Very helpful, we many teachers skip the MSV, and it gives good information.

Why is "And at" not correct when we are talking about syntax? You can start a sentence with "And at".

This is a great analysis. I appreciate the point about Syntax being difficult to analyze when the error is at the beginning of the sentence.

Was the SC on "piglet" checkmark placed in the wrong column? Should meaning have been checked under the SC column?

Written language is the ultimate abstraction of sound and meaning with the representation of phonemes by the letters of the alphabet. From a reproduction standpoint, you need these phonemic representations to build words. Phonemic representations of sounds is the breakthrough human technology to communicate visually auditory language! How would you minimize that relationship and tell a child to look elsewhere for an explanation for what these symbols on a page are hoping to communicate!

Some great information, but her credibility drops when she uses "site" rather than "sight" words on the last slide.

I would recommend perhaps looking at some syntax activities with this student. For example I would create sentence jumbles and get him to put the sentence into the correct order so he can understand that "and" is a pronoun and its position in the sentence. Furthermore I would get the student to then look at texts and underline the pronouns and the noun/s that they are reffering to. I do however think that using a book with "and" at the beginning of a sentence can be highly confusing for some readers as they have been taught that this is incorrect.

I appreciate you taking the time to put this together, but I find it problematic as an instructional. For example, in your assessment of the child you only asked him two of the 'beyond the text' comprehension questions listed and one was pretty vague (Does this remind you of anything?). I can't see how can you assess his comprehension accurately based on that. If more questions were asked, I think he would have had more of an opportunity to display his comprehension. I'm not trying to cut you down, just some constructive criticism :)

How is it that the little boy can read "farm" and 'kitten" yet can't work out 'and'? Could it be that there is no picture of "and"??? I wonder if he could read 'kitten' if he saw it in isolation?? And why does he need a "word wall" to memorise "and"? Why not just teach him how to sound out 'a-n-d' to read 'and'? So much easier on his brain.. And why is 'sight' as in 'sight words', spelt 'site'???
@psychohist7 жыл бұрын
Possibly he recognizes the lowercase 'a' but not the uppercase 'A'. Or, maybe he knows that sentences shouldn't start with conjunctions like "and" and "or".
@berysdixon89047 жыл бұрын
He did know A as 'a'.. The presenter said so. ..He just hadn't been taught to sound out. unfamiliar words.

And so what if he-a six year old- thinks that sentences shouldn't start with conjunctions? This one did. It is not for the reader to question whether a certain word is in the right place.. The reader's role is to READ (decode/sound out if necessary ) the words and THEN choose to ponder on the ins and outs of whether sentences can successfully begin with conjunctions if that's what gets their goat...very precocious 6 year old if that's the case..still couldn't read 'and' though..

Uppercase A and lowercase a are two different glyphs. The child may only have learned the lowercase letters well; this was true of some of my children at some points in kindergarten.

Because the child read the word at instead of and. They didn't say "and at".
