Please keep sharing these clips, lovely reminders of Lisbon's trams and beautiful architecture

The south shore line and Chicago north shore lines used gauntlets at their passenger stations so that the freight trains could pass without hitting the platforms

Amazing how steep these gradients get sometimes

Yep - the trams do some real climbing!

It says more about the weather in Lisbon than the power of the trams. If it was not dry and warm enough they would be sliding all over. From what I recall, this is why the San Francisco cable cars were left on the steep streets.

Croydon tramlink has a section of Gauntlet track, just adjacent to "Tramway path" in Mitcham, where the tracks pass through a narrow cutting. Surprisingly, the roadname tramway path, actually predates the current tramlink. Presumably there was a tramway there in the past.

I already knew I wanted to visit Lisbon but now I know exactly what I want to see. This reminds me of being in some empty back streets of Milano and seeing tram tracks in the road. It was just a couple blocks from the Duomo in December of 2013 but it could have been nearly 100 years earlier. I wish I had time available to ride the trams then. I want to go back there too. Thank you

It's an amazing city.

Sorry, but that isn't gauntlet track, that's just interlaced. If it was gauntlet, it would have one gauge *inside* a wider one. Gaintletting is used instead of three rail where it's necessary to keep different gauge vehicles on the same centreline, typically for turntable access, and sometimes for platforms.

Sorry but I don't think you are correct. Every definition I have seen of Gauntlet Track uses the term interchangeably with Interlaced Track. For example, here is an article from 1931 describing the same setup as seen in the video as 'gauntlet track'. www.jonroma.net/media/signaling/railway-signaling/1931/Automatic%20Interlocker%20Protects%20Gauntlet%20Track.pdf

Gauntlet and interlaced are interchangeable terms. It can refer to what is shown in the video, in addition to dual-gauge track where one gauge is laid within another.
