This is, by far, the Rush fan anthem. Rush was considered nerd rock in the 80's. In the age of the guitar hero Rush was over looked. We all knew how great they were, but no one else did. Now, years later, they are finally getting respect.

Any one who grew up in the suburbs can relate to this songs lyrics. Also all the cliques in high school are well represented. Neil really new how to take real life topics and make it feel like he was conversing with every listener, through Geddy’s voice.

One of Neil's favorite drumming compositions (& mine too!). One of the songs he said he never "tired" of playing. I was 12 in 1982 when this song was released and aside from the musical aspect and sheer size of Neil's kit at the time (before electronic percussion began to replace his organic percussion), these lyrics were a perfect representative for awkward, kind-puberty/pre-teen kids like me. And as I would learn many years later, like Neil too! I was very lucky that by the time I reached high school in 1984-85, I was a very funny guy and learned that if you can make someone laugh, that (or those) humor over-shadowed any specific clique or group. And even the occasional girl liked me as well! But underneath all of that was this insecure, mullet wearing skinny kid who was funny and played pretty good drums. This song? Remains stunning to me.

Probably the best drummer ever and a guitarist and bassist that don't get the respect they deserve. Love to see you enjoying it so much as I am. One of my favorite songs of theirs is La Villa strangiato. There are no lyrics. But it is true brilliance. The version from Rio is mind-blowing. Thank you again and I love your show. Mark

Ok, you asked for it… My Rush Experience - first time seen live in 1981 (I was 14 yrs old and had just began playing drums about a year before) BLEW/MY/MIND!! Then (long story short) seen them live throughout the years another 6 times, the last time being their final tour 3 years before Neil passed. Today I’m 58 and a professional drummer with 2 albums out, and recently joined a new musical project with some former members of a certain successful band from here (Des Moines, Iowa) … I give 100% credit to Rush for any all influence that made me the musician I am today. I literally grew up watching them progress and change over the years… huge HUGE part of my life was spent learning from them. To see your reactions and watching your eyes light up hearing these songs for the first time is such a Time Machine for me … I WAS YOU …. I was in the audience, jaw on the floor, eyes like ping pong balls JUST AMAZED by their connection in a live setting… and I feel SO blessed I got to witness it IN PERSON

What a excellent choice to react to,... I teared up at the end of this one,.. happy tears ❤🎉😂🔥 . I also grew up in an Atlanta subdivision... relating to so much to the song is how Rush can touch our feelings and of course Neil was out front with his part of the music, which I love! Live appearances I was fortunate to see the guys.... August 79in Atlanta in the historic Fox Theatre.... October 82 Columbia S.C. in a packed arena,. and on my 40th birthday when my wife surprised me with front row by Alex at West Palm Beach Fairgrounds Amphitheater!!!! They played EVERYTHING 😁 Next to us was a disabled fan in a wheelchair when Alex and Geddy gave out trinkets and Rush shirts. Alex looked at me in an authoritative manner and pointed to the disabled guy so I knew the shirt he was about to toss is meant only for our buddy who can't walk. Alex made a perfect toss to him and smiled at us all for not jumping to grab the souvenir.. In 79 after the show I spent my last $5 on a 2112 belt buckle cause the shirts were $10.... and I've treasured that belt buckle, because Rush was in their silk robes era and Wow did they look mesmerizing and mysterious!!! Thank you for sharing! Love your expressionism and your channel is super fun!

I'm surprised people told you to react to the studio version over live. I'm partial to live performances in most cases because seeing them enhances the experience. Their shows were usually 3 hours long divided into two halves. In the time machine tour in 2011, this song closed the first half. I remember it vividly because that ending with the keyboards felt like an elephant sitting on my chest. It was awesome!

Yes, this was the chorus for my teenage years. Every word that Neil wrote for the song and every note Geddy sang resonated with me, hard. You should watch the video and react to that as well, just to see the story that went along with the music.

Love your infectious excitement reacting to the videos. I'm a long time Rush fan (since 1976), have seen them 26 times in concert, mostly in their home town of Toronto (where I'm from) and a few times in various U.S. cities......it's always amazing to see them away from their home town. If I may suggest, a couple of songs that you may enjoy watching are "Natural Science", which is the song right after the one you just watched and "The Camera Eye" from the Time Machine Tour. Hope you're enjoying the Rush rabbit hole.😁

This song - like so many other people, I was 16 when this was released and its impact at that impressionable age was titanic. Many of us remember being the not-so-cool; how that felt and our journey to fit in somehow. I found legions of friends at all of the Rush shows I went to (19), and once I got comfortable in my own skin, I discovered that being cool didn’t necessarily mean I had to like what everyone else liked. Solid reaction - so genuine. Great pick! ✌🏻

My preference in Rush era's, after being a fan a few years and collecting their albums, is whatever era of Rush I decide to listen to on any given day. You feel cheated? I cheated myself for 53 years! Minus half a dozen songs I heard on the radio back in the day, but since they were all I heard on the radio, I thought that must be the best of Rush and the rest in lacking, like many bands. I've been kicking myself in the ass for the last few years. And yes, I realize both of us have said this before, you in your reaction, and me in the replies. I pretty much know it all by heart now, but still left in wonder and awe every time I listen. Rush takes up 80% of my musical listening time, and Triumph 10%, everything else 10%.

Great song, and one that speaks to the band members (and young people, in general) during those trying times going through school. All three felt like "misfits", and the song speaks to that. Probably best to watch the original video to get a better idea. And as for a suggestion, you can't go wrong with maybe the greatest instrumental ever, "La Villa Strangiato" (original version). Or for something very different "Roll The Bones".

What you seldom see are the "Taurus" bass pedals (on the floor beneath the keyboards) on which Geddy plays bass lines whilst he's playing keyboards themselves (and singing). The dexterity and musicianship in Rush is top tier (and that's without the lyrics themselves). Also - keep an eye out for Alex's collection of Barbie dolls which sit next to his pedal board 😉

Absolutely beyond awesome song, it's truly true, what the song is saying, I was casted out into the nothingness of the ocean; but I put up my small sail and looked forward to where the wind would blow, it made me who I am and I wouldn't change a thing about the things that happened in the past, I wait when I have to or need to, but I do when I need to or have to or want to or an opportunity arises, I was like a hermit in a cave; but it was my house that was in the subdivision, I chuckle, but I would definitely have perfered a small beach house on an ocean beach, thank God for tv 📺 records and radio and books 📚 these allowed me to travel the world on my small boat on the sea that was my house 🙏 love those little extras too 🔥

Okay, Red. San Diego's resident Rushoholic here. I'll get back to "Conform Or Be Cast Out " in a bit. You can see, but barely hear Alex's vocal answer to Geddy's call of that quoted line. It comes out clearly on the original studio version of Subdivisions and on the official song video. Although Alex backed up some other vocals over the years, he's lip syncing Neil on Subdivision. The repeating of "Subdivisions" is one of the rare Neil vocal appearances in a Rush song. There's a little electronic processing of Neil's speaking voice which is a bottomless baritone normally. "Conform Or Be Cast Out" is the template for the Rush story (I'll renew a recommendation here to watch/react to the documentary BEYOND THE LUGHTED STAGE) and a frequent theme in their music. Their "Starman"logo is also nicknamed "The Man Against The Masses". When they started putting together 2112's 7 part suite (Alex is using that guitar here), their record company told them that would be their last album unless the songs were shorter and more "suitable" for radio. What they turned in instead was a metaphor for the struggle for individuality against the anonymous authority of conformity. In that story, the peasant is the band and the priests are the record company. Neil drew much lyrical inspiration from the work of H. R. Delaney for 2112's science fiction backdrop, but that "be yourself" message may be from THE SANE SOCIETY by Eric Frohm. These are in addition to the novel THE FOUNTAINHEAD and the novella ANTHEM both by Ayn Rand. Neil credited her on 2112's CD booklet which is lifted from the lyric gatefold sleeve of the vinyl LP record version of 2112. While you're looking for that record, even if you don't have a record player, you stay classy, Red...

This is the music of my adolescence!!! While I also loved all things metal, their music combined with more intellectual lyrics spoke more to me. Maybe some Iron Maiden as well. They are truly masters of their instruments. They helped change my approach to my own style of playing instruments as well (guitar, bass, and piano). I'm a professional session player and always cite them as a main influence. AWESOME REACTION RED!!! Cheers...🍻🤟👏
