Theatrical is what Kate does. She likes to present different characters in her songs, and the vocals often change accordingly. Also, she’s an astonishing lyricist. The maturity of the songs she was writing at age 17 is beyond belief. Going back to earlier recordings is a good idea. I’d recommend hitting“Babooshka” or “Violin.”

True story: a friend set me up on a blind date in 1991 with his girlfriend's college roommate. While we were waiting for her to show up at his old rowhouse on Capitol Hill in DC, my friend's girlfriend warned me her roommate was a talented singer but a little unconventional. Just then, a hand appeared above the shutters scratching on the front window, and I heard a voice singing this line from the song "Wuthering Heights" in a credible imitation of Kate Bush : " Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy I’ve come home, I'm so cold Let me in-a-your window Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy I’ve come home, I'm so cold Let me in-a-your window." Thus I met "Cathy." One day shy of a year later, we were married.

Kate Bush is artistically important and I hope you'll consider reacting to her again. Her vocals are powerful yet delicate. It may take additional listens for you to appreciate the strata of her musical genius. And she is very theatrical. That's part of who she is as an artist. What is your opinion of Pat Benatar's cover of "Wuthering Heights"? It's clearly more mainstream, with Pat and Neil Giraldo really turning it into a rock song, complete with soaring guitar solo. As open minded as I am, there are some things I totally don't get, to the point that I really don't like them but I try to at least analyze and recognize whatever it is that others are getting value from. I think you guys do a really good job at that. Kate's work is described variously as Art/Avant/Experimental Pop/Rock, and also draws on Glam, Classical and even Folk. So, very much Eclectic and Theatrical while eluding specific categorization. She doesn't generally play to the charts with singles, being more concerned with the overall album that may generate some charting hits. For myself, I liked some of her work but I had trouble connecting with some of it too. It was a love affair that grew over time. Every new piece that did turn me on also turned me on more to her whole body of work. That sort of appreciation also has a lot to do with ones personal circumstances in relation to particular music, and how it becomes associated with life experiences over time.

I figured you guys might not totally dig - Kate Bush and other art rock/post punk/ progressive pop styles are usually unconventional and vibey and don't have a lot of banging solos like guitars, etc. but it's still great stuff. It was super appropriate for the times as well.

Interesting note.... The Head-set microphone was developed for Kate as she does quite a bit of movement when performing. She was friends with Peter Gabriel who also adopted this microphone.... and the rest is history.

Maybe someone else mentioned this but Dave Gilmore let her stay in his house while she worked on her debut album. He supported her all the way. There's a great live performance of Gilmore playing this song with her on youtube.

"One of her records." My dudes, this is a must-play. "Hounds of Love" is stunning. The second side is a suite that has to be heard in one sitting. Plus, Side One is brilliant, too.

You also have to watch her videos. She was a classically trained ballet dancer and a master at choreography. The video for this song with all the dance moves increases pretty much anyone’s appreciation for the song. It also helps tell the story of the lyrics.

For me, there is this category of singers...call them unconventional, but they push bounds, not afraid to be themselves, get kicked out of prestigious music schools, weird, mysterious ,super "artsy" ..and they are some of the best vocalists I've ever heard....For female artists...Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Kate Bush , Bjork, Tori Amos, Aurora...(I'm sure people could add to this,) but even before "Stranger Things" Kate bush was amazing to me. I would listen to Wuthering heights over and over and your reaction song was also on the album I had. I encourage you to explore more of these artists...they are unconventional and IMHO some of the BEST!! I need to work on my list of male vocalists....but will start with Leonard Cohen for sure..

The song is actually about a woman who wants to swap bodies with her lover so as to allow him to experience their relationship from her perspective ("come on baby, come on darling, let's exchange the experience"). Hence the dance at the beginning representing lovemaking, with the initial lyrics "It doesn't hurt me, do want to feel how it feels, do you want to know it doesn't hurt me ..." It astonishes me how this all seems to be above most reactors heads, no offence!

Listen to the words, guys. It's about a relationship "you want to know if it hurt me ...... see how deep the bullet lies". "Make a deal with God and get him to swap our places". She wants to see things from her partner's perspective to better understand and help their relationship.

A & A: The guitarist is Alan Murphy, a session musician probably best known for playing lead guitar on Mike and the Mechanics 1986 hit "Silent Running," including the haunting guitar solo. A song definitely worth checking out, also a rather atmospheric song, but one I believe much more suited to your tastes. Murphy unfortunately died a few years later from complications of AIDS.

A lot of 80s music was about creating atmosphere and vibe and just sitting with it. Hard to explain how it hit our ears at that moment in time. We had been through 70s stadium rock which is a big exciting sound, as well as disco music which is about sped up tempo and obviously, dancing. So the atmospheric synth sound was a different feeling, it was like just being patient and sitting with it, and being almost hyper aware of every little key change. I loved it - it actually felt like suspense, and like being let in on a secret. It had a cinematic quality. There are so many 80s songs that created their own specific atmosphere or vibe but I won’t recommend them to you because it’s not your thing! I would recommend more Van Morrison to you though - one of my favorites from the era you guys are into.

I was a college freshman back in 1985 in Los Angeles and alternative radio station, KROQ was playing this song and it peaked my curiosity. It was different, poetic, and I liked her voice a lot, loved the percussion and the mysitcal feeling of the song. So with me not working yet, but looking for a job I decided to "go for broke" and get some albums I wanted on cassette (CD's were still very new and a CD player was still quite expensive at the time) through Columbia House where the extra album I selected was Hounds of Love and my experiences hearing that album quite impressed me. Most of the other 12 tapes I hardly played, but boy did I play that cassette consistently until I had to eventually replace it. Two years later I had my second part time job while still being a full time college student at a record store, and that year, Kate Bush's greatest hits compilation, the Whole Story was out, and we played that quite a bit (in fact from time to time in the next four years, we'd put it back in rotation from time to time) and I remember customers who were mainly there to browse and look at VHS tapes to rent would eventually get interested, ask about her, and buy The Whole Story album. I have been a major fan of hers ever since. As for Stranger Things, all I can say is that in season four they don't only play the song but it is part of the plot, and they picked a very good song for the meaning and the character involved. Anyway, I do encourage you give the song more listens and definitely make a point to hear the lyrics as it will further enhance it all. Enjoy in your discovery!

I had a feeling Kate Bush would be a tough sell on the younger guys... she is an artist that really needs to be associated with the context. There were not many female rock artists in the late 70s, and even at that, Kate was remarkably unique. Also, Kate pre-dated Madonna with regard to the use of male dancers on stage - it was completely unheard of prior to Kate. She was a marvel beyond her years, but admittedly, an acquired taste. Hearing her vocals, even Geddy Lee said, "Damn, that's' high!" Kinda cracking up that Andy said he thinks her first hit in 1978 probably has a wider universal appeal. Hmm..."Wuthering Heights"? Lol idk, guys. Now, it DID hit Number 1 in the UK. But it never broke the Top 100 in the US. Imo, when compared to Wuthering Heights, Running Up That Hill is a downright accessible pop song. I mean, I am a HUGE Kate Bush fan and was introduced to her thru Running Up That Hill (funnily enough, when I LITERALLY WAS in 8th grade!) and played my copy of Hounds of Love to death. But I actually didn't care for Wuthering Heights when I first heard it later, and it had to grow on me over time. I do love it now, tho! But part of what I love is its grandiose gothic drama and almost silly sounding vocals at times. So HAVING SAID ALL THAT, I would actually LOVE to see y'all react to it! SO PLEASE DO 😄🙏🏼 Alex, when you mentioned that you didn't care for the way Kate sings certain words because it sounded too theatrical, that is not some kind of misstep on her part. She is ABSOLUTELY going for theatrical! It's definitely her thing. And also, you nailed it with your cilantro metaphor. Because as others have pointed out, you either have a taste for Kate's music and love it, or it's just not for you at all. In general, I actually really appreciated everything y'all had to say in the video, because as usual, you're putting your thoughtful and intelligent music minds to work :) I do think it's important to understand about Kate that her main objective for making music and performing is pure self-expression. When someone is working in that pocket, you're definitely going to get an interesting mixed bag of things that work, others that don't as much, and certainly nothing highly accessible. For instance, probably one of her most beautiful and commercial sounding songs is the title track off of the first album, "The Kick Inside." However, the subject matter immediately takes away its commercial viability, as its meant to be a suicide note from a sister to her brother -- whose child she is pregnant with. And my personal favorite of Kate's music is the entire second side (back when we played records, heh) of The Hounds of Love. The first half of the album is all unrelated songs. But the second half, subtitled "The Ninth Wave", is a loosely conceptual piece about a young woman's journey after falling thru ice into a frozen lake. See? Pretty nichey and theatrical stuff! Oh, and not sure who is playing guitar on this track, but David Gilmour does play guitar on a song she did a few years after this one, "Love and Anger."
