Album 1... Finding My Way (Rush) Album 2... Anthem (Fly by Night) Album 3... Bastille Day (Caress of Steel) Album 4... A Passage to Bangkok (2112) Album 5... Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage (A Farewell to Kings) Album 6... Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres (Hemispheres) They then perform in entirety The Spirit of Radio from their 7th album (Permanent Waves).

Wow, hard to believe. I've still got my original LP of it, possibly a first pressing.

The medley was created to showcase songs that they were no longer performing, either because they couldn't fit them into their set list or because Geddy was having difficulty hitting some of the high notes they required. For example, as I'm sure you know, Cygnus X-1 would have taken them half an hour to perform in its entirety, and included some of his highest notes ever; as he wrote in his memoir, while he was recording the vocals for the Hemispheres Prelude, he blew his top and stormed out of the studio when he realized that he'd written the music in a high key that required him to sing above his vocal range, after producer Terry Brown kept asking for "once more please" because he was sounding flat, and it took him a total of two weeks to get what they needed; and I recall reading in a previous forum that they never performed it live again after the Hemispheres Tour. Have a great evening, and Rush on! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐

I love that Jerry Stiller was such a Rush fan . His calling the band out makes me smile every time I watch this.

GREAT reaction Jone!! I saw this tour, here in Toronto (Rush's home), their 30th anniversary - it was an outdoor amphitheater, beautiful summer night, and this opening just blew us away!! Such a great medley of their early stuff, some deeper cuts (and likely some tunes that Geddy would have a hard time singing due to 'range'). It was a chronological journey up to 1980, when The Spirit Of Radio started. R30 Overture is what they called it - songs were: Finding My Way, Anthem, Bastille Day, A Passage To Bangkok, Cygnus X-1: The Voyage, Book II: Hemispheres - Prelude (check all these out individually, you won't regret it!) This R30 show is probably my favourite setlist! I have the Blu-Ray and have watched this the most of any of their concert shows. It was a truly magical night! Cheers from Canada, eh!

There are so many great live performances Rush did! If you haven't seen it already, I suggest reacting to the live version of 'La Villa Strangiato' live from Cleveland in 2011. Also, 'Leave That Thing Alone', also live from Cleveland. Both songs are amazing instrumentals.

Jone, I can see you are now a Rush fan proper. I see it in your eyes and the intensity with which you listen and react to them. I believe what sets Rush above the rest is not the obvious. Yes they are exceptional musicians with decades of experience and ideas in abundance covering many genres but I think Rush do not just go on stage and play. Everything is thought through to the last detail and they immerse the audience in the music that is written like a story. Everyone in that audience can personally relate to every Rush song being played.............they get it.............just like Neil, Alex and Geddy. Spirit of Radio like all Rush songs has a deep message, in this case music politics. Please read the lyrics and be amazed at the clever way they include the audience in their success and share the credit with them, you, us. Rush are so clever in the way they interact with the audience live but this is also the highlight to their relationship with the listener of their studio albums. I once read that they only recorded one track on each album that could not be reproduced fully live. Well if true then that also is stunning given the vastness of their work and the fact there are "only" three. Keep delving into the Rush archives Jone, you will constantly be surprised and impressed but most of all..............ENTERTAINED!!!

In later years they, wisely in my opinion, dropped most of the pre-Permanent Waves songs from the rotation because Geddy just couldn't hit those crazy high notes anymore. So an instrumental medley was a good way to go. Fine with me - my first concert was Rush on the Hemispheres tour, and we've got plenty of both audio and video recordings from when he could still hit the high notes.

Just so you know, 3,000 or so views of that RUSH video are mine. It just took me 4 days or almost 12 hours to learn that teach myself that intro, but I did it!!!! Haven't tried playing TSoR yet, seems daunting. Rock on everybody!!

I only saw Rush once in concert. Unfortunately the sound was terrible; way too loud with skull splitting treble. I had so much pain in my ears I couldn't wait for it to be over. I couldn't hear for 4 days after (and certain high frequencies I still can't hear). It was a real shame because they are my favorite band.
