Not everyone loves RUSH... but musicians, anyone who has ever played a musical instrument, loves RUSH. They are so intricate and complex technically it's hard for non musicians to appreciate what they are up to. Neil Peart and Geddy Lee are universally acknowledged as top players of their instruments... Alex Lifeson is too, but he has so much competition in the heavily saturated 'guitar gods' category that he often is underappreciated for his incredible skills.

I don’t why Brad focuses on the lyrics, since it seems like 99.999% of them are completely beyond him. I remember reading & understanding these lyrics when I was like, 9 years old. It never fails to amaze me that he’s a college graduate. Did he not take any English or literature appreciation classes while he was there? I could see his professor saying, “The quick, brown fox jumped over the lazy dog……Brad, what does that sentence mean to you?” And Brad responding, “……..I dunno….seemed pretty wild to me.”

@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 He is highly literal and analytical, and clearly intelligent. Due to that though figurative language does go over his head which would make assessing lyrics, or any creative writing, impossible. It's interesting to me that that's what he likes to do lol.

@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 No need to talk so badly about him. Just accept him for who he is. He'll probably never see this and probably wouldn't give a crap about what you think if he did, but there is still an old idea of common decency in the world. And a good rule of thumb is that if you wouldn't be willing to say it to his face then you probably shouldn't say it. He's still learning this type of music and is getting better. Cut him some slack, he seems like a good dude.

The third line tell you what it's about..."To Mold A New Reality." we need to use our hearts more than just logical thinking. It's like that bumper sticker "think globally act locally." To make the world a better place we all need to act closer to THE heart. This was written during the cold war when nuclear holocaust could happen at anytime....but, really, the message is timeless. I think Lex approached my understanding of the song: put more heart, compassion, and empathy into whatever you do. The imagery is interesting (of course - it's Rush). The lyrics begin with an exhortation to those who hold high places (i.e. those who hold the world in the palm of their hand) to be the ones who use those hands to mould & shape a better reality. And then there are the dichotomies: the blacksmith (who creates something for the sake of function) & the artist (who creates for the sake of form); philosophers (who work with their minds) & ploughmen (who work with their hands). And then the song finishes with a message of cooperation: you can be the one in charge and I'll plot our course. These themes of compassion & cooperation show Neil exploring other ideas besides his earlier forays into Ayn Randian individualism & selfishness.

The song is about not just compassion but living from your heart instead of just your mind. It's about a paradigm shift to a world that isn't just about money and power. It's about doing what your heart tells you. Many people live only in the cold gray world of making everything add up. That money solves all problems and the sorrowful cynicism that mindset breeds. Follow your heart... it will not lead you wrong.

And the men who hold high places refers to politicians all the way down to the farmers and tradesmen. The message is basically saying if society is built on the merits of the heart, we'd live in a better place (or something along those lines). Rush at this time was very prog in their music style and thus weren't writing radio hit song (short songs). Closer to the Heart was meant for radio play.

I love it when you guys do Rush. I'm a musician and a music lover and I listen to everything from Bulgarian women's folk music to panpipe music of the Indies to experimental classical music and everything in between. But I never get tired of Rush. They just seem like one of those genius bands that was so Innovative and real for their time and they were all monster musicians. It's interesting that Brad mentions 2112 because to me that's more or less right, because it's in That 70s era for them which is actually my favorite. However, it reminds me much much more of side B of the 2112 album. There are several stand-alone songs and each one is brilliant and really amazing. This could have easily been in with those. If you find a playlist for the 2112 album, it would be the five songs that are carafe ter the grand finale of the 2112 story. Below is a link to one of the songs from that, Sweet Memories. I remember when I first heard Rush, I had gotten high at a friend's house in ninth grade, and he had a little boombox with an 8-track tape player in it, and we listened to Hemispheres and then 2112 and I was so blown away. I'd never heard anything like that before. At first his voice kind of bothered me because it seemed high and shrill but something just clicked at some point and I quickly grew to love it. That is just his sound when he goes up that high but he is actually a really good singer. I have heard vocal coaches has analyze his singing like that and that's what they say as well. I also learned that he originally developed that, because when they were first starting out and playing the bar circuit in Canada, the amps were so loud that their cheap PA system couldn't get the vocals up loud enough to be heard over it, so he learned to just kind of scream in tune and with character. As you get into the 80s, he hardly ever sings high, just a couple phrases per song. Because their technology was so much better by then. But a lot of that early stuff too has him singing low on quieter sections of songs and it's always beautiful. I think the message is pretty simple. He just saying that if everyone from politicians and world leaders on down to the blacksmith's in farmers and everyone in between or to just live their life and excel at what they do governed more by their heart and a sense of humanity, the world could be a much better place. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4uan5SQgZ57ock

This has been my favorite song from my favorite band since I first heard it sometime in the late 70s. As I got older the lyrics made more and more sense.

To put it simply, endeavor to be a better more loving person. It doesn't matter how rich or powerful you are, you can be a good person and love others. But if you are rich and powerful, you can really make the world better if you try.

Dang Brad! Talk about telegraphing your disinterest. I gotta wait another 3 months fore another Rush track? You should be sent to bed with no supper! I vote for “Losing It” for the next Rush reaction, with a jaw dropping electric violin solo by FM’a Ben Mink. You’ll love it Lex, and we’ll drag Brad along, kickin and screaming. 😎

Message of the song….. doesn’t matter what your position is philosopher or ploughmen (someone pushing a plough or plow for farming) we should all do it “closer to the heart”, blacksmith and the artist, you’ll be the captain, I’ll draw the chart…. It’s about working together from a heart felt position. Many Rush songs have a deep message such as this. Musically all three members are super talented as well and they have a huge fan base. With this band diving into the lyrics will almost always make you say “wow…. That’s some deep stuff!”

This was on the A Farewell to Kings album from 1977 and followed the 1976 2112 album and this album had a little more classical and medieval nuances that 2112. Tush was always moving forward and exploring new musical ground. I think that besides their musical ability is why many labeled them "progressive". The song is about how we all should build a world on caring and empathy rather than power and money.

This song is about living life with your fellow man/woman in mind. Being part of a community that works together to acheive goals that benefit mankind. Neil's philosophy can't be more evident than in this song. He was a very liberal person who studied the works of Ayn Rand, who promoted OBJECTIVISM. RUSH even has a song called ANTHEM, which is the title of one of Rand's novels.

From "A Farewell to Kings". Geddy began to lower his register a bit. This was more accessible Rush and the album did well, reaching the top 40 album charts in the UK and USA as well as number 11 in Canada. Did quite well as the first single off the album.

One of the few Rush songs where the lyrics were not written by any band members. A friend of Pearts named Peter Talbot wrote these fine words.

It sounds like 2112 because they are both early Rush. They made a big change with Permanent Waves, and 2112 and Closer to the Heart are both pre-permanent Waves. As for Geddy's voice, he treated it like an instrument. In fact often the melody is accompanied by the same notes on guitar and bass, and accentuated by the drums. The more I heard his voice, the more I liked it. The amount of feeling he can achieve is amazing. You guys really need to listen to 2112 at least once (even if you don't make it into a video), in its entirety, with both the lyrics and the album liner notes so you can understand the pure emotion he achieves. You need to understand the story. Without it, and just reacting piecemeal to only parts of the song, you will never understand why people love it so much. I feel the same way about Pink Floyd The Wall. Reacting to a single song on that album is like reacting to five minutes of a 2-hour movie. Maybe you could explore a bit of time lapse or something to show your complete reactions to long songs and concept albums while keeping the video lengths managable.
