Lucky you!!! I adore Runrig--especially the MacDonald brothers. Brilliant songwriters and musicians. A relatively new fan, I'm just beginning to distinguish Donnie's voice from Bruce's; in my humble opinion, they're both wonderfully gifted singers. Donnie's pure voice soars; Bruce's voice is earthy and gritty. But we mustn't overlook Rory--something about his voice tugs at my heart when he sings lead... Respect from an American lass!

I think what Run Rig shared with their music was a link with the culture they were brought up in. They made it cool to speak (Scots) Gaelic to lots of young people who used to think it was only a sign of backwardness. The pride they show with their music is something that everyone can aspire to - the only boundaries are what you let be put up. Alba Gu Brath!

I also have a very strong sense of the supernatural.

You're forgetting the major Norse input to Gaelic Scotland. The Goraidh of the song was Guðrøðr Crobh-bhán. Several important clans claim him as their ancestor. Scots Gaelic was 'made in Scotland' by mixing Middle Irish from Ireland with Norse, plus Pictish and Brittish. You don't have to pretend it was 'always there' to make it Scottish now. Everybody and everything originally came from somewhere else, just as there are lots of influences in the music. It's the final mix that gives the blas.

Yes there is Norse influence in Scotland, it's hard to put everything in a KZbin comment. Well I never said it was "always there", I think Celtic languages (in the Q form) arrived 500 BC or thereabouts in Scotland but I'm not sure (don't think any one is). And since it's IndoEuropean it has to have come from the Caucuses around 4,000 years ago! Linguists do now think though that Q Celtic was first and so Gaelic was already in Scotland before the new P shift (Picitish(British) from the SE.

I'm Scots as are all my family going back generations. Love all of Runrig's work, listened to it for years, but as I'm from the southwest (Ayrshire, although generations back from Argyll), was never exposed to gaelic / taught it at school. Does anybody know a good internet source of the english translations of Runrigs gaelic music as its kinda crazy that after all these years of appreciating their music I still struggle to grasp the lyrics of the gaelic songs ..

@this0033 The problem with Bruce is that he's not Scottish. He's Canadian and has this country and western music tembre in his voice that I can't cope with. For me Runrig were a symbol of Scotland and they've lost a part of this when they decided to have a singer from a different cultural backgrund. It was never about having the best or a perfect singer. It was about identity and singing in gaelic and I can't explain what else. When Donnie left, they lost their soul.
