quick notes: -On your third poke the mid thrust does more damage than the high thrust -And before people get confused charged counter thrust only counters at the moment you let go of the charge. It doesnt auto counter an incomming attack. It also does slightly more damage than true charge slash on GS on max damage, so it can hit really hard -Leaping thrust isnt new but the fact that you can use it as your first poke without guard advance or power guard is new -After a perfect guard you can press triangle+circle to do the follow up rush attack, but in the demo it is very akward to use since you will probably overshoot and be foreced to do the reverse sweep, which is sad becaus the strong thrust+twin finishing thrust does great damage

did it though? you recover into block so much faster now, and block does counter damage without having to perfect block. also in the beta the only move that's not blockable is the big scream the bear does that then opens up like 6 wounds on him. every move the flying zinogre does is blockable. all of them. that is extremely unusual given in world we didn't run into an unblockable move until anjanath.

good to you, once monsters started doing ground effects , lance started becoming hard. devil jho's dragon death mist around you, you need to drop shiled and run, Valkhana doing ice ground under you, so you can't block. Thankfully in Rise they dropped all those ground effects. I think Rise's lance is more fun because you can block from all angles and do a ton of damage.

that wide swipe actually deals like double the damge of a normal poke and totally worth useing . I use it usally as my second hit in the 4 hit cambo. it seems to me for maximum dps you need the leaping trust and the wide swipe in the cambo and end it with the charged attack or th triple poke. and that counter wow , it deals more damage and it doubles it !

Why I think a press and hold mechanic will work. Tapping on the High Thrust Button performs the High Thrist But Holding down the High Thrust Button performs a Counter Thrust. Works the same in Wilds buy you can do a Counter Thrust by holding the button down. You can weave this I'm with Mid Thrust. Also a Shield Bash option when performing Dash Attack

@@blackyvertigo A skilled lance player can take little to no damage while staying highly aggressive like other weapons with much worse defense, it's really easy to be precise when moving and attacking, and it always gets the best damage on hits while keeping the benefits of being a cutting weapon by default. Sharpness and learning to not get rocked by monsters are the only things balancing out the lance's usefulness. Well, that and having to lean hard into reducing chip damage.

@@CiromBreeze Yeah, whats actually missing is Cross Slash, because it did huge dmg so every insta block felt super rewarding. Here in Wilds all you get for perfect guarding is... Huh... Nothing? That baby shield bash does less dmg than a normal poke, and Payback Thrust sucks. Low motion value + super long animation, why would you ever do that? Its much better to just chain a perfect guard straight into your next poke combo. There is so much wrong with Wilds lance and I cant believe some people are actually happy with it.

@@soranamae While the baby shield bash does a small amount of damage, it's a passive damage that ticks every single time you block, whether it's perfect or not. Perfect Guard just reduces chip and stamina consumption and gives you access to the stronger Return Dash. Sure, it's not the damage output of Cross Slash, but I think being able to block after literally anything you do (instead of having to stop a combo for the Adept Guard) AND having a passive damage tick for EVERY block you do, is far more aggressive. I think once people play the actual game and get used to the combo patterning, it'll be far stronger than people are currently willing to admit. It's significantly more aggressive than it ever has been with an up-time that skyrockets with player skill. Also, there's literally NO skills on the lance build right now that directly impact how effective it is. Just consider the fact that OFfensive Guard triggers on every block and you can now chain a block between every single move. It's obviously going to be better than what you get for the first monster lol

8:18 Leaping Thrust isn't a new move, but its input changed. You used to not be able to do it from neutral like you can in Wilds though I admit I don't remember its input in older games. It was usually the best attack to use if you were using Elemental Lance in Rise/Sunbreak because of how many hits it did. It however feels nerfed in this game in the distance it covers. I hope they adjust some of the damage numbers for the full release. None of the responses from a block feel particularly good. Payback Thrust barely does more damage than a regular poke even from a perfect block. Also perfect blocking still does chip damage on heavy attacks which is a strange choice. Also find it weird that you can't go into charge counter from neutral. Having its only route being after the triple poke is kinda awkward and charge counter feels less smooth than the counter stance from World/Rise. And I still hate how Capcom keeps making the sweep do so much damage. I absolutely hate using it.

Iirc for rise in neutral you have to poke once then hold RT + direction stick + south button which will lead to the guard advance in any direction, then east button will do the leaping thrust, which used to do three homing hits, you then can directly chain into another guard advance, usually backwards so that the next leaping thrust will be at the same position, rinse and repeat. Kinda silly spammy but it is really effective for ele and stats

This is more parry lance than counter lance since we can put guard up whenever we want. Counter lance got folded into power guard along with Anchor Rage which I think is a good choice, it'll just take some getting used to.

The sweep is very slow though, so I wonder how good it is compared to a poke in term of dps. Definitely worse when it comes to precision, risk taken, and flow. Might be usable as an early finisher option when you have to cut your combo short but still have a little time before you need to block. Definitely the go-to (and, honestly, only) option when it comes to cleaning up packs of small monsters.

I've began memorizing the old guard dash + shield bash and then after it hits instantly throw in the new focus shield, ez fast 2-KO bonks in after another. Have played with Lance since World so the new attacks and paths are a little tricky to learn, but its getting there, fun stuff.

As a main Lancer i will just mention that the wide sweep is more a situational move that we don't use often. That being said one usefulness of the move that i find is that it work great when you are surrounded by annoying small monsters like Jagras or those weird bugs in wild to wipe them out fast.

Nah it does enough dmg in the beta that people are finding High poke > sweep > low poke > triple jab to be the optimal combo. Also it's super nice for hitting high up tails with focus mode, got a clean tail cut on Rey dao using it.

the wide sweep is charge-able and at full charge might be your hardest hitting ability. definitely is in rise if my regular pokes are 200 that charged wide sweep is over 500.

For me, it is much better to stay in focus mode all the time. If you go key binding, you can assign a key to toggle focus mode on and off so you don't have to hold the button all the time. While you are in focus mode, you can change the direction of your attack in mid combo. Your attack will face the direction your camera is facing no matter which direct you start the combo. Also, you can do directional poke/thrust. Press direction key and do poke poke poke combo so you can reposition yourself while attacking. When you are in focus mode, you don't have to worry about dodging or blocking facing wrong direction. You will always be facing the direction where your camera is pointing. I do not see any disadvantage being in focus mode all the time. Please let me know if there are any

Optimal DPS for the 4 hit combo is 1) leaping thrust, 2) wide sweep, 3) mid thrust 4) triple poke. The fourth hit can be swapped to the charged high thrust if you expect to intercept a hit. Gone are the days of high, high, counter, high, high, counter. I find that monsters like to move A LOT in Wilds so simply tapping the lock on camera isn't much help right now. I'm forced to use focus mode and continuously readjust my positioning which is annoying. Probably a couple more hours and it'll become second nature or maybe I should change the camera settings to follow the locked on monster... As it is, I'm having enough issues with dropped inputs and having to mash buttons until attacks come out then start mashing buttons for the next attack. I'm getting 45-60 frames on my 3070 laptop after futzing around with the settings long enough. Anyone else having an issue where they hold the shoulder button for item swapping and the gyro cam kicks in and screws up everything? I have gyro off so don't know why this is happening. I can't use the radial menus because the Right Stick is stuck to 1 quadrant and my camera is tilting all over the place. I do have L1/L2 and R1/R2 swapped. Will try unswapping them later and see if this solves the problem.

I had the opposite issue where using Gyro bound to the Focus Mode button would also bring up my item/coating menu, so I’d be swapping items and coatings around by just playing the game

@@davidhower7095 I turned swap off and gyro became bound to focus mode too. To fix this I went into Steam controller settings and made gyro "hold a button" to enable which effectively turned it off entirely. I'm on a Switch controller and bound it to the capture button. I imagine PS controllers may have this issue too on Steam but wouldn't be a problem on console.

If you have frame generation on it will really make you have bad input lag, cause ur real frames are half the value you get with frame generation and then you get some more input lag on top of that.

The thing about wide sweep that’s really good is it can be a tool to delay your combo if you see the monster is taking a bit more time to attack and you want to land that sweet sweet charge counter. And I’m actually so mad that you found the jousting move! I discovered it about it like 30 minutes before the beta ended and I was watching all giddy like “ I bet Ruri doesn’t know about the mounting move and I’m gonna make a petty snarky comment” you took that moment away from me! The thing that you said about the Lance’s reverse sweep was technically false, it’s not: “hold back on the thumbstick and press triangle AND circle,” it’s actually just: “hold back on the thumbstick and press triangle” Additionally, the most damaging combo is no longer the high poke combo but the MID poke combo and finishing out with the triple thrust (which is the mid poke finisher you press with triangle, or “Y”)

exactly. the mid poke combo is more damage overall because the third hit is super high damage AND it's significantly faster. it's higher damage and higher dps with the lowest animation commitment. you then choose between increasing your animation commitment (and murdering your sharpness) with the new triple poke follow up or if you cant commit and need to move/block soon you just high thrust III.

with the new simplified perfect guard cancel from any move set, guard dash is kinda unusable now, you should either perfect guard or directly into power guard, thats it, in world, guard dash is somekind a follow up guard, after you succesfully counter guard before (because it lock you in animation) for in case the 2nd attack from the monster are coming, but now in wilds, you can cancel any move into perfect guard, which give you an option, to counter thrust or stay on guard, wilds lance basically a simplified version, with extra 4th poke options I hope they bring back the mechanic from rise to keep the agro of the monster on you since you are basically the tanker in this game

It feels like learning a completely new weapon and starting from scratch. I put 15 hrs into the beta with lance and I feel like Im still terrible at it. Its so clunky and unresponsive. All the things I used to do effortlessly in Rise, I feel like I have to hammer my inputs to get my character to do anything. Focus mode is also mandatory to play lance now, it feels so bad without it.

Lance is pretty much the only weapon ive used through 3u, frontier, gu, worldborne, and risebreak and the wilds lance feels worse to play than any of those (imo). What fucking genius at capcom decided that removing counter thrust, binding backhop to additional inputs, and making the high poke animations painfully sluggish was a good idea.

To me, the biggest issue with Lance is that the monsters in the demo just...don't hit you..? I see an attack coming, I try to perfect guard it, the attack misses and I lost damage uptime. And that's basically 90% of my counter attempts, which severely subtracts from the bulwark feel of Lance that I always loved. Now you just stand there and poke all day with your infinite poke loop while the monster misses you with nearly every single attack. Gunlance feels so much more consistent and easy regarding perfect guards, while also dealing more damage. I love what they did to Lance in Wilds, but it's so much more difficult to play it effectively than it was in previous games. It's also more difficult to hit monsters because the repositioning was removed from your standard combo rotation (Poke, Poke, Poke, Dodge/Counter, Repeat). You can still do it, but it results in fewer attacks in the same time frame, and you can't actually turn well while poking anymore, meaning you have to rely on Focus Mode to turn during combos which is difficult since you have to turn the Right Stick while pressing Triangle or Circle at the same time. Out of the 14 weapons, Lance is easily the most difficult to use effectively for me in Wilds when compared with its World and Rise iterations.

It kind of feels weird that you're losing DPS uptime because you aren't getting hit and can continue to infinitely loop the poke chain. If anything, DPS should be higher, no? Guarding with Lance in pretty much every game has been about response and not waiting. It's especially better in Wilds because you can chain a guard at the end of ANY move at any point in the combo. So if you're not being hit, you shouldn't be guarding and subsequently missing out on honestly negligible DPS (the guarding animation is like maybe 5 frames long). This sounds less like a problem with the lance and more of a problem with your spacing and reaction time. Which isn't to say the classic, "git gud" -- it makes sense seeing as this is a demo against monsters you've never fought before on a weapon with a fairly substantial change to its attacking pattern. For example, you say repositioning is harder now, but it's objectively easier. Put Focus Mode on toggle and your strikes will pretty much hit the exact same spot every single time with minimal reason to move or reposition outside of the monster itself moving, which you have a LOT of tools to use to keep up the onslaught. You can't turn with mid-thrusts, but you can move as you do them. You CAN turn the camera with high thrusts, however. So, with focus mode on toggle, your mid thrusts will follow the center of your screen and your high thrusts will follow wherever you point the camera. The former is not worse than other games and is actually better because you can reposition AS your thrust, and the latter is a direct upgrade.

Depending on the damage output, not sure I'm the largest fan of the old "adept" guard / perfect guard. There was a skill which allowed you to significantly increase damage output from a last second guard in the 5th gens. Rise reintroduced adept guard. However, this also made it do a lot more damage than literally every other playstyle. This meant that playing other playstyles for Lance would gimp you with damage. I'll reserve judgement until the final product releases. Other than that, great video. Having extra follow up for mid poke and a timing counter on high poke is very nice. One final note on the wide sweep: it now seems to have an angle which may be useful for flyers. TBD.

I first picked up Lance in MH Rise and fell in love with its agile moveset, the ability to manually enforce aggro and the instablock ability. The leaping thrust and wide sweeps were game changer moves that made positioning and attacking behind the player possible. I tried out Lance in Wilds but sadly did not feel the vibe. The leaping thrust is punished with end lag, the wide sweep cannot be charged, the instablock was turned into a voluntary stationary bunker move that drains stamina, the sharpness nerf will make skills such as protective polish and razor sharp overtake skills such as offensive guard or guard up.

A lot of people didn't like Wide Sweep for Lance. Wilds Lance took me a little time to get used to, but it's very strong. There's a charged counter that's one of the most powerful moves on any weapon- if you manage to land it. Regular blocking has the same window as Insta-Block, so I don't know why you're trying to Power Guard when you can just tap the block button.

I think it's better if you try lance in World too and compare it with Wilds, because Risebreak's lance is an entire new thing, different from how it was in previous games. Everybody hated charged wide sweep btw, it felt so clunky and unnatural to the weapon. Also, it doesn't matter if wide sweep cannot be charged in Wilds because it still deals around the same damage a charged one did in Rise.

Power guard not going into leaping trust directly is a big ooof! Now you need to do power guard > shield advance > leaping thrust. Focus strike I hope Capcom fixes, its incredibly unreliable to use compred to other focus strikes. Not only is it hard to land the shield hop, but the follow-up animation misses all too often. Other than those I'm relatively happy with the lance. It still allows you to do sidestep from default stand like in world by pressing R2+L2 LEFT+X which is something you very rarely need but is a good tool to have. So you dont need to do: poke->sidestep. I do miss counter thrust, because even if it wiffed it didn't matter much. Now with prefect guard, if you wiff you really don't have good followups so you're kind of hectically pressing guard in the hopes it does a perfect guard.

It'll be interesting to use my main weapon in Wilds with all the guard changes, but I'll give it a fair shake. I am curious though about what people are planning on using as a side weapon now that we can do that with the lance? The first thing that came to my mind was bow and take advantage of a constitution build - but I'm not really sure how much you can skimp on guard or guard up yet to use more appropriate skills they'd both utilize. With a bow you can cover for the few places your lance's reach can't hit consistently like upright wings and the back. I'd also imagine it's another fun weapon to use while mounted - really hyped for that lance action on the sacred.

Just want to point out, you don't need a Perfect Guard to trigger the auto bash. At a little after 17:10 you do not Perfect Guard the tongue attack, but you still bash.

It can in fact be blocked, its just a matter of positioning. I was also struggling with blocking this attack until I tried spacing myself from him as soon as I saw him charging the first stomp he does before following up with the earthquake, so that he would do it directly in front of me, and yeah, I blocked it. If youre too close to him the only option is power guard I guess to get that 360 degree coverage. Its one of those attacks that magically hit you from behind due to being an aoe.

Can anyone help me with a strange kind of long blocking animation a stumbled into while fighting a Balahara? It attacked me with a ranged mud attack and I sorta did the clash, but it had a different name.. maybe it's just me going crazy, but please let me know if anything similar happened to you

Yeah the same happened to me multiple times fighting Balahara, I also don't remember the name, but it's definitely a special block. I wonder if this will happen for every monster that has a continuos attack animation.

Lance main here... The more I play this lance the more i hate it. I see a lot of potential in it but it is so un-lance like. The weapon is so clunky, a lot of moves screw up your positioning by unnecessarily moving you around, a lot of the accuracy we used to have now feels like its gone. Now we have an extremely slow and inaccurate weapon. Now they made wilds lance exactly what non-lance player thinks about how clunky lance was.

Agree, seems like the moveset is balanced around having focus mode always on, since you can pretty much ignore positioning and keep aiming your pokes and perfect-guarding. It sucks. Focus mode completely revamped the MH combat (for the worse imho). I believe most weapons’ optimal play will be with focus mode always on, sadly.

my second hunt with the lance was a 2:16 on a chatacabra. I know he's a very easy fight, but it does a lot of damage. I had a lot of trouble actually making much use of counter thrust though - it felt like the timing rarely matched up and I was better off just getting more uptime than trying to line up a counter.

I'm not too keen on the wound mechanic but it does seem like you dont have to use it all the time since the wounds also take more damage until they explode by themselves, maybe getting the knockdown anyway. Wound attack is cool from time to time but it's also really strong and common. At least a guaranteed stagger everytime every 20 seconds in 4 player hunt just feels like you just have to take it but then it feels like you aren't playing your weapon.

The triangle/low thrust is the better attack. It allows you to reposition and I don't have frame data but I'm fairly sure it comes out a couple frames quicker than the circle. I could be wrong about that. But not about it being the better attack. My 3'31 chata compared to the 4'05 the circle attack took says so.

@Bringingmoneyback while that in base rise it was bottom tier dps wise in sunbreak got buffed to the point it was better than most weapon in dps. Beta wilds lance have the same problem that it has in world/ib and base rise, which is the damage values are so low, so the dps is very bad. Hope that it changes on day 1 mh wilds

Yeah, lance sharpness is pretty bad. It's worse than both gunlance -and- dual blades now. As far as I've seen, it's actually the worst on sharpness of all weapons by a noticeable amount. Definitely needs to be toned back a bit.

I like the Lance but I feel like some things need a bit of Quality Of life and Options. First would be adding a press and hold the option to High Thrust Button letting you choose High Thrust or Charge Counter Thrust. It all depends on whether you press to get High Thrist or hold down to get Counter Charge Thrust. Another idea is to give the option to Shield Bash when performing a Dash Attack. This would give us more choices on Damage or KO status. Lastly Leaping Thrust feels slower and less impactful. It needs to have a better recovery and do three hits like it used to. Wait, you think leaping thrust is a new move? it's always been there... They just moved it around where the sweep used to be as a new opening option so you don't have to be in guard. Also you didn't point out the sweep when you do the pokes. You also didn't point out the guard dash and leaping thrust combo that's been a thing for years. Leaping thrust been nerfed btw. it only hits twice instead of three times and it's slower.

The bad thing about high thrusts, is that even though each attack is stronger, 3x high thrusts takes longer to execute than 3x mid thrusts. I don't know if this is a bug or a beta thing. Also the 3rd high thrust do not have bonus damage, compared to mid thrust that do. Coming as a lance main, while it may not look bad to the regular user, I'd say this is a rather bad nerf to the weapon.

I think they made it so you can change the timing on when you can unleash your counter thrust. It deals TCS levels of damage in the demo if you countered an attack.

Never really played lance before but last night i gave it a shot before the demo closed and it was a lot of fun. At this point I am still fairly confident I will be a Bow main with Sword and Shield sub. However Dual Blades, Insect Glaive, Switch Axe and Lance have all been impressively enjoyable more than previous entries. Oh boy did they dish out this Bow main some sweet treats though, popped a tracking arrow on a fleeing Rey Dau flying high over the map I launched a full charged Dragon Piercer and put him back on the ground where my teammates were waiting.

The Lance changes are dividing Lance mains quite a bit, but I do think we maybe just need to give ourselves some time to adjust and see how we're feeling after the full game has been out for a bit. Who knows what else they'll adjust before then, personally I enjoyed Wilds Lance a lot.

wild's lance is definitelly an improvement from wolrd and rise but man i wish they had kept the claw counter.... as for the slap.. why it still does high damage you slaping a monster with a thrusting weapon for fucks sake, make its dmg be trash but deal some stun, that way you at least kinda of have a mini stun combo, as you could focus attack, then do the jump and shield bash and the slap.
