When I was with the Chromey crew, we had an Astronaut fan who took aboard a 6"x8" photo Chromey on STS-136. He was able to take a photo of the image on the window of the shuttle with Earth in the background. It traveled around the Earth over 200 times at 17,500 mph. That whole process took over a year for the photo to be returned to Chromey's owner to be framed. During the mission, we woke up the crew one morning with this song.

In 1981, we had two TVs in the family home, a 26 inch console and a 13 inch portable, both colour. For the launch, I set up the portable atop the console, so that I would have video from two different channels of the launch. It was magnificent. I was lucky in that in 1992 I was able to attend a launch at The Cape in person, STS-47.

The king of the drumming world. I grew up spending countless hours listening to Rush songs on MTV and Stereo Panama radio station from 1984- 1991. He wrote most of Rush song lyrics by adding a unique mix of ancient philosophy, comic books action sequences and strong messages that shaped my teenage years. The original video was awesome simply because Rush did something no other band had ever done. Music about a pivotal point in our history. This does make the whole musical experience a whole lot better. Well, a little perspective. The shuttle program was a set of really bad compromises both in terms of mission and technology. Countdown holds up as a reflection of the optimism about technology because this was the first launch and the pristine hope that this iconic spacecraft would mark a turning point in human affairs and change the game for everyone was still unblemished when Signals released. There was no infighting with the military or the congressional budget office, no systemic failure in planning, objectives or deliverables in the public sphere-no horrible fatal accidents with the loss of the vehicle and entire crew for all to see. To every one outside the KSC boardroom, STS-1 was the locus of the unbridled enthusiasm and wonder that Rush depicted in Countdown. This was a moment to cherish, when the mission of space fired everyone's imagination with new possibilities and if we're wise, then someday we'll get another and if we're lucky, another generation of artists will capture it the way Rush did this one.

I have a friend who is an astronaut and has been in space. I asked him if he knew of this song, and with a wide eyed grin, he replied - "every astronaut knows this song". Now how cool is that! Rush frames the excitement of the space journey so well, it had to register with these space pioneers as well! For the record, RUSH is living evidence that the Mozart's and Bach's of the past, still exist in modern times.

Thank you all for the kind words. It was truly a labor of love not only for the song and group but for the shuttle program itself. I had the privilege of getting to see the Endeavor do a night launch in the 90's. Something that I will never forget. Sort of like my first Rush concert. 😀

I was able to view a night launch in 2008, and saw it standing on the old earth "hump" besides the VAB where the old countdown clock was located. Even more than a couple of miles away from the launch, the force of the liftoff was making my pants legs whip from the sound force. Incredible stuff.

I was riding my motorcycle (a BMW just like Neil's) down to the cape for a night launch in 2009 but was delayed by a wrecked truck on I-10. Very solid effort. As a NASA contractor involved in the shuttle program, I very much appreciate the additional footage. I do miss two things, though... at the 3:50 mark of the old video, the slow rise of the shuttle and the bit of sideways slip is an awesome viewpoint. And to be honest, the best "crowd shot" was the guy giving a double fist pump at the 4:05 mark. Those were my favorites that hit the cutting room floor - but overall, extremely well done! And finally, that's the actual radio chatter. Loved the astronauts ending lines. :- )
@cygnux6 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked it. My favorite crowd scenes is the lady towards the end wiping happiness tears away. The fist pump guy is in there but your right he is in a different place now. As for the radio talk, for some reason that was extremely important to me. I watched and listen to hours of video in an effort to line things up the radio on the song with the actual radio and footage that was happening at the time. Glad someone other than myself enjoyed that part. In that process I discovered that it was the astronauts that played a song to ground control. I always assumed it was ground control playing it for the shuttle. I can't remember what song it was but it wasn't what I expected. For some reason I seem to thing it was a gospel tune.

Karen and I are of the Apollo generation and seeing a Space Shuttle launch was an ambition we shared. To see the tears form the young lady near the end of this magnificent video brings memories of that amazing day, made all the more sweet as the launch had been postponed the day before due to a thunderstorm. When looking up all of the historical footage, etc. I found the entire dialog from the flight. "And we enjoyed the music, Bob; thank ya'." "Ah, we enjoyed it; we just wanted to share somethin' with you." It was actually a song played by the Astronauts back to mission control. After years of searching and comparing the NASA audio from the song and from launch transcripts, I always wondered about one part. At 4:05 where SLC appears to say "Columbia houston you're go at 40", it actually says "... you're go at throttle up." Ridiculous point to get hung up on but I don't see the need for the edit in the song. Means nothing either way, it just stuck with me. And we enjoyed the music Bob, thank you...

I'm not sure. I did find most of the audio they used and started to replace all of it so it would be just a touch louder but decided against that. I thought it was interesting that the "And we enjoyed the music Bob, Thank ya!" was said from the ground. I always assumed it was for music played from earth to the shuttle but it was played on the shuttle back to earth. I don't remember the song but I think it was some country/bluegrass/gospel type song.

Check out 'Driven'. Probably one of their best videos.

Meh, around the time they started making videos (1977-81), the music video in and of itself was still very much in it's infancy. Most of them were pretty awkward and cheesy. Even the best ones were. Most of Rush's early videos I would hardly classify as "music videos" in the traditional sense. Stuff like Tom Sawyer, Limelight and Vital Signs were just them jamming in Le Studio. Subdivisions is the first real music video and it was really impressive. Countdown wasn't that bad either. I loved all the ones from P/G and Power Windows. They weren't groundbreaking but decent. Then...ooh, Time Stand Still. Boy if there's a video that takes the cake in terms of cringy, it's that one. Afterwards, the videos became generally darker and more gritty and still solid like Roll the Bones, Nobody's Hero and Driven.
