The best part of the interview is when he pauses talking about Rexs tone and realizes its def just him that makes it sound so badass. His right hand. - Neal

Been going to arena shows for 45 yrs. Been complaining about the sound for the last 20 plus yrs! Saw Pantera in NYC this week and my faith in sound, volume, and making a band sound great have been restored. Led me here to Eddie Mapp. Great job!

Living super close to Dallas all my life, I was lucky enough to get to enjoy the Pantera ride back in the day while it lasted. Starting with "Cowboys From Hell". As well getting to party with them on a couple of different occasions through the years. It was such an awesome time in Metal, because all the critiques at the time wouldn't shut up saying "Metal was dead" and Pantera just carried that flag beyond what any of us could expect and duct tapped the mouths of the critiques in the process. All because they loved what they did. A wise man once said that was all you needed.

Such cool insight. I've never seen anyone else do a rundown with the front of house guy on a big touring show. Or any size or type of show for that matter. This was a brilliant idea. Would be cool to male a series out of this. Start hitting all the shows and interview all the front of house guys. It would provide a wealth of knowledge and comparison that isn't available anywhere else on earth.

I am 48 years old. I was not only lucky enough to see the original Pantera lineup many times live but Got to meet them not once but twice! I have photos and guitar picks that say 'Diamond' Darrell because he was Diamond before Dimebag! Great times and great guys...except for Phil. This is the time he was on smack or whatever he was on and wasn't very social with the fans. Met them on the Vulgar tour and Far Beyond! Oh and this is a TRIBUTE! ;] I saw them at Ink in Ohio and they were tight! Rock on Phuckers!

I agree with you about Phil. I'll be 45 this year. Never saw the OG Pantera but I did catch DOWN in Denver once. We waited outside after the show and as he passed us we tried to interact with him. He stopped for a step or two and mean-mugged the crap out of us. Just for showing our appreciation and fandom. Never went to one of his shows after that.

I saw Pantera for the first time live this summer in Toronto, (opening clip in video) I walked in late and could here the show a mile out the stadium. Legit the best sound I’ve ever heard at that venue, insanely powerful and actually loud! Clear as hell, this guy is a legend

One, Pantera rules. I have been blessed to see them 3 times and NOTHING will ever top it. 2, Able is a beast. Any questions, watch him fill in for another bad mofo, Ray Luzier and Korn flawlessly. The two primary reasons I'm learning audio engineering is I'm almost obsessed with crushing the fans live and I want total control as much I can have as a playing musician over the sound while I'm playing. Thank you this amazing video Nick and Eddie, I barely joined my local IATSE the 31st and am just starting to learn to mix live and will soon find a school to get a certification from - any suggestions for certifications and or school for AE? Thanks again!

I like what he said about most of the live mix being mono- live sound is a very different animal than mixing recordings. I love a wide stereo field when I'm at home listening, but in a venue it sucks if they have a lot of wide panning and people on the far sides are only hearing half of the song- I can't remember how many times I was bummed out during a concert because I couldn't hear half of a harmony or something. Speaking of mixing- the outro music is loud as hell my dude lol

How do you deal with stereo effects like zak's chorus and/or delay? If the guitar is right up the middle the chorus and delay will pan appropriately but if you pan the guitar at all, does that fuck up Zak's stereo chorus?

Killer interview, especially vis-à-vis bigger picture philosophies, approaches. Very enjoyable hearing his approach, experiences, etc. Would've loved to hear more about that superb Meyer pa hanging ... flown steerable sub arrays. I know that's often system tech work, and he mentioned that delineation. It's all good, I'm being picky, as you're killin' it. Dig this content

Midas has done a great job of creating an analog warmth and feel while mixing. I grew up mixing in analog and went thru the digital transformation a bit. Not a whole lot but I can mix on these consoles. Each brand has a bit of a different approach and terminology and it take a few minutes to get used to a console you have never mixed on regardless of digital or analog but much more so with digital. Of course the end game result is the same. It's best to find one or two that you like and stick with them. So he is using naked channels for the openers instead of scene saving or a bit of both to use all those channels.
