Yes, we do need to be honest about where we are. And yes we must talk about preparedness and adaptation. However, we must still fight to limit every tenth of a degree of warming. This must remain the top priority as higher average temperatures will only make the climate impacts more severe and more frequent. Surely we need a more balanced approach as you go on to say. There is great danger in saying we’ve failed. As I’m sure you mean, the message needs to be more nuanced. The danger is we get written off and ignored. The Party of failure. We need honesty anbout climate annd ecology and communicate our clear approach to mitigation and, as you say, more on mitigation.

Well said. Being honest also means being honest about uncertainty, and that is a strength because the biggest uncertainty is how society and politics reacts to the crisis. That allows us to present a positive vision and contrast it with business-almost-as-usual. Yes, we were right and climate change is here, but that doesn't necessarily help us focus on urgency and where it will stop. Adaptation can help people think about some practical realities like flood protection, public health and modernising housing, but as a policy priority it doesn't have the lead time of mitigation issues around fossil-fuel infrastructure.
