I think he could have enlarged on the role of drag ("... the court jester...") more and pinpointed ot more. The jester was the only one who was allowed to make fun of the King/Queen/Emperor. So, the role is also to, through humor, criticize and point out the stupiditiy of certain rules and structures of power, I think.
@mishlake15 жыл бұрын
You're exactly right. It's about transgression through the appearance of conformity. The fool (jester) is the most powerful person in the kingdom because only he gets to critique the king and influence his decision making. If he tells the king the truth and makes him laugh, then he is safe. If he is vulgar and offensive, he pays with his life. So he has to be clever enough to almost sugar-coat the powerful critique so that it appears like a satirical homage rather than a drag. It's a very fine line, which is what makes it so impressive when it's done well at high stakes.
@44cosmonaut385 жыл бұрын
He has actually said that many times before on his podcast! It's really good if you havent listened to it, he often goes into all this brilliant meta views on life.
@SheenaBoBeena845 жыл бұрын
Johannes Halberstadt I get the homosexuals making fun of heterosexuals but by your definition of camp they should be women making fun of straight white old men, the last demographic who should be mocked is women with the logic of mocking who's in power. There was one episode of RuPaul's Drag Race that featured women and Ru had butches dressed up femininely, you couldn't give a more misogynistic pro bullying message then that. The concept you've portrayed of drag has a lot of potential but this execution couldn't be more off mark for the stated goals. Or maybe it's not off the mark and you're just not being accurate about what the goal is.
@thehoneyeffect5 жыл бұрын
Following on from Johannes has said... A court jester is a type of clown… Like a comedian, or harlequin, or a hobo clown, drag queen, or a Morris dancer, a mime artist, a mascot, pantomime and minstrelsy even shamanism. Most clowns that originate from Europe were actually derived from blackface and the mockery of the moors (aka black people) and the long-standing subliminal fear that white people have of being genetically annihilated in Europe after the fall of the 800yr Moorish Empire in Spain 1492. Black face make up later turned into white face make up 🤡. The ‘court jester‘ has always made a commentary on cultural fears/absurdities/humour, be that pertaining to race, gender, class etc I agree with you he could’ve expanded on the topic but probably in some kind of seminar or talk not on a talk show. They just have to plug shit then go.

@Mike Rotch right? It was really disappointing considering she's literally worn a dress made of stuffed animals before, and of course her meat dress. She's literally been the accidental queen of camp but people are making a big deal about a giant pink muumuu, a black ballgown, a slimmer pink ballgown, and then lingerie. She missed the theme horribly imo. She wore campier outfits on her Joanne tour.
@lebum975 жыл бұрын
eiri goldpetal I agree with you in that her outfits were plain but I feel she fit theme perfectly. Camp doesn’t have to be over the top and extravagant imo. Lady Gaga changing from outfit to outfit was more of an performance. It seems to me that each outfit was an statement on some famous Hollywood archetypes and women. For example the black dress with the umbrella was very reminiscent of Mary Poppins, then it transitions to a a Barbie-esque of a superficial woman, then the final outfit was like you said lingerie but I got a femme fatal sense from it. She took 16 minutes changing from outfit to outfit surrounded by cameras all of them waiting to see what was next. I would argue that she fit the theme just fine.

"What we do in drag now is more important than ever!" if that's true, why send home Nina??? It literally makes no sense.

Producers have a say in who goes home also. So they could be sending girls home as part of a shock factor for the audience.
@melsyoutube5 жыл бұрын
It’s not shocking, it’s predictable and infuriating. Plastique, Shuga and Nina should’ve never been sent home when akeria, silky and yvie are still there.

This was probably the most educational video of a talk show I've ever seen due to my ignorance of camp, it sounds like something I'd love to explore.
