This song was written and recorded prior to the passing of Neil’s wife and daughter, so it is not about them. According to Geddy, “That line to me says really says so much about the people, really that move the world, you know, the people that go out there and do what has to be done. And they're not worrying about what it's going to cost them personally down the road, they're doing what has to be done, and they're prepared to pay the price for it without worrying about.... the payment that comes later." And Neil said, “To me, it just means go for it. There are no failures of talent, only failures of character. I think that's often true too. Sure there a lot of talented people who don't achieve artistic or worldly success, but I think there's usually a reason - a failure inside them. The important thing is: if you fail once, or if your luck is bad this time, the dream is still there. A dream is only over if you give it up - or if it comes true. That is called irony. We have to remember the oracle's words, from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory and lumpy athletic shoes: Just do it. No excuses."

Bravado is my number one go to song by Rush. When I need a Rush fix. Alex's solo is fire to the soul. You got my subscribe. Great to see a father and daughter sharing this beautiful song. 46 years a Rush fan.

Do I remember right? I seem to recall that Neil passed away just months apart from Eddie Van Halen passing away. It was also during that Covid debacle so it was a dreary time for us all. Neil and Eddie passing so close together felt bad and made me feel old. My beloved artists are starting to pass away. But alas, there are SO MANY young fans of good music now! There is nothing better than watching a younger kid get into Rush. And a father/daughter duo is the coolest thing ever. TY

I'm just so grateful that most of my favorite bands lasted for decades and live(d) long and prosper(ed), juxtaposed by so many classic bands with too short of careers and discographies due to unexpected death or breaking up for whatever sad reason. Because of my tastes in bands, my favorites were with me for most of my life, releasing new material and touring. Sure I have a couple favorite bands that lasted less than a decade and maybe they only have a discography with half a dozen albums, give or take. But Rush and Van Halen, Tom Petty and a few others I won't bore you by listing, I grew up and grew old (55 yrs so far) with. And my favorite bands list tips the scales toward decades and large discographies, comparatively. Though I must admit that a couple of those favorite bands I did discover only in more recent years, so I grew up with them around, maybe heard a song or two, but didn't get into or discover until they and I and grown old (but still around).

@@mattbaker5757 We rejoice anyone's life more than we mourn their death, because we rejoice their life in the first place. And, obviously, we take that sentiment to our own lives and get deep and introspective unto ourselves. And isn't that the story? Everything on this planet dies, but the LIFE is so so special; when it becomes, when it lives and survives against the odds.

Great reaction!! This song has always got me in the feels...and now I'm 33 years on from when it was released, it gets me misty eyed. Beautiful, emotional, powerful song! It was out 6 years before his wife & daughter passed. The entire album deals with the nuances of life - so this was where Neil's focus was. The tragedies to come were certainly not known. I've always loved this song live! Cheers.

I'm wondering if you might have been thinking of their song Ghost Rider, which was also performed during this show, and which was based on what happened after Neil's wife and daughter died, and he took a break from the band and rode his motorcycle all across North America as he worked to process his grief; Neil was also a best-selling author, and he wrote a book of the same title chronicling his journey, which makes for another amazing read. Neil passed away from brain cancer just over four years ago, but the impression he left on the music world lives on. Rest in peace Professor. 🥁 🥁 🐐 🐐

I turned my daughter on to RUSH, she turned me onto Coheed & Cambria! I saw them 6 times in the mid 70's to early 80's, my daughter saw them in 2007, I think. This is a song up there with The Garden! If you haven't reacted to The Garden, do a live version with the strings on stage with the band!!!

Thanks for sharing your reaction! I love the joy and happiness you project, and I hope you'll cover more Rush songs! Neil lost his daughter in 1997 and his wife ten months later, whereas Bravado was released in 1991. I think the meaning of the song was more generic -- about overcoming adversity, facing failure, and why we should even try at all. I don't think Neil had a driving reason behind the creation of the song outside of fitting within the overall theme of the album, "Roll The Bones."

@@rumourhats U2 definitely had more songs on the radio than Rush, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they were more popular. It just meant their songs were more radio friendly. I bet the amount of Rush fans far outweigh the amount of U2 fans, even in 1991

@@caryd67 Well, it was a more inferred question. Rush in 70s ->> Yes, Genesis Rush in 80s ->> The Police, New Wave Rush in 90s, 00s, 10s ->> Grunge, Primus, U2, Tragically Hip, Tool. Rush has always tried to meld into what is current, and central to "pop culture". it is very, very unlikely U2 who began in 1979, would have copied Rush when conceiving of their basic post-punk style. Just accept that Bravado is Rush trying to do Without Or Without You, and we can both move on.
