I am so with you Sarah re 5k PB. I've been training really hard to improve my 5k time , hitting all my paces in intervals but in the last two 5k races I get to a point where I have the overwhelming need to walk for a bit. I mentally cannot manage the feeling of being so out of breath - despite having managed faster paces and feeling worse in training. I just need to forget about racing for a bit and get back to enjoying the run.

I have borrowed a mantra from your team "I can do tough/hard things". I also get to a certain point in my runs, today half way from home in the furthest point in the neighborhood and ask "Why am I doing this?" "It's fun right?" but 100% bask in the sense of accomplishment when I get home, and know it will make the next 5k easier for all the practice. Lastly - my neighborhood has a lot of hills, even ones you find while jogging that you don't feel in the car. I figure it adds to my training, but I haven't yet figured out flat spots to try some of the sprints TRC recommends (I just need to see of something flat-ish is 200 or 400 meters).

Great to see Phily on your channel. I've been following her journey on youtube since her channel's inception. I think she has huge potential and will only get quicker. Thought it was great she referenced people that believe strava times take preference over chip times. I know a few UK youtubers seem to quote strava times, as though GPS is infallible, over chip times with one even stopping their watch during a marathon when they hit 42.2 km. Bit disingenuous when you have platforms to influence people. No such complaints with the running channel. Keep up the good work.

Philly, I often incorporate parkrun into my long runs! I’ll run there, do parkrun, then run home! It does involve breaking the run up a bit unless you can perfectly time getting there for the start, and I usually hang around chatting after parkrun before I start running again too, but it gets the miles in!

Red light therapy has been well known for aiding in both recovery and injuries. Or a random little injury, or even a purchase of shoes that you just don't get on with. It's amazing how quickly running can go from 'this is my life now' to 'f*ck this sh*t, can't be arsed' The thought that has made me lose motivation for an extended period at least twice before, and I'm still yet to internalise a convincing argument to counter - "unless you're a professional runner, no one cares about or benefits from the times you run. You don't have the talent to be a professional runner, so why dedicate so much time and energy to it?" It turns out that when I only run when I feel like running, as much as I DO love running, I'm extremely lazy. The answer is no doubt to stop finding motivation through others' perceptions of myself, but that would require a total personality transplant
@saintsaens21
@saintsaens21 11 ай бұрын
@@SuperFuzzyDunlop Ah yes. I derive motivation though from timing my runs and having a roster of PBs from 100m sprints up to 10k, and staying on top of my game to beat them once in a while. Also, I consider jogs (even tempo stuff) as an accelerated stroll, just a way to cruise around the neighborhood while getting a solid workout.

It's an interesting question whether British Athletics is reducing the medal haul by leaving so many qualifying athletes at home. Could it be that the consistency of the competition for the medals is so tough that the chances of relative outsiders picking them up is very low? Is it reasonable to be so focussed on medals to the exclusion of other good results and also the value of giving athletes experience? Is the decision driven by economics?
@michaelgibson25
@michaelgibson25 11 ай бұрын
I suspect it is due to economic reasons. I believe GB athletics have been trying to tighten the purse strings for years. Doesn't seem fair on the athletes though especially when you've missed the QT by such a small margin. I also think it would be a real shame that young athletes will miss on experiencing the Olympics when they don't have much expectation on them. Katarina Johnson-Thompson wasn't going to medal at London 2012 (finished a respectable 13th) but I'm sure the exposure helped her achieve gold at 2019 World Champs.
@blackhellebore89
@blackhellebore89 11 ай бұрын
It's the same in NZ with different sports. For archery we had 2 athletes win spaces for Tokyo (there are certain competitions and you have to win them, it's the first time in forever NZ has done that). We had 3 archers shooting over the minimum qualifying scores but because they had no reasonable chance to finish in the top 8 the NZOC let go of the spots. It is mostly economic. It's the same for other sports. Usually if you are ranked top 16 internationally you'll be able to go. The catch is, you can't be top 16 in archery without being on the circuit - and archery is a self funded sport here.

British Para swimming only prioritise medalists so if you are capable of making a final you aren’t gonna get a place. I feel this is bad mentality because we need the next level down eg places 4 to 8 athletes to learn from top competitions before they become the new medalists

The UK athletics selection criteria for athletes sent to the olympics is so stupid and nonsense, idk what where they thinking. Who benefits from sending less athletes to the olympics?
