As a previous comment said, you should lay the burn barrel horizontally to give a substantial increase in burn area. That'll really help this thing get going! Also, your air inlet may be blowing ash up through the turbines, thus creating the gray smoke. If you lay the barrel on it's side and change the air inlet such that it doesn't churn up ash, you might get a wickedly powerful and clean burn!
@cheerdiver2 жыл бұрын
Needs a furnace brick or ceramic tile to deflect incoming O2, and the way it angled into the barrel will really stir up a cyclone. SIMPLE STARTING METHOD, you have a truck that puts out exhaust, USE IT. Pipe the truck exhaust into the TURBINE side, as a practical means of spooling up the turbo. Maybe too hot on the compressor, and the gasses are depleted of O2. Insulate the burn chamber, loosing an excessive amount of heat. May want to place a water tub under the tank, should it 'China Syndrome'.
@TheRealTnT4u2 жыл бұрын
Once the fire gets hot enough there should be less ash. The grey smoke was probably from the waste oil. He could also mount the turbo's a few feet away from the burn tank to help keep the heat down on the turbo's too.

Upgrades to do: Line inside of barrel with refractory bricks, will stop the inside metal of the barrel from burning away. Get a better oil pump, turbo need higher pressure oil to last longer. Also find some way of cooling the oil and try to have the least resistance possible for the turbos oil drain. Try to find some way of stoping chunks of wood from being eaten by the turbo, not really sure of a solution that would survive the conditions of the inside of the barrel but maybe you guys can think of something.
@Stoney3K2 жыл бұрын
The best set up would be to make a concentric pipe-in-a-pipe which has lots of holes in it. That contains the firewood, and only part of the turbo's air is used to provide oxygen to the fire. The rest of it is used to cool the combustion chamber, and mix with the hot combustion gases so the air temperature at the inlet of the turbine is lower.

Due to the large internal capacity you need more wood. It will carry its own if you stacked up the inside top to bottom with wood, no need for the oil. It would also turn into one massive glowing red tank. I think if I built my own with the same tank I would fabricate four turbos to all plumb the exhaust off the top in a fashion where they all line up with an internal spiral of air. Then plumb the intake side into the bottom in a fashion to create a spiral of air that aligns with the exhaust up top. I would also fabricate hard steel lines for the oil and add a water cooled intercooler nearby covered in ice to cool the oil before sending it through the pump and back to the turbos. Better yet, draw up the design and hand it to a titanium exhaust fab shop to create a functional piece of art all burnt blue and purple.

I was on the edge of my seat terrified that the oil smoke would burst into flames like run away diesels can do. Please consider that and make sure the oil, I'm assuming it's used, doesn't have any contamination like gas or diesel to name two. I'm a pyro and almost became an organ donor from pouring my own used oil on a bed of coals and fresh wood that basically insulated the coals and provided a lot of surface area for the thin coating of oil to vaporize and violently ignite. Anyways, subscribed.

Conventional fires generate a lot of stuff that shouldn't really be allowed to get through a turbine wheel. I've seen a lot of these on KZbin that die pretty quick because of all the stuff that gets blown through the exhaust end of the turbo. Dunno how someone would filter out all the stuff coming off the fire and leave behind just the hot gas, but that would be one of the things to extend lifespan. Temperature of fluids is another issue. Great project you got here, and more solidly built than a few others I've seen thus far. Awesome work.

Staggered plates with some holes inside the burn chamber before the final outlet going to the exhaust turbine on the turbo. Basically it's a labyrinth setup where gravity does most of the work keeping junk out. You don't want it restricted much as velocity shouldn't pick up too much until the gases go into the outlet pipe. To keep most chunks from getting too stirred up in the first place the incoming boost air entering the chamber should go through some kind of burner pipe or diffuser.

having built a couple of these, granted on a much smaller scale... your oil returning at such a high temperature means you don't have enough flow. Also, you need to introduce your air into the top of the tank and make it swirl in a cyclone action, you have too much fuel at once. adding a perforated tube on the fresh air injection acts as a check valve and helps the whole system work much better.
@pcsmachineworks2 жыл бұрын
After reading some of the comments, I'm also going to add that you are more likely to have success in the vertical configuration. You don't need more surface area for burn, you need more and better air distribution. More surface area will cause it to continuously become more "rich" until it over smokes and snuffs itself again. If you really want to get technical with it, the ratio is about 5:1. 5 parts air to flames and 1 part air to the coals. My preferred method is to run one long pipe all the way to the bottom, weld a cap on the bottom of the pipe, then drill a series of holes along the pipe to distribute the incoming air. Make the holes point along the wall of the tank to create circulation, and do not drill any holes in the middle 1/3 of the pipe to provide a mixing area. It's hard to make a recommendation, but I use a 1/4" drill for a 3" pipe, and stick to the 5:1 ratio. 5 holes in the bottom 1/3 means 15 holes in the top 1/3 ect. It helps to also make the pipe easily removable so you can quick pull it, drill a couple more holes, slap it all together, and give it another go while the coals are still hot. Eventually it will take off and the turbo will self regulate. A few more tips: start with a small fire and get it going, then add more fuel. The lack of oxygen will prevent the wood from burning before its actually needed and it won't snuff out so easily. Add something that resembles a plumbing trap but with 2 ball valves so you can pour in waste oil or diesel fuel while it's still running and the liquid fuel will just puddle into the bottom. open top valve, fill pipe, close top valve and open bottom, in goes oil or fuel. Make sure you have some sort of bust disc built in, I've blown out the side of a 1" thick tank with a waste oil burner. If you get lucky enough to get a hot clean burner they can flash and bang pretty hard after adding more fuel and restarting.
@DustyEmma2 жыл бұрын
I think the waste oil was a big mistake…. But the concept is good… As others have said, laying the cylinder horizontally would make a much bigger fire
