Neil's lyrics for Fly By Night were based on the time when he flew to London, England, to start his music career; after that fizzled out, he returned to Canada, where he was working in his dad's hardware store when he was invited to audition for Geddy and Neil, and the rest, as they say, is history. Another banger I'd like you to hear from this album is the leadoff track Anthem, which helped to seal the deal on him becoming Rush's new drummer after he nailed what would eventually become a part of it during his audition. Have a Merry Christmas, and Rush on! 🎄🎄🎄 🎤 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

Wow, that is so amazing. Kinda wild that the band came together that way, the world has a beautiful way of making things come together! Thank you for the backstory on this one as well as the e recommendation! I hope your having great holidays and Merry Christmas Eve🎄

It wasn't a hardware store he worked in, it was the parts counter for his dad's tractor dealership. He was the parts manager for his dad's International Harvester dealership.

They were so young here, around 22 to 23. This was their second album and the first one with Neil. Other songs Closer to the heart Different Stages Secret Touch from the Snakes and Arrows tour Caravan from the Time Machine Tour Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ☃️

Thank you for pushing Rush. I would say they are least tied for the top spot on the list of best bands over the last 50 years. You ought to try 'Freewill'.

@@RidiculousRic Thank you, too! I thought of another one. 'Working Man'. The live Cleveland version, where Alex plays the most shredded solo I've heard him play! Merry Xmas, 2024!

So glad you're focusing on Rush's compositional genius. Their use of complex chord structure, changes in dynamics, meter and tempo, the complimentarity of their parts, and their virtuosic performances (not to mention their erudite lyrics) makes them, for me, rock's only true "classical" hard rock band. On the "Fly By Night" album check out "Anthem" and "Beneath, Between & Behind" (or the entire album).

One of my favorite parts of this song was the fact that Neil pulled off the drums and used space between the cymbal work to give that part of the song am airy, floating, flighty sound.

The use of space on this track, and all of there music makes a significant difference to me! It’s definitely a necessity🙏🏼 happy holidays!🎄

After 40+ years of hearing this song, and nearly as long listening to Red Barchetta, my self claimed favorite Rush song, even though I find it difficult with Rush not to have a dozen songs tied for my favorite. If asked, Red Barchetta is my quick response to a favorite Rush song. But Fly by Night is the song I have probably listened to the most, and like most Rush songs, I never get tired of Fly by Night. It has a lot of personal meaning for me, just like it did for Neil when he wrote the song. And every time I hear this song, not matter the state of my life, it always makes me want to go on at least a road trip, if not just almost deciding to say, F it, it's time for a totally new start and new chapter in my life, wanting to really disappear in the night and leave it all behind for a new life, choosing a direction and just go until I decide to stop. Of course I'm single and have been my entire life, and I have done exactly that several times in my life, generally about every 5-10 years. Other songs that give me the same thoughts are Free Bird, Going to California. Which I actually listened to along with Fly by Night, over and over on a cross country trip from Chicago to Las Angeles back in '96/97. When I finally get tired as a freebird, songs like The Eagles' Take it Easy make me think about settling down in a new place and starting a new life for a while, maybe for good. That may be where I am at already, I'm 56 years old now, and own a home and land for the first time the last 9 years (10 good acres, half wooded, half prairie, it even has a creek through it, and a house I built myself, all fully paid), but I still get the itch to just leave and begin again anyway. If you haven't reacted to Red Barchetta yet, I recommend it for your reaction list, by the way. I think I've seen all you Rush reactions, but I'll double check.

They were so young here, but I do like this song; it's catchy. I think you made a great point about the slowdown; if it wasn't there, I think I would feel fatigue. :) I'm trying to think of a song I might not have requested yet: How about the live version of 'The Analog Kid' from the Clockwork Angels tour? Merry Christmas!!
@RidiculousRic6 күн бұрын
It is definitely catchy, but the slow down was also a necessity for me! It brings much more replay value and gives the listener a section to look forward too! I definitely have that suggestion on the list, thank you and happy holidays:)

They were young here. Only like 22. Idk what kinda bands sounded like this at such a young age. But imo they didnt really become rush until years after this.

@@RidiculousRic yeah they started rush when they were 15 so they were already together for 6 or 7 years by this point. But they didnt really start becoming legendary rush until the permanent waves album when they were around 27.
