But in all of this, the KEY take away coming from an Orthopedic Surgical Nurse's perspective, total joint replacements are 99% from patients having a history of a sedentary lifestyle and/or obesity, NOT FROM RUNNING!! 🏃♀️ So get out there and at least get off the couch and move!!! ❤
@Ohtaror5 ай бұрын
Or do they have a sedentary lifestyle because of bad hips?
@ORnurse02054 ай бұрын
@@sarh23 In the US, osteoarthritis is increased by obesity for sure. I more or less, am referring to an older population. And there are other factors such as, previous injury to the joint (i.e. sports, trauma), age and even genetics. I don't judge, only statistically speaking that in those patients we have taken care of who needed total knee replacements, had not been active for years and did not have a history of high impact sports. Most cases, the patients BMI is too high when first seen in the clinic by the Doctor. The BMI has to be below 39, and some require less than that, in order for surgeons to even consider doing surgery because there are too many risks post-operatively and not having successful outcomes in Physical Therapy. Yes, I myself am an athlete and would have needed a total knee replacement in my early 40's if I did not have a lateral retinacular release arthroscopy done on my knee in my early 30's, I would have needed a total knee replacement or partial replacement in my early 40's, but....I had to stay proactive and stay on top of instabilities in and around my knee with extensive PT. Part of that was not working on my TFL, glute medius, hips and my genetics. But I worked hard and now 15 years after surgery, my knee has zero issues. It is all a case by case basis. Total joint replacements for hips and knees have many different factors in younger vs older adults. But with that said, obesity will accelerate the processs, especially osteoarthritis. There are numerous articles that one can find statistically speaking, on younger adult causitive factors vs older adults (geriactric) in regards to any total joint replacement. Again, no judging because we all come from different backgrounds, have different cultures, have different pain tolerances, but we also can be accountable for oursleves and be our own advocate, being proactive and staying informed.

@@ORnurse0205 I did competitive basketball from the age of 6 till 18 and then I stopped completely not doing anything for 17 years now (age 35). I'd like to start running, however I'm afraid to get an injury because of being inactive for so long. The only exercise I do is walking/cycling short distances and then once a year go snowboarding. My BMI is 24. Any advice? Please and Thank you.
@SupersonicWaveLengthАй бұрын
@@gambino883 My own two cents: just try things. You're 35, not 55. Your body's recovery is still amazing. And most of all, the atrophy over 17 years, plus your low BMI, means you're probably too weak to injure yourself. So just go for a run, make sure you lift weights, and I'd also recommend playing a bit of basketball. You could even just do full court layups in lieu of running - just do them until you feel like you can't breathe any more, then take a 10 minute rest, then rinse and repeat.

I’m generally on board with saying sock shoe sock shoe is a silly way to use it on shoes but I did it the other day and realized there is a context where it’s less odd. I was changing from sandals to shoes in my car so I was keeping my foot on the ground for stability and doing one foot at a time. Which reminds me, if I’m changing in a bathroom, i want as little contact between my foot and the floor so I do sock shoe sock shoe for good reason. I’m disturbed that you all have invaded my thoughts so thoroughly. All the best

One additional point for the knee science bit - there was a recent study (cited by Frederik Zillen on his KZbin channel a couple of months ago) that found heavier runners put less force through their knees than lighter runners because their mechanics are different and they generally aren’t running as fast. So lowering BMI is not likely to decrease the stress on your knees as Rick suggested - in fact it’s the opposite. You are more likely to go harder as you get lighter, and put more force through your knee joints.
@SupersonicWaveLengthАй бұрын
That's adding a lurking variable. Faster runners put more strain on the knees than slower runners - there's no question about that. But given the same speed, the heavier runner definitely puts more strain than the lighter runner. Their mechanics can't be any different, as the optimal force vector is going vertically from your femur to your tib/fib. If they are different, that's even worse as it is creating shear forces. In essence, losing weight is extremely helpful for reducing knee pain. You should increase speed later, when you're more comfortable with increased workload.

I discovered yesterday that Strava WILL PAUSE your run for you if you stop moving! (Only if you didnt pause it yourself with your watch) So actually when you dont pause your run... you still pause your run. Ironically the only way to not pause your run is to pause it a tiny amount which disables the starva's feature to calculate moving times. Or set your run to Race, then theres only elapse time. Im not gonna lie, this discovery caused a lot of chatter on our running group chat!

Knee pains can also indicate that your running shoes are worn and no longer provide the cushioning. And yes, regarding shoes, TRC, please consider an episode on waterproof running shoes (not trail shoes). The stains are almost impossible to remove on lighter shoes (not all can afford multiple sets of running shoes). PS: Sydney has had a lot of rain of late, that some parkrun events were even cancelled! Or maybe, have an episode on how to clean running shoes.

I'm in southeast New Brunswick. There are bears, but you're unlikely to encounter one. People in my area often post (in a local FB group) the damage they cause to their garbage bins in the Spring, but that's about it. I've never worried about or even seen one on a run. On the topic of knees, I hurt my left knee as a kid and it was unstable for well over a decade. It would occasionally go out on me if I pivoted wrong, leaving me sore for days or weeks. Since I started running regularly 8 years ago it's given me no issues. 👍
