For Sarah's (and the viewers) reference - Vero managed two records - he ran the 100m while on fire in 17 seconds, and also ran the furthest while on fire at 272m (time not disclosed)

Thank you for answering my question! I'm weixian from Singapore, sorry for my difficult-to-pronounce name😂. Would love a video on marathon training for those of us targeting 5h+ or even 6h! Even better, maybe pick someone who has never run a marathon before, and whose first marathon woukd be 5h+, and do a series journeying through the process with them! It would definitely be very relatable for many of us "regular" runners watching this channel!❤

I would fit in the slower category of runners. I train with the Jeffing plan. Also, when training for a marathon I tend to do a 20 second run and 30 second walk. Unlike other plans Jeff Galloway wants you to train anywhere between 26 and 29 miles on your long run. Last year did a 7 and 1/2 hour long run for 29 miles. Again, this was done with a lot of walking. With generous walk breaks recovery is not really that bad.

Great podcast, would you guys be able to do a video about 5+ hour marathons and the training involved please? I think this would interest a lot of slow runners like myself 🙂

19:47 It looks like these were two separate records, set on the same day! Both were run by Jonathan Vero, while in "full body burn" - running whilst fully on fire and without oxygen. The first was a 100m sprint which was done in 17 seconds, beating the previous time of 24.58 seconds. The second record was a distance run (still without oxygen), where he completed 272.25 metres, beating the prior 204.23m record.

On the same day (24 September 2023), another marathon that starts with a B, namely the Buenos Aires marathon is taking place. It would be great to have a show or commentary on training differences for various types of marathons, focusiing on altitude, surfaces being run on, water points, temperature chnages during the race, audience support (London Marathon 2022 was so noisy (horns) that it can be headache inducing). Thanks to the TRC team for these podcasts; fun to listen to, and great advice. Commenting from another B city - Brisbane, Australia

I've even seriously thought about having a T-shirt printed, something like "Zone 2 Run Today" in case other people around think I'm just an old man running slowly... I have so far resisted this impulse...😊. Possibly it it may be partly connected to the 'Spotlight Effect' ?

8:10 - happened to me today 🤣i was doing 400m repeats and on one of my recovery jogs a lady past me. 30 sec later i was in my 400m run, i was running 4:30k pace, i caught her, she tried to not allow me to pass her, went into a full blown sprint and blew up 30 sec later 🤣

Funnily enough I don't do the bus stop runner thing, usually too tired to care, but I'm fascinated by other people's running style. We should all run more or less the same way but we don't and some people look so inefficient but fly along.

First off: glad I am not the only one suddenly going into prime running form passing by bus stations. Also this reminds me of my first half-marathon finish. In my head I went for a mega sprint across the finish line. When I saw the video later an old lady with a walk cane could have probably still overtaken me. So yeah, thought vs. reality…😂

About running in the trails downhill, you need a lot of practice and strength in your legs. Eventually you get to a point were you fly downhill with little effort. You have to land with a “soft knee”, a slight bend on the knee, and very high cadence, but there’s more to it. I know, been running on trails for years and only recently got to this point and it’s so fun 😃
@moosemafia Жыл бұрын
Higher cadence definitely helps. I've also found that turning the run into more of a gallop helps go downhill at speed.

Loved this episode, there’s so much in it which all runners will get. For some reason running on the Wirral, kids used to try and outrun us as we were training or sing “Keep on running” at us. I always wanted to look as comfortable as possible. I thought the fire thing was gonna be hill sprints and leg muscles (I was so far away…) Also the choice on bathroom or not lol, although portaloos are a nightmare, especially during a marathon or sth… Cheers again guys, keep them coming!

I really get the need to spit, especially on hard efforts in the cold. But since the pandemic, I've found it totally unacceptable at Parkruns or crowded races. I guess on the plus side, I do force myself to overtake spitters so that I'm safe, so I get faster times! X

My base running has been using MAF for over about 16 Months , so I lhave no problm letting other people past me , and in fact if they are close to the pace I am running I will divert to avoid any ego issues. If I can't avoid it at all , I just stop pause my watch and give them time to move on.

I did my first Marathon at 5h+ but I was able to do my 20 miles run 3 weeks before around 4h. It was tough but it gave me the confidence to tackle the marathon. I am a slow runner but pretty good in recovery. Maybe add walks into a very long run as this is most likely necessary for slow runners in a marathon race.
@woutpeters45 Жыл бұрын
2 extra options to prepare yourself for a marathon but the traditional long run of 18 miles or longer is too long because recovery takes too long: - cross train with for instance cycling, this way you will still train your arobic capacity but will not have the impact of beïng on your feet for a long time - you cut your long run short and add an extra recovery run the day after the long run where you run the miles you were supposed to run in the long run, that way your total mileage will be the same but split in 2 runs

Love the dynamic of the podcast. I'm new to running (well new to the bug of loving running) and I'm curious if you have any videos/advice on the 'drop' of shoes. I used to run in the Pegasus 39s (which were great) then succumbed to the buzz of online reviews for the Puma Deviate Nitro 2s about a month ago. Since then I've experienced horrible calf/lower leg pains. Reverted back to the Pegasus for a runthrough event today and the pain was not a thing. I've booked a gait analysis (which I probably should have done at the beginning) but am curious as to why given the Deviate Nitro 2s are meant to be nicely cushioned, good for support etc. (Know this is a very specific user case so apologies) Keep up the amazing work! Looking forward to Sarah serenading us in a future vid!

11:35 You aren’t on their radar unless you’re running barefoot. In such case, you keep hearing over and over other people talking to each other on why the hell are you running without shoes, or informing you that you are in fact not wearing shoes, or warning you against its dangers, or they just nervously burst into loud laughter. And all that right after quick glimpse of you while you run past them at a rather fast pace. Apparently, their "radar" can instantly turn on whenever there’s anything remotely unusual happening nearby.

The lady feeling knackered post long run. It could be the type of food being consumed pre during and post run and time between eating and running. If your body hasn’t converted enough into energy or is the wrong proportions of carbs/dairy/protein the body is going to be working doubly hard to convert into energy and give you enough energy while running. Then not getting the electrolytes in during and protein post run

it's normal for your body to protect your calories. if you do more cardio than normal your NEAT will go down. it's basically your metabolism slowing down to conserve energy. though yeah, if it's an extreme response then it could be a mineral deficiency or something. for slow runners, I'd say get a heart rate monitor and train by time+heart rate rather than pace+distance you definitely do need to make sure you are hitting some distance milestones in your long runs but running by heart rate or power will make sure the effort is relative to your ability level.

That was interesting. I started runnin--- jogging in 2017 aged 65: I think you could do an hour or more on my issues with bodily fluids and looking dreadful in big-event action photographs. However, I reckon most of your viewers would "gross out" and switch off about a minute in. That said, the more weight I lost the easier my conditions became to cope with. My hiatus hernia, which had blighted my sporting life since my mid-teens, disappeared altogether and, believe it or not, I actually look sexy in finish line snaps taken at last year's New Forest 10k. Oh, Rick! I'm in Southampton.

Long runs should be at easy pace, if I would run for max 3 hours I wouldn't run further than 30k, at my easy pace. But I think that would be enough otherwise recovery time is too long.

Sarah would so worry me as a guy trying to overtake a woman while staying as far away as possible if she sped up just as I approached. I'd be lost whether to speed up to overtake fast but that'll look like I'm chasing them or stay at a steady pace but then they might do it again. I'd probably just divert somewhere random to avoid the social anxiety.

Spitting. Your body is producing saliva and mucus all the time. JVT demonstrated the amount in his Christmas lectures a few years ago. So when you run the swallowing that normally happens is supressed. I don't nose breath during running because of a deviated septum. Possibly since my nose was broken. Which I straightened myself, as you do... When I run I generally know which way is North etc Sarah. Unless it's cloudy and I am running in an unfamiliar place.
