back at ya: how does this compare to Anna's usual regime? for me it's around 6 or 7 hours per week, but multi sport, not only running.

Working up from 4-5 hours a week now, but that is on top of powerlifting ~ 6 hours a week.

Furlough for three months was an eye opener. Strength, motivation and tolerance improved hugely, with it being the focus every other day and running first thing in the morning instead of after work. The first week back to the rat race seemed to cause it all to ebb away again, other runners at work found that first week working and running hard too. Trying to maintain a furlough level of ability will be impossible I think. For motivation check out his book or the various podcasts David Goggings has featured on. Sounds silly but little snippets will worm their way into your subconscious and resurface when you need them.

That of sleep could be due to low electrolytes and or due to low liver glycogen stores from all the running. It takes around 48 hrs to replenish glycogen stores.

Training for ultras was 3 or 4 days a week and 3 or 4 days of rest. The week might be runs on Tue, Thu and Sat or Sat, Sun, Tue, Thu or Sat, Sun, Wed or some other like combination. The training usually was a long run with hills most weeks, a speed workout every other week, with the other days being tempo runs of 7 to 12 mile. My rest days were truly rest days. Nothing remotely like a workout. I tried a similar training regimen to the one in the video more than once and always came up injured. My workouts helped me do well in my age group competition so I feel they were better suited to my abilities and lifestyle.

I think it was interesting that the run you really really didn't want to do turned out to be OK once you'd gone through the mental battle of getting out the door. I think we can all relate to this scenario and it's nice to know it's normal and I'm not being a wimp when I'm tired and don't want to go out for a run.
@JonathanLindeque3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's runny how sometimes those runs that you're not so keen on, and start off with a grudge, often turn out to be great runs.... It helps a lot for the motivation... because next time you're not feeling grand... you think... hey! but maaaaaaybe this could be a great run! lol. I'll never know unless I do it (is my mantra then). I recently got a pretty decent time for a run I wasn't in the mood for (at the start) - I don't know... maybe it also has something to do with usually starting off slower on those runs - and finishing stronger.

Get a warm glow for rest of the day no matter what gets thrown at you plus helps with my quality of sleep and general recovery. It seemed like less running than I would have expected honestly. I think when I hear that Aliphine Tuliamuk runs 90 or so mile weeks now (likely more when actually training for something) I think about how long that would take me, but of course she is faster than I am. So it’s more “oh we each spent 90 minutes training Sunday morning” even if she covers 15 miles in that time and I cover 8.

Thanks for sharing! As you say, it's all relative - and as Anna said in the video, it doesn't seem like a lot because the training is measured in time not distance, but it all adds up 🙂

What hungry, tired, sour, happy, new level, incredible fitness, and a fog deep, never give up, limitlessness, learning more about your own mental, emotional state in 24hrs than in 10yrs of therapy. Lots of dead foot wear. Realizing that you can run more miles/km in one weekend, than you could in a month when you first started. The difference between an ordeal and adventure is attitude 😁

Excellent. Well done Anna. Having trained for and run Comrades, I can say that you really trained like a more elite runner than an everyday runner. Our Weeks were sort of like this: Monday: 15min warm up. 40 min Track. 10 min cool down. (Usually after a Sunday race) Tuesday: Rest and cross train. ie. swim or gym. Wednesday: Mid Week Long Run. 15km or 90 minutes. Thursday: Track session, sometimes hill repeats. (twice a month on hills) Friday: Rest and cross train. Saturday: 10 to 15km easy, plus a Parkrun, aiming for a PB. (Depending on a Sunday race) Sunday: Either a Long Slow Distance run, or a race, with a distance top up for anything below 15km. Well, that was the program. Not that I did everything. I am also no morning person. We do this from January until a month before Comrades, then ease back as we taper the last month.

I learnt Im not alone with feeling a bit sick after long training days on end. And that the weird sleep happens to everyone. And i learnt perhaps i should try morning runs lolz. I always say, im not a morning runner. but you are spot on with running in the morning would make you feel more achieved for the day. Thanks for the video. You are my fave online runner :-)

Well done Anna! Inspiring stuff! For the last 3 years I have done an intense 4 month schedule for an annual 24 hour race each September where I have run between 60 and 70 miles a week at the peak of the schedule which I have to fit around a 10 hour working day. 2 lessons learned for me are 1. having the right nutrition - especially at lunch time (regardless of how busy you might be) so that the evening session is easier; and 2. being part of a group - even if it is only on line - so that you have the peer group pressure every day to get you out of bed and on the road!

I'm an ultra runner. My longest is a 100 miler, I've done many 50 milers and 50Ks. In my training I average 70 km a week plus 3 weight training sessions plus mobility and stretching. I run several times in the same running clothes, wash it when it smells too bad (a little bad is ok). If I run several times a day I only shower after the last run.

Nice video girl. I’m taking on my first ultra this year and I’m learning so much about the sport and myself. I’m amazed at what I’m capable of and annoy your videos for advice and tips. It’s been fun trying out new techniques to find what my running style is. Looking forward to more.

Thanks so much, just back from solo, self supported fast pack on the southern upland way. 215 miles in 5 days, 23 hours and 29 minutes. Learned a lot on my first multi day ultra, 6 days of ultra distance. But loving learning some stuff here, especially the psychology side.

Wow, great work! Most ultrarunners power walk up hills, unless they're small ones, so good to train for that. When I started ultras, I found out there was more walking than I ever realized. I've never done two runs in one day, but good if you can do it!

I am fairly new to Ultra running (I ran a 50k race 3 years ago, for my 50th, with little to no training - I wouldn't recommend it!). I came across The Running Channel a few days ago whilst looking for advice, guidance, tips, plans and inspiration in all things Running. This has been such a great video to come across; it's filled with some fantastic tips, raw insight and tons of inspiring work. You gave a fantastic account of yourself 👌🏼. I have 14 months to get ready for DBR '23 and have 6 Ultras (technically 5 plus one long run of 20 miles/36k) to run in preparation for it. This video will help enormously and will be revisited, I'm sure. Thank you.

In addition to lots of training, it’s important to have a great support system. Family and friends need to know about your fitness goals. You will invest lots of time in your training. Your family may get upset that you’re not 100% around them. Therefore, communicate your goals. My best running was done when I was single and with less financial responsibilities. These days, the challenge is balancing running with work and family.

Great video! This is an interesting challenge and one that I feel would suit me. I am an early bird and run from 6 am onward as it gives me the start I need for the day. I work 10-12 hours on the computer and motivation end of the day is a non-starter. I am the same with fast running, long distance I enjoy it, 13 km Sat and 20 km Sun was the norm for me (just finished a week's holiday). My only concern at the moment is my back due to bad posture on the computer and kind of follows into my running... a big problem!
