Great ranking there Such a hard band to rank. My top 5 are 1 Hemispheres 2 Grace under pressure 3 Roll the bones 4 moving pictures 5 presto A bit controversial putting presto and roll the bones in top 5 But I just love them albums. Grace under pressure was the principle of the synth period for me. Power Windows and hold your fire, I think they just lost it a bit. I think as geddy says by hold your fire they were moving from being a Rock band. Of the 70s albums I find them to be all good. I think it is because Presto is where I came in to be a rush fan. Presto and roll the bones have a lot of affection for me. Vapor trails is for me the best album they did after roll the bones. And I prefer the original mix, it was so raw and heavy. Rush legends of music.

This time I write a comment before watching. Perfect timing, sir! I just had a beer and opened a second, hahaha.... Thank you upfront for taking the effort of ranking this great catalogue. My fave might be strange but it´s still "Counterparts". I was late to the Rush party and this is where I entered. Unfortunately Rush were never that big here in Germany early on so it took me until 1993 to fully digest the band.

Nicely done Darcy. I got into Rush in the early 1990s, late into there carrier. My favorite period is from Hemispheres to Signals. Back in the summer of 1999, I was at a chiropractor's office in Richmond Hill, part of the Greater Toronto area. I was waiting for treatment when Alex Lifeson walked in. He too was there for treatment. He was very nice and took the time to answer all my questions and give his autograph. We spoke about the recording process of Hemispheres and the status of the band at the time. They were waiting for Neil to recover from the death of his wife and daughter. I took a music class when I was a student at York University. The teaching assistant was doing his PHD on Rush at the time. I did a paper for this class on the band. He interviewed me for a book he wrote about the band.

Been looking forward to this one for a long time. I can see why it would take you a while to get around to doing this ranking Darcy. Probably one of the hardest discographies to rank as the albums are of a very high standard and there's at least a couple of great songs on each album. I'd liken it to Maiden or Queen with variety in the album styles, resulting in no list being the same. Good to hear your thoughts on the albums and some of your favourite songs. Some of my fav albums are: Power windows (that is #1), signals, moving pictures, 2112 and snakes and arrows.

Hey Darcy! Happy early Birthday! Hope you have an amazing day! Great job on the ranking I know I couldn't do it. Lol... I honestly love so many of these albums I have never really thought about which is my favorite. Power Windows, Test for Echo and Presto have always been my least favorite, and even Hold Your Fire back in the day used to bore me a bit. Through the years Hold Your Fire has actually grown on me a lot and I find myself listening to it quite regularly now. Caress of Steel I really like a lot and love the Necromancer song. Moving Pictures, Signals and 2112 were the first 3 Rush albums I ever owned and I still play them constantly to this day. Darcy take care my friend, have a great holiday and stay heavy!!!

Ready! Thank you Darcy, great video. Short afterthought: I´d love to see Alex and Geddy make some new music, I´d love to see them play old songs live but nothing of what the future has to offer should be called "RUSH". The two remaining guys have such a great humour, they will come up with a thoughtful name with a funny wink to the old moniker.

Thank you for posting you Rush favourite albums - its been a great half hour listening to you enthuse about these amazing albums. I honestly would struggle to rank them - I feel I'd have to group a top 5 but not in any particular order, then the next group of 5 or perhaps 7 or 8 😀, and so on - but they are all great in their own way. Like you, as a 16 year old I was handed a tape in 1984 of Signals and told to listen to it by my older colleague (old, well he was only 21 then...) - and that was it, I was hooked on Rush and have been ever since. It's very difficult to disagree with your top 5, I don't know what order to put them in though. Moving Pictures and Signals have a massive place in my heart though. I've now liked and subscribed. Please keep posting!! I'm in the UK by the way! 🙏👍👊

What's so great and telling about Rush, is that our rankings are different and in alot of cases our stand out tracks are different.... but we both agree that Rush has no bad albums! They are all at least good, and range from good to masterpieces imo I'm actually fairly new to Rush, been a casual listener and enjoyed them from Afar for about a decade until this year, I began to dive until their deeper catalog and realized how amazing this band really is! @mikel558211 ай бұрын
I generally agree. The 80s killed many great bands who moved towards monotonously mind-numbing drumming and schlocky rhythms. Genesis, Tull (who used a drum machine on a few albums), and even Neil succumbed to the push to appeal to the masses. The 80s marked the end of rock as a mainstream art form. One of my favorite bands! It's difficult ranking the Rush discography. No bad album from them, although I'd say their 2000's work is where they were at their worst IMO, but still not bad. Moving Pictures has always been on the top of the ranking for me, but other albums are really close like Permanent Waves, A Farewell To Kings, and 2112. All classics for sure.

Rush is probably a top 5 band for me. Love Rush. Moving Pictures is my favorite. One of my favorite albums of all time. 2112, A Farewell To Kings, Permanent Waves, and Signals are some of my favorite Rush albums. I think they have no bad albums. I do seem to like Hold Your Fire and Test For Echo more than some people. Not their best but I like those albums. Some pretty good songs on those like Force Ten, Open Secrets, Test For Echo, Time And Motion, Resist, Prime Mover, and some others. Interesting ranking.

Hi Darcy, are you familiar with Tiles? They are a great band from Detroit who are very Rush like. I'd recommend the first 3 discs: Tiles, Fence the Clear and Presents of Mind. They have worked with both Terry Brown and Hugh Syme. In describing Presents of Mind, Mike Portnoy said it was the record he was waiting for Rush to make! They opened for Dream Theater in Europe in 2020. I think you will like them.

That's a HUGE undertaking. For me, ranking the 70's catalogue is much easier. I kind of lost interest between 1983 to 1988. R.I.P. Neil. My No.1 is "2112", as it was the very first concert I've ever seen. My top 5 are: 5. Caress of Steel, 4. Fly By Night, 3. Rush, 2. A Farewell to Kings and 1. 2112.

This is the band of my life. My love for progressive rock started with them.2112, I played it till death. That title song wow. But after that Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, the underrated Caress of Steel of Steel and Fly by Night with the great Working Man. Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves are top of the Bill. I was 😢 with the death of the Professor,what a drummer and lyrics writer. But Geddy and Alex are such great musicians! Still miss them.After Rush I became a huge Dream Theater Fan, also a great band to rank.

I was aware of Rush starting around 82 or 83, but didn't like them at all until the mid 90s when I heard Spirit of Radio for the first time. Now I love almost all of their albums and they're one of my favorite bands. Permanent Waves would be my favorite, but it's almost tied with Moving Pictures for #1. 2112, Signals and Hemispheres round out my top 5.

Rush ranking is difficult. I disagree with a lot but I don’t think there are any wrong answers. 1) Clockwork Angels 2) Grace Under Pressure 3) Power Windows 4) Moving Pictures 5) Counterparts 6) Signals 7) 2112 8) Permanent Waves 9) Hemispheres 10) Farewell to Kings 11) snakes and Arrows 12) Fly By Night 13) Hold Your Fire 14) Vapor Trails 15) Presto 16) Roll The Bones 17) Rush 18) Caress of Steel

I was pretty much with you until the top nine, but really most of those albums are masterpieces. For me 1977 to 1985 was their sweet spot, the actual rankings are very arbitrary. One overall area where I would differ is I'd put the debut over everything that came after Presto!. And 'Fly by Night' would be right next to it, under everything that came in that 1977-85.
@JeffreyMusicRocks3 ай бұрын
Interesting, we have Counterparts and Clockwork Angels much higher, but totally agree on Signals and Moving Pictures - probably Hemispheres would complete our top 5.
@Tooncesthecatwhodrives10 ай бұрын
Not gonna lie at all, if I were to list them then my list would almost be the opposite haha. I love the albums from Signals and beyond (minus Test For Echo, it’s kind of a not as good album lol). I’m in the minority I feel when it comes to my love for their later albums! If I had to rank them then anything from Signals and beyond would be at the top and everything would be below it. I still love their 70’s albums though! Like 2112, debut, Hemispheres and Permanent Waves! I just love seeing how much respect you give to Vapor Trails as well, and it is their longest studio album, sitting at around an hour and 7 minutes. Cheers to everyone and have fun listening to Rush! Oh, and fun fact, Vapor Trails doesn’t contain any keyboards apparently!

Ohhhh i must be getting some years on me since i got into tgem in 1975 and i am one of the ones whom bought Caress of Steal which a friend had most all my favs are first album tho Moving Pictures lol .. first album and Permanent Waves being my least fav of the early stuff .. still like them tho , but personally actually kinda slipped back into a Bluesy/Rock style myself in this period of my life and a lot bands were kinda slipping into a synthesizer, commercialized phase , even though one of my best friends still kept loving Rush and he played Drums and teaches Drums and Bass, he would still be ass me newer Cd’s through the years and i could pick out likable songs and really goid ones here and there but never did I really like a mostly entire album after Moving Pictures just the way was for me i guess

I can easily see why many put Moving Pictures at #1, but I wonder if these people are musicians. I am a musician, and while a pleasing record in other ways, I became bored with Moving Pictures after only a few months. Hemispheres, however, still presents intricacies and revelations, after hearing it hundreds of times since it came out in 1978. Which is why it will always be my #1. Hemispheres was new then, and it is still new. THAT is the sign of a great record.
@darcysixstringsninelives34934 ай бұрын
I always say what you love has a lot to do with timing, those first few albums you got into a band with. Rush’s music is timeless to me, I’m always hearing something new or little intricacies here & there. You’re #1 is awesome! Thanks for the great comment 🤘 Cheers from Canada

I have been thinking about ranking RUSH over the past few days and here is mine ,with a caveat or two 19: ...Vapor Trails..never heard it on LP only as a CD ( not a fan of CDs) not heard the re-mix , it sounds muddy. Great songs, lousy production. 18: ... Clockwork Angels...never heard the LP again CD, too long and over extended, I think the story got beyond them and way too much production. 17: ...Test for Echo...no LP just CD...it's ok , I just think they started to slide on this one. 16: ...Snakes and Arrows...again no LP, nice rebound but still a downward trend. 15: ...Caress of Steal...great start for conceptual pieces, but had to start somewhere 14: ...Hold Your Fire...good stuff but the last two tracks keep this low 13: ... Hemispheres...fantastic idea ,to explore the heart vs. mind conundrum with music just seems off with the Cygnus prelude , Side II is Killer. 12: ...Grace Under Pressure...get past the first two tracks it's an out standing album. 11: ...2112...we are just about there as a society and I mean world wide but with a message of hope
