First getting the Pi 1 was so cool! Never before did I have such a small form factor computer. Other than using it as replacement desktop for a very short while, it served me well as minidlna server with my external hard drive attached so I could watch my movies on PS3 and save data without always having to hook up the external drive to my desktop at that time.

I remember trying to use a Pi1 with Wheezy as a desktop back in the day and gave up on that in a quick hurry. The Pi2 was much more suitable for such task.

Indeed, the Pi2 was the first quad core Pi and had 1GB RAM, which made a huge difference.

The issue with the Pi 1 and overclocking is the rudimentary/primitive power circuit that they shipped with it. The Pi 2 got a completely new an much more stable power system as a big feature.

I was even able to power it up uaing external powered usb hub connected to the usb port. Don't know if it is good cause it is designed to give power, not to receive it.

Thanks for that. It was interesting to see back in time. I remember it quite well The main part of the interest for a few mates and myself was always the ability to use the Pi to play around with. Now it seems a lot want the Pi just to be a fixed unit as it were. I do have zeros and zero 2w as well as most pi’s as well as a 4 8gb but there’s something about the first Pi’s and just the basic fun of it. Cheers again. Keep up the good work

From memory, 800MHz was the most that the RPi1 would overclock to and remain stable. The figures on Tom's Hardware looked ambitious and probably only a fraction of the RPi1 boards produced could sustain that amount of overclocking but then again, it's been a while since I fired up the old board.

Got a 512 in a kit from the UK in Dec 2012. Came as bundle with a well dodgy USB bus, which blew up after about month. Also had a wifi dongle, which was from a now defunct PI supplier. The case still looks cool - one of the originals in red with a pi logo. I've not used it for ages and it's just legacy stuff now, but I will dust it down and see what Buster looks like on it. I'm guessing the SD card has some cranky wheezy version. The SD card dangling out of it looks ridiculous! Exciting times back in the day, it was good basic fun.

The reason for why you couldn't install apps was because your package database was out of date if you read what it tells you it complains about not being able to find packages and tells you to run sudo apt-get update (This will refresh the database, upgrade will upgrade the packages which is what you were trying to avoid) as for overclocking i would generally not advise anyone to overvolt to 14 as that is the highest supported voltage for 99% of rpi's, you can technically do 15 but some pi's might not like that and i would also not advise anyone to just overclock straight to the highest, put in the default stock clocks then slowly raise them up by either 100mhz or 50mhz on each until you find the sweet spot (force turbo must be enabled otherwise you can technically overclock to insane speeds which are invalid and will cause performance loss instead of performance gains) and about your pi shutting down when you plugged in the fan... that fan might have drawn a little too much power for the pi to keep running and caused it to reboot, or something shorted and caused a restart orrrr there might have been a change to how gpio pins worked back then and how they do now but that is very unlikely

I had never gotten to see that before. First Pi I got was the 3 and Jessie was pretty good. I wonder if you could use the latest OS on the Pi1 and how well it would perform in comparison.
@terrydaktyllus1320
@terrydaktyllus1320 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can run the latest Raspberry Pi OS on it. I loaded it onto my Pi 1's recently in preparation for doing a Gentoo Linux build on them to check that they are working. It "just about works" once you've overclocked to 1000MHz but I wouldn't say it was a pleasurable experience. I certainly didn't try any YT video playback on it. I have started a Gentoo build to see if I can make something a lot lighter. It books to a console login prompt so I now need to decide what desktop to use on it. I normally use i3 or XFCE on my other Linux machines, but I am tempted to go "very lite" and put on a patched dwm build with st (suckless terminal).

I just dug mine out today mounted raspberry pup or fossa raspberry pup I can't remember with belena etcher and it ran wishing that there's enough kernel support for my Logitech k400 keyboard with a dongle that doesn't even belong to it or otherwise you have to install solaar and BAM it works! It's SLOW and I haven't even got on the internet yet because I'm trying to use a TP-Link hotspotter as an Ethernet wireless adapter because I only have one USB slot now!!! I have a Belkin adapter but no USB if I use it. So yeah fossa rasp pup has allot of cool network tools like frisbee but if you got a complicated work around like I'm trying it's a headache. I read in the comments that at least I might be able overclock to 800 mhz and that'll do maybe.

I know if you brick a zero you can plug it into a PC via the micro USB (not the power in) and the PC will ping up a new device and recognise it as BCM-blah-d-blah.....I believe so I bet it'd work on a big pi

Does the pi 1b usually overclock well or is it typically unstable? Also, would another version of raspbian work better? I don’t have one but if it can clock up a bit like the pi zero it may be a good replacement.

@terrydaktyllus1320
@terrydaktyllus1320 2 жыл бұрын
The default speed is 700MHz, you can overclock to 1000Mhz, maybe 1050MHz. Doing so makes a noticeable difference but running even the lightest desktop on it, the fact that it is only a single core CPU with 512MB RAM will hold it back a bit. The earliest Pi 1's had only 256MB RAM in them.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 Thanks for confirming the 256MB. I was talking with my son the other day about that his first Pi had 256 and that when he broke the first one, the update had 512. He couldn’t remember that at all, so I wasn’t sure if I was misremembering. I do remember that 512MB made a HUGE difference to desktop performance. The 256MB spent way too much time accessing the SD Card, which brought everything to a horrible crawl.

I do still have two Pi 1 model B and a model 1 B+. I also have two Pi 2, a Pi 4 (4GB) and a Pi 400. Quite the collection. I plan to add a Pi 5 (probably 4GB but maybe 8GB) sometime soon. I'm not quite the Pi addict like you but I'm not that far behind. 😁 I'm wondering if I can still find a Puppy Linux for the Pi 1 ... Incidentally, the sign of a wrecked Pi is usually release of that thing we call "magic smoke." 😉

Tries to type this on my Pi then realises I'm watching on my PC 🤣 Thanks to your advice about using a different display/usb audio I managed to run (using an old large TV) a couple of OS's that were not working on my smaller higher resolution TV. Still have issues with the desktop appearing partly outside my screen but with the info in this video (about HDMI modes) may now be able to solve that. 😁 Also found an old Soundblaster usb sound card I'd tucked away in a draw, works great with my pi400 though there was a little bit of crackling present in the sound that may just be my old speakers.
