This series has been brilliant, bro. Really enjoyable to follow even though that's basically all I can do, I'm not sure I could pass muster when it came to the technical abilities required! 😁 Thanks for taking the time to share this adventure with us.

Thank you for making this video and compiling these resources. I am building a kit of an Apple I to get into the hardware side of retro computing, so this will be a great help! Regrettably, the company doesn't offer an ACI kit;. I guess I'll need to hunt down parts and/or read a bit closer into Uncle Bernie's revision.
@RetroHackShack2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I highly recommend Uncle Bernie's kit if they are still available. I didn't have any issues finding a blank ACI on eBay.

Thanks for the video. I was really curious about how the apple 1 could be used back in the days, you answered most of my guess, using Basic for sure is a better way.

Hey Aaron, I love what you're doing and long may you continue. Just a quick note about Codebreaker; you mangled your replies to the Apple 1. If you think about it, there are three sates... 1) incorrect 2) correct guess at the wrong position 3) correct guess at the correct position This is reported back with... - for 1 + for 2 * for 3 e.g: if your code (the one that needs to be guessed by Apple) is AAAA and Apple guessed FDEA your response should have been ---+ because A is a correct letter, but at the wrong position. Your response was *--- which means you told Apple that F was a correct guess at the correct position. Back in the day, I coded my ZX81 with this exact game: happy days! Be safe.

Thanks. Also, the version I was using had some bugs.

Thanks for yet another great video about the Apple 1. The more I see and read about the Apple 1 the more I want to build one. I have been using the Green Delicious Apple 1 emulator on my Commodore 64 emulator VICE and it works great. But having the real hardware would top it all! I hope to see more Apple 1 video’s on #retrohackshack in the future and cross my fingers hoping a set of the Apple 1 manuals are heading my way :-)

Awesome video Aaron, my wood shop is ready and as of today my electronics lab will be ready. The first computer I worked on was an Altair 8800 at Texas Instruments (Mid 70's). My first home computer was a Sinclair ZX81 kit, add was on the back of Popular Electronics (around 1980 or so). I've been retired for a few years and am finally ready to do it over again... After watching a bunch of videos on the Apple 1 replica, this video convinced me that this was the project for me :-) What a way to start with a set of replica manuals from Armond. #retrohackshack

Wow. That's so awesome! I wish I could find an Altair 8800 these days.

@Retro Hack Shack I also followed your series on the Northstar Horizon and really liked that too. I have one that I got about 20 years ago and have never done anything with. I think I would love to fire it up someday and your videos give me hope. Lol.

When you first said "period correct," I said to myself, "one of those Panasonics with the silver handle that pulls out from the front." I could totally visualize it, even after all these years. #retrohackshack

Excellent series! I also have a Sanyo VM-4509 I use with my Apple II and love it. For tape, I use a Panasonic RQ-413S, which is period and VERY similar to your 309DS - and I find it very reliable and unfussy (and has a counter, and record pausing :) ). #retrohackshack

Hi, thanks for your amazing apple 1 videos, it helped me a lot. I have a problem similar to yours when you loaded basic from ACI and it didn't run at 26:26, I was wondering which ACI you built for this video is it standard ACI from apple pcb or an enhanced uncle bernie one? Also if there are any tips on how to load successful basic from tape please share. Thanks
@RetroHackShack Жыл бұрын
I used uncle Bernie's enhanced. Also, the model of cassette player matters, too. Not all of them will work.

This was a really great series. I've been waiting for this tape loading episode for a long while, and it was worth the wait. Could you load the programs onto the Apple and then save the code directly from the Apple to cassette? That would be easier than recording from phone to cassette and eliminate the phone as a point of failure. In any case the finished product looks really great, it's just a pity that all the hard work you did on the main board can't be seen inside the case. Now, if you could just get Woz to sign it ;)
@RetroHackShack2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can and I have done that with basic successfully, although I didn't show it I the video.

There's a Wikipedia page Lunar Lander (video game genre), which among other things contains and cites some instructions for the text-based BASIC game.

Uncle Bernie has Gen2 of the ACI card. I got one on ebay from Newton-computer. It’s much easier as Bernie explains!
@jazbell72 жыл бұрын
I would think that in this day and age, one would use a modern computer to play and/or store the Apple I audio tracks. Existing tapes (if any) could be played on a high quality cassette deck into the computer for storage. Audacity is free or Magix Sound Forge is only $60 and is better.
@greatquux2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m sure you can but probably his amp is farther away so the phone is just like a portable way to play back the audio files

Not only that, but there is no concern about motor speed, loose belts, or dirty heads when you use a digital source like a phone.

6:32: "Very period" is doge language. You meant period-correct, as in accurate to or befitting the period.
