words and sang along everytime. The movies, Beatle Boots, the Beatle Cap. Beatle Cards and all those incredible songs. My stack of 45's bring back great memories with every spin. The haircuts changed fashion forever. They started it all. I gotta admit my cheapness is embarrassing, WTF was I thinking. Thank you Otis for knocking some sense into my head! To watch John and George talking, playing and enjoying themselves is such a gift Your opinion matters a great deal to me, I honestly can't say enough about how much I enjoy your incredibly generous contributions to the stories behind so much of the music of my life.... Seriously my friend, thank you from the bottom of my heart....

I feel like I should say “welcome home”. It is impossible for me not to appreciate the Beatles place in history, or their amazing songs. But, what is most interesting to me is the band dynamics. In my experience, all bands have similar struggles, creative moments, laughs, fights, songs that don’t work, songs that write themselves, etc.. I love that this band, the cornerstone of rock and roll, had them too.

Big thanks Otis for this masterpiece morning coffe, it was really, really great. I fully agree with you on all your statements about the Beatles and the documentary. People who doesn't understand how great The Beatles were, and what an excellent drummer Ringo was etc, haven't understod what music is, that's for sure. I'm really happy that you are talking about The Dark Side of The Moon in this interview, because in my opinion this record is on the same genius music level as the greatest records of The Beatles. The story of Kevin, when he was working on tour with the Stones, was really great, one of the best Stones stories that I have ever heard. You are puttning the hammer right on the nail in that story. I love the Get Back documentary. So far I've only seen part 1, but I'm going to see part 2 tonight. You are right, this is the all time greatest documentary.

When I was 15 my family left midtown Memphis and moved 30 miles into North Mississippi. I was not happy about it. But if I had not moved I wouldn't have met my new next door neighbor, Joel. Before we made the move I had just bought McCartney's "McCartney" album. Joel had just bought the "Get Back" album. Turns out Joel was a Beatles freak. He knew everything about them. Now, I was exposed to Beatlemania through my older cousins, Francis and Patricia. I thought I knew a lot and had heard everything Beatles until I met Joel. We were inseparable. We spent hours sitting in his room listening to Beatles music. Some days Joel put his stereo's speakers in his window so we could listen on the porch. We went to a Beatles' movie marathon where we sat all day watching "Hard Days Night", "Help", "Yellow Submarine" and "Get Back". I wish my friend would have lived long enough to see the "Get Back" documentary. He would have never stopped smiling.

You can count me as one who is blown away by this doc, incomparable versus anything I ever seen. As a musician myself, I’m also incredibly impressed with the guts to decide to try and do whatever is they were trying to do…in less than one month, write, rehearse, and play a show of 12-14 new songs while you’re basically in a fishbowl being filmed. This life-long Beatles fan will never again think of the Let It Be era as a grumpy, disappointing end to my life’s greatest inspiration.

Thanks Otis!! I loved that Documentary!! To me, the most important member of the Beatles was without a dought Mal Evens!! If they had a Hall of Fame for “gofer’s” he would be at the top of the heap!! He was the ROAD CREW!! He was there guitar finder..the two 61’ Daphne Strats that one became Rocky..I loved Mal in this Documentary always writing down things in his journal..listening to every word, waiting to his next task..through all the years he was there with them..probably serving as a body guard to some extent!! Thanks again Otis!! Wonderfully awesome!!

The discussion of Get Back starts at around 9:30. Skip ahead rather than quit if that's why you're watching. Loved your take, and I'm glad it took me to your channel. As the person who buys the music, not the person who makes it, my favorite bits were watching Paul give birth to Get Back, and seeing the band develop each other's songs. I've heard people comment that it was magic, but I go back to Einstein: genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. (Paraphrase, don't kill me.) Hard to know how the lads would have done without Hamburg. Michael Lindsay-Hogg drove me crazy too, but without him we wouldn't have any of this. And there he is in his suit, being hoisted/dragged up over the edge of the roof, and when he lifts his head, there's that cigar still in his mouth - he gets taken down a peg after all his hectoring for a concert in Libya with 2,000 Arabs, or sending everyone, including fans, on a ship for 3 days. Of course, music cruises today do that, and I'm on for the Rock Legends Cruise soon. Deep Purple, Pure Prairie League, Walter Trout, Styx, and the reason I decided to take my first cruise - a recommendation by The Immediate Family, a group of the session guys from The Wrecking Crew. Y'all will recognize my friend Leland Sklar, whose beard will give you a bit of competition, Otis. Back to the film. Yoko's caterwauling also killed me, but Heather's reaction was priceless. The face she made ... and then seeing her mimic Yoko a bit later, then look around slyly to see how that had gone down... I was listening with headphones, and I guffawed so loud my cat split. Also appreciate your take on people who say The Beatles suck. Don't care if you don't like them, but we are still devouring the details 50 years later, and there's no denying how they changed music history. I have the same gripe with people who say everything today is garbage. There was plenty in the 60s that was junk. Remember Yummy Yummy Yummy I've Got Love in My Tummy? I'm Henry VIII, I Am? Tiptoe through the Tulips? Dominique, by The Singing Nun? All top 10 hits in the '60s. Forgive me for reminding you. This changes so much of what I thought I knew. I loved every second of it, and I'm grateful to Peter Jackson for his technical work. There is a 4-hour interview with him on the Things We Said Today podcast. Fascinating. ✌️Peace and love! ✌️ (Glad you didn't cut out the train. I grew up in northern Illinois, and later lived 20 ft from the tracks in Virginia. I miss train whistles.)

I could probably go on all day about my experience growing up listening to The Beatles and my evolving appreciation for their music, but I won't. But yeah, that moment in the documentary when we get to see the song 'Get Back' coming into the world, was astounding. We are so lucky to have that on film. I also noticed the moment between Yoko and Linda and how genuine and free of any hint of tension it appears. I thought it was nice. And even though I thought sometimes Yoko was insinuating her way into conversations where she shouldn't have, I found it noteworthy just how tolerant of her the other 3 were, at least at that time. The documentary certainly isn't going to be for everyone. It's very long. I don't say you have to be a Beatles fan to enjoy it, but it helps. For me, it was more than just nostalgia and fandom, however. I found myself enraptured by the creative process, the interpersonal back-and-forth, and the magic.

I am definitely down the rabbit hole after seeing Get Back, and I will watch it repeatedly, as I did the Anthology series. So I can't get rid of Disney+! This film was a teenage dream come true, ever since I saw the original Let It Be film. The album has always been my favorite. Watching the rooftop concert again was almost orgasmic! I also wondered how it would have been if the wind was blowing the other way - their hair covering their faces 😊 I was most impressed with Paul's emotional intelligence amidst the problems. I was wondering if he had been to therapy or if he was just raised well! I'm glad that KZbin sent this video my way 😊

I saw the original theatrical release of Let It Be in 1970 or '71, in Pecos, Texas and remember being really troubled by what looked like a bunch of people looking unhappy and about to break up. I was a straight up Lennon fan from the moment I saw him play that impossible rhythm on All My Loving on the Ed Sullivan Show. Paul looked like the bad guy, bullying George, and trying to be the boss of the Beatles. When Get Back came out a couple of years ago, it completely changed my perspective on all of that, and found the experience uplifting and enlightening, Peter Jackson did a great thing there, presenting a fuller, probably more accurate account of those early weeks on 1969. I loved seeing Maureen Starkey on the day of the rooftop concert; she looked like the coolest, sexiest Beatle fan ever. Thank you, Otis, for your heartfelt commentary.

This pulls in perfectly Otis. 3 years ago i did a National Trust tour of John's childhood home and then onto Paul's afterwards. They lived maybe 10 minutes walk from each other. I took my guitar into Paul's house. I asked the tour guide lady if I could play my guitar in Paul's childhood bedroom. So, I played Let It Be, sat on his bed. It was the same guitar you signed for me in Nottingham 2 weeks ago. I shit you not!

One of my favorite scenes (I think they actually showed it in 2 different episodes??) was when George was struggling with finding the right words for "attracts me like...." and John said to just start with something like "a cauliflower" and just keep going from there. The second time he also said "a pomegranate." But I didn't see how/when he actually came up with "no other lover." Oh, and when you talked about people who say "The Beatles suck," I immediately thought of my friend Heath, and linked this video to him and told him to watch that part. He says you are a friend of his and Patty's. I worked with him at the bike shop several years ago. Love the Lew Wallace location! Thanks, Otis and welcome home!

Beautiful! Thank you, Otis. Never too much Beatle talk, at least not from the real listeners, the ones who can appreciate how great they really were. I was a kid living in Atlanta, Georgia, when a friend came back from a year in England carrying a 45 rpm record, saying kids were going crazy over there about this band, The Beatles. The 45 had Love Me Do on one side. That’s all we needed to start going nuts. It wasn’t long after, The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan and the whole country was going nuts. Hard to believe the transformation of the Beatles and the transformation our national psyche over that short time period between The Beatles’ Ed Sullivan Show appearance and their appearance on the rooftop of Apple Studios. Otis, keep running down that Beatle rabbit-hole, please. Right behind you, brother!

Good morning Otis, before I forget it because I'll probably go down the rabbit hole here, I encourage you to go down the rabbit hole with an episode on the Beatles & "Get Back" documentary. You want to know what I thought about the "Get Back" documentary...It is as good as it gets. Perfect in every way...Astounding...Beautiful...and I want to say for me personally it had a very "HEALING" effect. I'll be 67 years old the end of next June. There is really just no way to explain how "big & influencential" the Beatles were in real time to those who did not experience it. That being said I'll try really hard not to go off the deep end here talking about every little detail. Those that loved the Beatles down to their bones never really got over their splitting up. Not really...It was sort of like losing one of your best friends. And the break up was painted so ugly by all the medias. In real time every time you heard them reporting John was hating on Paul or Paul was hating on John, or it was all Yoko's fault they broke up...etc...etc...etc. It was like an arrow going through your heart. I always knew most of those reports were absolute bull shit deep down. But now all these years later to have that all confirmed has been wonderful!!!! Those four lads loved one another to death and it was so obvious in this documentary...As strange as this will sound having watched it a couple times now...It left me happy as hell & feeling like the Beatles never "really" broke up...."and it healed me" The scene where Paul states how ludicrous it would be when fifty years later someone would be saying the Beatles broke up because Yoko set on amp blew me away. I still know a lot of folks that hate on Yoko because she "broke the Beatles up" Like John said "Woman is the nigger of the world" way back in I believe 1970. Bottom line I absolutely loved it and it healed a spot in my heart & I know the Beatles "NEVER REALLY BROKE UP"...PLH-ELB

Hey Otis, what a great segment. Thank you bro. I was with you all the way. I’m nearly 70 yro and when I heard that Peter Jackson was doing this, at least 3 years ago, I actually thought, I hope I’m alive to see this historical event 😂 and I am and forever grateful. I have recently discovered your KZbin world via your album Hoosier National. I love it, but I have to stop playing it. Gotta keep it fresh 😂 The first time through it filled my heart. Wow. Nine Foot Problem floored me, as well as the complete set of songs. Thanks 🙏🏼

Let it Be was the first LP I bought, the week it came out, at 13. Watching GET BACK pulled at my heart in so many ways, on so many levels. Great piece, Otis. Seeing them play on the roof was EPIC. What a band! The personas, the humor, the dynamics. Poor Ringo looks so damn hung over -- he's a great drummer, a great soul, a cool dude.

Peter Jackson said he originally thought about cutting back and forth between the footage and interviews with Paul and Rhys Jones and Yoko but felt the story had to be told by the Beatles themselves, in that time. So thankful he simply created a situation where we were all there, in the room, watching Paul work out the chords to Get Back, or screaming "like no other lover" at George when he was trying to work out the lyrics to "Something" and watching Rhys solve the problem of how to structure the lyrics to Don't Let Me Down. Otis, I think you nailed it when you said it's the best thing of it's kind in the history of music documentaries. We all spent three weeks, across 6 hours, together in two rooms with the Beatles watching magic happen.

Glad to see that you are home Otis. Seems like it all went great. Man, I live out in the middle of the country and noise these days seems to be constant. The loudest cars must go through 10 to 20 times a day. Never was a huge Beatles fan but always appreciated them and their music. Always thought they were probably some of the most gifted rock musicians in that era. Had a roommate that ONLY listened to the Beatles. I'm not a musician but I love good music and always wanted to play guitar. There a few their songs that will stop me in my tracks. Great having coffee with you, but you are making me get Disney+ now. 😀 Have a great weekend and look forward to future videos.

Hi Otis. Welcome back. Great video. I think ill have to get Disney plus to watch this now. I've also heard from yourself and others that there's a lot of myths being dispelled for the better regarding how they got along etc. I've always taken what the media says with a pinch of salt and am so glad people can hear see for themselves that it's not as the press made it out to be the way that they covered it and more rightly how much it makes the press look like the negative so and so's that they really are. I'm sitting here now singing'' Power to the people''✌🎶

You took the words right out of my mouth. Anytime someone says the Beatles are over rated or suck I know I can totally disregard that person. I loved the documentary. I loved the realness and the creation and the work of the band. It makes me long to be in the studio working with me mates making music come alive. I was also amazed at the names of people who were involved like Alan parsons and mike love. Re: Hogue was the bad guy for sure. Nail on the head Otis. Nail on the head. I loved watching them work through there shit together and make brilliance. And again RINGO!!! Every band needs one at least. You are so right on with the band dynamics. And all the real tricks that used be the normal in playing, recording, playing, being a band and such. Thanks again for Saturday morning!! Welcome back. Look forward to hearing about it.

I just watched this video sat less than two blocks from where you recorded it. Your sarcasm about the noise here is spot on. I moved here to escape the hustle and cacophony of a big city, being told this place was "a quiet, sleepy small town". It is small. Quiet and sleepy, not at all. It's louder than Chicago and reminds me of New York in volume. I use the tone knobs all the time on guitars. I did not know the younger musicians are avoiding them. Nice one, man. I'm glad I found your channel tonight.

I've always known this, but it just struck me while watching Get Back, the level of musicianship they were truly coming from. Everyone of them was able to play the piano, bass, guitar, drums and sing. Even Ringo was playing piano, singing and contributing more then just a drummer. I couldn't agree more about Michael Lindsay-Hogg. He was an ass. The Best thing they did, was having Billy Preston sit in with them. He was an awesome addition. I enjoyed watching John clowning around, and then the next minute he's playing and singing like a seasoned pro. It's almost as if he used clowning as a better way of dealing with Paul, rather then getting into shit-fights with him. John sure loved his 50's rock'n-roll, and would play it at the drop of a hat. Great stuff! Kind of poignant how at one point it was just Paul and Ringo, and Paul said, "and then there were two". Wow who knew that 52 years later it would be just two, and it would be Paul and Ringo. Very Good One Otis ! Cheers to ya

I used to think he was a bad director, but he coordinated all the shooting that ended up being Get Back, so I give him credit. The Beatles put up with him and never let him tell them what to do. They vetoed almost everything he suggested.

I also disagree about Lindsey-Hogg.. He was trying to do his job and steer it towards something worth shooting. They were all over the place, had no plan and he was ultimately responsible for the end product, which was changing from hour to hour. The guy was directing 10 cameras with a confidence I would have killed for at 28. So I have to give him super props for at least working as hard as the Beatles were trying to hide from him which, let's face it, yielded the glorious footage/audio that is the reason we're discussing this at all.. I can understand how he's being perceived as "The Villian" which, I think mostly satisfies our "every-movie-we've-ever-watched-is-some-sort-of-triumph-over-evil-journey-so-we-need-a-bad-guy" thing.. but walk a mile in a man's shoes before you judge him.. That way, you're a mile away from him.. and you have his shoes.

Lindsay-Hogg was a typical luvvie of the time. The original film was edited to the Beatles approval. If it was deceptive it’s because that was what they allowed. I think the amount of covert filming and sound recording he did was genius and brave considering the clientele he was working for. I wouldn’t want to have a drink with the guy but a less pompous ass wouldn’t have had the neck like a jockey’s arse to do what he did.

I’ve never seen magic caught in a bottle and we’ve been lucky enough that it was The Beatles. I have never read a book about act of song creation from a vantage like this. We actually got see them at work and I didn’t think I would ever see creation in the moment. I had watched an Alan Parsons interview about this time in his life and it was akin to pulling teeth. I can’t explain why he was so resistive to telling stories. Watching Billy Preston come into the room and lift the whole of it was magical. It was one of my favorite moments. I’m watching the third part tonight. I put it off so I could savor it without interruption. Yea…John is a killer guitar player and way under-sung. I absolutely loved it. Please do…all we need is love!

I get what Parsons was alluding to. Hours and days would go by with seemingly nothing getting accomplished and for a musician like George Harrison, it was something of a pressure cooker.

I agree with your comments on Ringo. And, after watching the doc I had to admit I was wrong about him for a lot of years. He was a very good drummer and a perfect fit for the songs and the band. I thought your comments on the Beatles as band mates, and how we've all dealt with those different personalities were dead on. John was a total squirrel, but with the talent to back it up. Paul seemed to understand how to deal with the problems in a group but probably would have appreciated not having to be the one communicating it. I think he saw the band's strength as being individuals with equal standing and for him to tell them to "shut up and play what and when I tell you" would never work. His indirect methods seemed to work better than direct to the point bluntness. I could probably learn that lesson to some degree or another. Thank you for your videos, Sir.

Feb, 9, 1964, I was 11 yrs old, glued to our black and white tv watching the Ed Sullivan show introduce the Beatles to the US. They were a huge hit, many parents disliked them because of their long hair and the youth loved them. They brought a change in music as well as a change in culture. All the young people wanted the Beatle haircut and rock and roll was elevated to the next level. They took the US by storm and it was awesome. Great time to grow up! Loved the interviews this past week and cant wait to see Get Back.

I appreciate how you talk about the Beatles. As an 8-year-old in 1968, they were my favorite band. I even tried to like "Revolution #9." Some of that remains, but I can't put a record on. I'll pick it up and hold it, but before I get it on the turntable something tells me there's so much other music I need to hear, and I put it away again. On my way to pulling out LET IT BE for "For You, Blue," I grabbed a David Bromberg album I hadn't heard in about 30 years. It wasn't worn out in the same way LET IT BE is (I mean in my head, not the LP). I just made a major move last July. I'm still unpacking records and reevaluating them (I had 58 cartons [13 × 13 × 13"], however many records that makes). It's pleasant and overwhelming at the same time. I plan to sell a lot of the jazz records; they just don't hit me the way they used to, but there are several hundred I'd never part with. MINGUS, MINGUS, MINGUS, MINGUS, MINGUS is the best example of the ones I want to keep. It ruined everything else for me when I heard it in 1989. Thanks for the talks. I've listened to dozens of your interviews and monologs, starting with the compendium on John Prine, great stuff! My main interest for roughly the last 12 years has been the blues. I wish there was a show that went as deep as you do, as frequently as you do (Mark Hummel's interviews come close, there just aren't as many of the principals left, but he's also a thoughtful interviewer).
