Rush doesn't just write and play songs, they take you on a musical journey. I'm a veteran of 18 Rush concerts on 16 tours. I first discovered Rush on my 15th birthday in 1977, the first time I ever listened to "2112". I was hooked immediately, and have been one of those die-hard Rush fanatics ever since! \m/ \m/

I must have misheard. I thought she said "...that way" (which would be correct that they don't all come about in the same way or necessarily sound the same). Hmmmm, "...that well," though? Obviously, that's debatable among fans, but I don't think they did a terrible job on any of them. Rush is one of those bands that I can readily name plenty of songs (and not just from a single era) I love by them, while I would actually have to heavily scrutinize the discography to find any that I could maybe say I don't like to at least some degree. They are, indeed, _that great._ :D

Nice reaction! Alex Lifeson is definitely my favorite guitarist of all time, super underrated. Of course I equally enjoy Geddy and Neil as well.. Masters of their craft. Unfortunately Rush is not touring anymore, and the idea of any future shows is pretty unlikely. They announced their retirement from touring officially in 2018, mainly due to Neil’s physical problems from years of intense drumming and Alex’s arthritis. Geddy and Alex mentioned still wanting to play but since Neil first made it clear he didn’t want to continue, they didn’t want to continue touring without him. You can’t really blame them though after 40+ years. It’s sad as I never got to see them live, as I really got into Rush just as their last tour (R40) ended in 2015.
@Lightmane4 жыл бұрын
When you realize this is about nightmares that Alex was having, it takes on a whole new meaning From SongFacts: Despite being an instrumental, the song tells a complete story, complete with plot and characters. It's based on some nightmares Alex Lifeson experienced. Divided into 12 segments, as follows: I-- Buenos Nochas, Mein Froinds! II-- To Sleep, Perchance To Dream III-- Strangiato Theme IV-- A Lerxst in Wonderland V-- Monsters! VI-- The Ghost of the Aragon VII-- Danforth and Pape VIII-- The Waltz of the Shreves IX-- Never Turn Your Back on a Monster! X-- Monsters! (Reprise) XI- Strangiato Theme (Reprise) XII-- A Farewell To Things. Villa Strangiato is a real place in Italy. It was the home of the late Barone (Baron) Strangiato, an Italian nobleman

One of the best Rush songs. The live version on Exit Stage Left is the most amazing guitar solo ever. Love how this song builds and has so many time changes and different styles from mellow to happy to knock your socks off rock. Can't beat these 3 guys. They were my introduction into my love for music and wanting to learn to play guitar and because of them I've been to hundreds of concerts by so many different artists of all genres and have thoudands of CDs in my collection of music. Thanks to Rush who inspired my now favorite band Dream Theater. Of course bands like Genesis and Yes came before Rush but yes they were some of the very early pioneers of progrock. This is such an amazing song. First that just three people can create all this amazing music. Second that it was inspired by seven of Alex's nightmares, accounting for the several changes in pace and style. When originally recording it they played it dozens of times and still couldn't get it just right, taking parts of three takes for the album. It's truly amazing that they've actually been able to play it live since then.

You can tell by the lines in your face that it's almost a week now :P... I was introduced to Rush in 1976 with their 2112 album but their form of prog had to grow on me and it wasn't until 1980 with Moving Pictures that I really got into Rush. Hemispheres was the third album I bought from them and "The Strange House" is one of my favourite instrumentals. A true classic and personal favorite from Rush - I love what you are doing. This is an insanely complex piece of music; there are only a few folks out making stuff this technical. If you want to jump into the deep (and a little odd) end of the guitar player pool, check out Buckethead. He is one of the best guitar players ever; he plays metal, blues, jazz, funk, punk, country, folk, Spanish, avant garde, ambient, and is one of the best shredders of all time.

Rich jumping from air guitar to air bass to air drums reflects what watching this band live is like. All three are such spectacularly skilled musicians that it is hard to decide who to focus on at any given moment. I went to dozens of live concerts between 1975 and 1995. These three are as skilled as any I saw at their instruments. After locking in alternately on each one, I enjoyed defocusing on any one and just letting the ensemble wash over me. Seamless transitions, very complex but never overdone. I get the feeling that a lot of prog bands aspire to be Rush when they grow up, no disrespect intended. Rush is simply the standard.

Good idea to lure Kel slowly into Rush through an instrumental, Geddy Lee's high-pitched voice is definitely an acquired taste! Back in high school in Bethesda, Md. in the late 70s, we were all hanging out at a head shop where one of our crew worked after school. They had an overhead projector, and one day our friend told us he was going to let us in on a little secret that was going to blow our minds away. He pulled down the screen and turned on the projector. What we saw next was the first music video I ever saw: and it was Xanadu by Rush. The video is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXbYgKKDpdd3p8k My life was changed forever. There's a later live version on KZbin, from the Exit Stage Left show, which is awesome too. I think that version dates from 1981. Enjoy the trip back in time!

Neil studied with Freddie Gruber for over a year and changed from the matched drum stick grip to the traditional drum stick grip before recording "Test For Echo" in 1996. (I believe this is correct. Shortly after this, his daughter was killed in a car accident, and he left the drums for several years, until the release of "Vapor Trails" in 2002.) An interesting side note about his playing with Alex and Geddy after studying with Freddie Gruber for a year: When they started to record "Test For Echo," Geddy and Alex didn't really notice a difference. Neil thought that was a great compliment -- it's still me, but better & different. RIP, Neil. You were my inspiration to start playing the drums. I'm still trying to learn your songs after all of these years because I basically suck. Oh, well. Never give up; never surrender!

What's most amazing here and most noticeable is her professionalism. This video is literally a master class on staying focused against any and all (irrelevant) happenings in the music hall, ranging from audience behaviors, talking or yelling, to gestures, whatever -- and how to not let those impact you when no usher or security is available to help. Her professionalism is so apparent I might use this as a training video.
