Ruroc Lite Helmet and Goggles detailed review

Great review! My friend has Anon's new helmet and their goggle set up with the MFI system. I have the Ruroc Lite. Overall your review nailed it. I agree about the ear cups being an issue. As a motorcyclist youre taught to pull a helmet down by the straps, you can't do that with the Lite without the pads clipping out, I find I have to put on my helmet and take it off very delicately. My only other complaint was the positioning of the BOA dial. On other helmets it is mounted in the helmet itself, on the Lite it is on a band kind of underneath the helmet making it harder to adjust with one hand while wearing gloves. I would love to see a review of the shockwave system for the Lite because if those ear pads can stay firmly in place of the helmet then that would be amazing. Additionally, I feel like goggles for 180$ or the complete system should include a free pair of clear lenses because most of Rurocs competition includes two lenses and have for a long time. Overall though, I am very happy with the product despite the small quirks and have followed this brand since their first motorcycle helmet!

I’ve picked up a set of anon goggles to try them out against the Ruroc goggles in a future video as they’re roughly the same cost, but initial impressions are the optics are better but the Ruroc goggles breathe better. The shockwave ear cups I tried last weekend and they are attached in the same way and come out just as easily but also have a wire so makes it more annoying if you pull them out accidentally. I actually didn’t have an issue with the BOA dial, the rubberised finish made it a lot easier than other helmets I have to twist it, but I’ll watch out for it when I’m using it next week.

I’m pretty sure there’s some way of doing it, I think once there are more of them out there you’ll see people 3D printing parts for it in the future

I’ll let the Ruroc guys comment on that but it probably wouldn’t be until next season. I’ve used the helmet all season now and whilst it can be annoying once you get used to it, it doesn’t happen all that often... it still does happen just nowhere near as bad as it did when I was first using it

I just got my Ruroc lite helmet in. Unfortunately the ear pieces falling out are so bad that its a deal breaker for me. Hard to believe this passed your R&D phase. I'm returning the helmet

Very detailed review, well done. I have 3 rg1-dxs and I love all of them. I wear them when snowboarding and of course...esk8! This helmet saved my live many times, both on and off the slope. So from that point of view, totally worth it. With that being said, I'll never buy anything from ruroc when they aren't on sale. Their regular pricing is pretty staggering to say at least, I don't know if it's a part of their business strategy or something.

All 5 of my RG-1DX helmets I’ve bought on sale as there’s always a Black Friday sale and end of season sale… so I think unless you can’t wait (because of the season), or you want something really specific then it’s probably not worth buying them full price. I love the products, but you’re right the pricing is getting wilder each year but i kinda wish they would update the design of the RG1-DX a little but it feels like Ruroc are more focused on their motorbike helmets now

@@GarethDix unfortunetly I will not be uploading a video. I got my helmet + goggle combo from them and after using them a couple times in variable weather, they just aren’t that great. Ear pieces kept coming out, and the snood would pull off my ears when I’d put the helmet on and it wasn’t long enough so it would fold up and look weird leaving parts of my neck exposed. Also, after a wet day, the snood leaked ink all over my snowboarding jacket staining it around the neck area. The goggle clarity wasn’t that great and on a cold snowy day both lenses I ordered fogged up before getting on the lift. Also, on a really snowy day, the lens filled with a ton of water (probably just a defect though). Overall I was super disappointed, but Ruroc was nice enough to refund my money, so I can applaud them for that. I ended up getting one of Anons new wave cell helmets and their M4 goggle with MFI face mask and it’s a worlds difference from the Ruroc helmet + goggle combo. The helmet feels way more sturdy, and the lenses on the M4 use their new perceive technology which provides excellent optics. Also, the goggles didn’t fog up on me once while using them in different conditions. I would highly recommend going with an established brand instead of the Ruroc combo until they can add some real tech to compete.

Oh no! You should have uploaded a video on it. I’m about to do my next video on the goggles and comparing those to the Anon M4’s which I’ve been testing for the last 2 Months with both the perceive and sonar lenses. But I also tried a couple of different Anon helmets and preferred the look of the Ruroc and I agree on the clarity of the lenses on the anon’s but the fogging can be pretty bad, I have them fogging up whilst I’m standing around and when I was in a snowstorm they literally fogged up so badly I switched lenses then those fogged up as well so I had to switch to the Rurocs which were then fine. I think the Ruroc mask takes a little getting used to because if it moves down when you put the helmet on it can be really uncomfortable on the ears, but the anon MFI masks are awesome and I now have a few different ones. The leakage on the Ruroc mask isn’t good though, I haven’t had that with mine luckily as the first few times I wore it I was wearing my bright green jacket and would have been pissed if it had leaked. But I think that Ruroc are hopefully going to create a whole portfolio of goggles and helmets that you can mix and match like other manufacturers... But also think if they want to charge a lot of money for lenses, then they might need to up their game in the optics. Which anon lenses did you get? I have the Variable Green and Stormy Pink perceive in Toric and the Sonar Red and Sonar infra Red. I have to say I prefer the Sonar lens so far even with the colour cast on them, I can pretty much wear the Sonar red lens in most conditions until it gets dark.

@@GarethDix I’ve thought about it, but I’d feel kinda bad for ripping Ruroc after they were nice enough to refund my money even after I used the gear! Lol That’s interesting to hear your M4’s fogged up! I tried and tried blowing air up in my mask to fog them, but couldn’t get them to fog. I think the mfi mask fits my face well enough to not allow much air through, so it could be a fit issue. The ink coming out of the Ruroc mask definitely made me pretty mad because after washing my jacket multiple times, it’s still slightly discolored near the neck area. Glad to hear your experience with the Lite helmet is good overall though, because it really is a sweet looking setup. I have the sunny onyx perceive and the variable violet perceive, both cylindrical. Both have been fantastic and I haven’t had any issues with visibility. I have yet to test the variable violet in white out conditions yet though. For the helmet, I got the new Merak wavecell helmet from Anon in black, and in my opinion, actually looks even cooler than the Ruroc set up. (A lot more expensive though)

I mean it’s more your story on your experience no bashing needed. The Ruroc guys are great with feedback and always had a good refund policy. My friend just picked up that same helmet so I’m hoping to see what it’s like in the flesh over the next couple of weeks. But yeah the M4’s fog even when I’m not wearing the mask as originally I thought it was that as well but I run really hot all the time. Wait til you try those perceive lenses in a whiteout... it’s amazing how much you can actually see!

You can wear other goggles with the Lite Helmet, I actually use the Anon M4’s and My Oakley Fall Line XL because the optics are better but the lite goggles have probably the best airflow of anything I’ve ever used so they never fog up. Great review. That goggle price is hefty for sure. Maybe it will go down with time. I still think the RG1-DX looks cooler, this helmet can be its side kick maybe?

Yes definitely, I’ll still keep my RG1-DX helmets as I’ll be swapping between those and the lite. Definitely in the spring I can see myself wearing the Lite a lot more as I get pretty hot but I wouldn’t say one is better than the other necessarily they’re just different.

This is probably the biggest improvement they could make to the next version as they’re so easy to knock off. But whilst I was actually skiing I didn’t have any issues with them coming loose, only when you put the helmet on if you pull it on via the straps. It took a bit of getting used to but by the end of last season I wasn’t pulling them off anymore other than when I wanted to fold the helmet flat to attach to my bag etc

Hey Gareth, Im thinking about buying the Outrun helmet they have up right now, but Im torn between the Lite or the whole Lite System. Is it worth the extra $150 for the possibility of the bluetooth speakers mask and goggles? Or if Im already spending that much, would the RG1 be a better call?

The lite and RG1 are really different, the RG1 is like wearing full armour and being completely covered, but the lite is more like a normal helmet with great ventilation and fits lots of other goggles. For me the choice comes down to how you ski and the versatility of what you need. The RG1 series I love and the ventilation and peripheral vision to the sides is amazing (better than most goggles), but the vision top to bottom isn’t as good as other goggles. The Bluetooth is worth it if you want audio but on the RG1 DX you can make calls with it too as it has a mic but you can’t on the lite. The RG1 is a statement by itself in the way it looks but the lite is more subtle and you can mix it up more with other goggles and snoods etc. I think if you already have goggles you like I would go with the lite and just get the helmet. You can add goggles later if needed. Although they look really good and the ventilation is unmatched the lens technology isn’t as good as other goggles from smith Anon and Oakley (all which are similarly priced) But to be honest you can’t really go wrong… I have around 6 helmets and different goggles and lenses from Ruroc and they’re pretty decent, but just worth considering if you’re not in the U.K. you might have to factor in import duty that can’t be refunded.

Not really… you can wear them with the helmet but it doesn’t fit in an integrated way they are huge in comparison

Can u tell your headsize in cm? Last Video you said M/L seems to be perfect for you, but is there space left in it? or is it possible with the adjustment in the back to really tighten it up? Im on the Edge of M/L to XL/XXL (59/60) and i dont want to get marks every Ski Day because of a too small helmet and also dont want it to jump around

I’m around 57cm but only just and the M/L is perfect as anything smaller would feel way too snug. There is space but the boa micro adjuster makes sure it doesn’t slip around and I don’t even crank it right up. I think if in doubt I would go larger

Mein Deutsch ist nicht gut, aber ich lerne. Ich komme aus Basel-Stadt. Beide Helme sind toll, aber sind unterschiedlich. Der Lite hat mehr Sichtbarkeit und Sie können mit verschiedenen Brillen verwenden. Der RG1-DX ist Vollschutz. Wenn man eine Maske darunter trägt, kann es zum Beschlagen kommen, aber meine Freundin sagte, dass es nicht so schlimm ist und sie es nur an warmen Tagen bemerkt hat. Man kann die Helme nur online bestellen, ich kenne keine Geschäfte hier in der Schweiz, die sie zum Anprobieren haben.

Yes… I’m not sure how it would be with the goggle strap under the helmet but it fits pretty well with it over. The ventilation should still work too as the vents at the top are still exposed

If you get another RG1-DX you’ll still be able to use the goggles and lenses you already have. The lite is much more like a standard helmet that looks really good however you can use it with pretty much any goggles if you don’t get on with the Ruroc ones. I prefer the lite because it is just that, it feels a lot lighter and in the late spring likely to be a lot less warm, it’s also easier to carry around. I guess the only thing I miss is that extra protection so I’m a little bit more careful than I am when riding in the RG1-DX, not that the face guard is going to protect my limbs but you definitely notice it

What size is your helmet?. Do you have enough room to wear a toque inside?....i am asking this because i think the helmet that was sent to me (after 2 months of waiting) is to small even thoe i followed the chart that was provided

I use a M/L and have 57cm head so at the lower end of that size and there’s definitely enough space for a toque even with the lining inside but taking that out will give some extra space.

Yea ruroc have been in contact with me and providing me with all the nessesary papers for exchanging the helmet its just a bummer that i have to pay import duty /tax for the item coming to canada which is a spanking $75 off your pocket plus shipping.....i hope this helmet is worth the hassle

There’s a button on the right near your ear lobe... you can pull the pad off (it’s Velcro) to see it... it’s small but it’s there

The lite helmets aren’t certified for BMX use especially if you’re riding park. You need a helmet that’s ATSM F2032 certified. But if it’s a choice between not wearing a helmet and wearing this one I would wear this one

Hi, I like this Lite helmet but ears pad fuck this 🤣The right side ear to the lock good the left does not lock. I order all combo and waiting for 1,5 month and come whit this ear pad problem and in box I dont found balacnava😢 Now I want mony back. Better I wait next year maybe compani fix this ear pad problem

The ear pads are really annoying and maybe next year’s version will have a better clip... would be better if they just updated the ear pads so I don’t have to buy a whole new helmet. Drop them a message on the size and balaclava as they’re pretty good at getting those resolved
