YYZ is the airport code for Toronto Pearson International Airport. The begining has a different beat, because they are playing the Morse code for YYZ. It's an instrumental, but the crowd is making up their own song, singing the melody back to the 3 of them.

Just a refresher. Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass and Keyboards Alex Lifeson Guitars, Mandola Neil Peart Drums, Percussion and Main Lyrist YYZ is the indicator code for the Toronto International Airport. The beginning of the song is Morse Code for YYZ Alex Lifeson the guitarist is also a licensed pilot and was flying them back to Toronto when Geddy and Neil heard the indicator code come the radio and the beat stuck with them. I have a few more song requests Digital man from the Snakes and Arrows tour La Villa Strangiato official music video ( they play live on a set with out an audience) It is one of their masterpieces. This is such a great live performance and the enthusiastic crowd is a big part of it (how many times have you heard a crowd sing with an instrumental?). I just became a diehard Rush fan last year, after seeing the music video for their song 'Subdivisions.' Something about it just resonated with me (and unlike some Rush fans, as an 80's child, I love their '80s "synth era"). Anyway, I personally love watching people react to their live performances, where you can see them bring their complex music to life onstage. Here are some future live peformances you may want to react to (in no particular order): 1 .The Analog Kid (live from the Clockwork Angels tour) 2. Digital Man (Live from Snakes & Arrows tour) 3. Mission (live from Birmingham, 1988) 4. The Weapon (live from Toronto, 1984) 5. Natural Science (live from the Molson Ampitheatre, 1997) 6. La Villa Strangiato (Live from Cleveland, 2011) 7. The Main Monkey Business (Live from R40) 8. Secret Touch (live from Snakes and Arrows tour) 9. Driven (Live from Rio) 10. Leave That Thing Alone (live from Cleveland, 2011)

The best thing about this song, is that it was never ment to be a song to begin with! Neil (drums) and Getty (singer, bass, keyboard) were just messing around in the studio playing off each other. Alex (guitar) walked in and heard it. He loved it so much that he wanted to lay down a guitar track over it. That is why the only stop music solo's you hear are bass and drums. That's all it was to start! Also, if you notice there was a keyboard/synthesizer in this song but Getty never played one.... that was preloaded into a petal on Neil's drum kit and he could trigger it buy his left foot hitting it. So technically he's play drums and keys on many songs since the band is only 3 people and Getty needed to be on bass full time for this song.

Every international airport has a three-letter code used for navigation, and transmits a signal to incoming/outgoing aircraft over a radio transponder via Morse Code that they use to navigate. The code for Pearson International Airport in Toronto (which Rush used to fly in/out of regularly), is YYZ. The Morse Code for YYZ is dash-dot-dash-dash, dash-dot-dash-dash, dash-dash-dot-dot (. - . . . - . . - - . .). Neil Peart (pronounced "Peer-t", not "Purt") heard this signal when he was near the cockpit of a private jet when they were in Pearson, and thought it would be a cool drum pattern. Listen to the beginning and throughout the song to hear this pattern.
@SnowDogisVictorious15 күн бұрын
Actually, the International Air Transport Association has assigned three-letter codes to all international airports around the globe. The Canadians just decided to be weird as the IATA was being put together, ensuring that every single Canadian airport code would start with a Y. I figure it's because Torino, Italy had already snagged the "TOR" code...

People often say Neil either looks like Kevin Spacey or Tom Hanks. At different times, he looks like both...in these 50+ years, he looked nothing like either one in his 20's and 30's before he got chubby from good living. They used to do these comedic out-takes and play them on the screen on stage when they went on breaks or before the show, I've linked one below, and I guarantee you will agree that Neil (the one playing the Irish Cop) looks much more like an older Tom Hanks in this video: (skip to 2:28 for the beginning of the skit with Neil as a policeman) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXbNZYeVjKZ3ZtU

@@RebelOne66 If you remove Neil Peart's skullcap, he looks more like Kevin Spacey as they are both balding. But if you put a NY Popo style hat and uniform on him, and a mustache, like he wears in the comedy skit Rush does, in the link I provided, you will almost swear you are looking at a similarly aged Tom Hanks. Like in the movie Polar Express, even though that was a 3D animated version of Tom. But he's done other movies as an older gentleman with a mustache, etc. You will see the similarity instantly.

Just a couple of friendly corrections for you: 1. It's actually pronounced "Why Why Zed" by all the members of Rush. The only people in the English speaking world who pronounce "Z" as "Zee" are Americans (plus a whole bunch of Canadian kids who get corrupted and need to be de-programmed thanks to the infamous ABC song! ... but I digress.). 2. Neil's name was pronounced just the way it is spelled: "P - ear - T." You're pronouncing it "P - ur - T." 3. Re: Peart's surname, you should search up a clip from the Funny or Die KZbin channel in which Jason Segal and Paul Rudd reprise their roles in the movie "I love you man," finding themselves in Rush's private dressing room after a show. When the three members of Rush show up and confront them, one of the funniest exchanges between them involves the pronunciation of Neil's surname.

I was born in 1962 & have grown up listening to all the great music & real talent, especially prog-rock. In order to make it in the music industry you had to be able to make good recordings & be able to play live. That meant learning your instrument & having a true singing voice. What have we got today? Miming, auto-tune & Taylor fucking swift. How sad.
