Back in 2006 I was the house guy at a venue. We had Rob Zombie, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, etc... All of those band's FOH guys were cool with out PA.... This guy walks in and the first thing he says is " we're gonna need a bigger PA, at least twice this amount" He didn't even listen to it.. I had to call my boss and have him send another truck full of PA. Sounded good tho.. And after the show Aaron Lewis took my friend on the bus to smoke a joint. good times haha

Jeff is the man. My band (KnuckleHead if you see this, Jeff. Long time, sir!) used to frequently play the club where he ran sound in Springfield, and in the same circles as Staind when they were locals. He could get killer drum tones faster than anyone ever, often after one hit. ("Kick...good, Snare...good" etc.) He just knew the room and the system so well. And the band I was in during high school recorded at his house in Westfield as well. I've always had the highest level of respect for him, and many kudos to the years of success! Nick, thank you for the feature on this legend!

Only 15 min into video and this cat is what built the industry. Buying out of the Carvin catalog to being with the same band for 30 something years. He speaks so much truth to get into the business. The only thing that stopped me was life getting in the way of following the path I wanted to travel.

As a venue engineer, I get to meet sound engineers from all walks of life, using all kinds of desks. Midas Pro2's come in with a touring acts just as often as a DiGiCo SD7s, Allen & Heath SQs and even M32s; a lot of the time I'm mixing the support act on my M32R. I recently worked with HardFi, and their sound engineer had 2U of outboard; one rack unit was his audio interface, which he used to tune the PA to his liking, the other was a Rupert Neve 5045 through he had Richard's vocal. Although he had the Rolls Royce of mixing consoles, he has a "less is more" approach. No plugins; just what was on the desk.... His mix was absolutely stellar. I've thought about drinking the outboard Kool Aid, but I've stuck with what's in my M32 and I'm producing mixes that I'm more than happy with. So, I do think that in some instances; less is more. I might make the investment into some outboard pre's, but that would be all. Would I buy an HD96? Yes, possibly in a few years time. The Pro2, while dated, is an incredible sounding desk; I wouldn't be making any rash purchases if I had one either. I relate so much to what Jeff is saying here...
