RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

Saw Rush on the Hemispheres & Permanent Waves tours. They first played the entire Hemispheres album, then played the entire 2112 album!! The Encore was "Anthem" taken from Ayn Rands' novella of the same title. For the Permanent Waves, entire PW album, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, Xanadu, Fly by Night, Working Man, Closer to the Heart, Bastille Day, The Necromancer. Encore included Lakeside Park and Finding My Way. My friends and I each wrote the track lists on our arms to see who was most Stoned (acid was good back then...) We compared each others arms the next day and put the final sequence together. Most of those friends have entered the doors of Valhalla. They are sorely missed....

There is trouble in the nervous system And the nerve cells all have fled As the neurons scream 'oppression!' And the brains, just shake their heads So the neurons formed a union And demanded equal rights 'The brains are just too greedy We will make them give us spike Now there's no more brain oppression For they passed a noble law And the neurons are all kept equal By infections, seizure, And stroke

It's the interesting thing about Prog Rock bands like RUSH. Many of the themes they write about are struggles man has faced throughout history. This song touches on the theme of 'Equity' and how it's often used to the detriment of the successful. After all, hacking down trees to bring in the light only seems fair,..if you're not an oak. 🤔 RUSH, they ARE a thinking man's band.
@Greg-io1ip4 ай бұрын
It's laying blame and criticism of the workers (Maples) for whining. Oaks (wealthy bums) for greedily stealing all the Light (money). Since they can't get along, they made a bad government together, which cuts them down to a lower standard and becomes an authoritarian government (with hatchet axe and saw weapons to keep them all stumpy). It has no solution, but is saying those with the most abilities to avoid problems (The Oaks) should share the Light (wealth) if they want to avoid getting chopped down by the angry poor and working class Maples. Now more than when the song came out: Oaks are definitely in charge and don't care about a proper, simple good government everyone understands and benefits by. It's built to give the Sunshine To The Oaks (and the weeds below).

Hemispheres album cover is telling the listener that the music is about the mind, not Earth's Equatorial Divide. Although that is tertiary, it's saying the division of society is in our minds and if we ourselves don't fix it, the militias will come in and lower everyone into substandard living conditions to stop the complaints. "...all kept equal by hatchet, axe and saw." Because we couldn't get along and focus on policies and government services. Everything about who believes in what instead of using the taxes to benefit the masses, especially the working class (Maples). The Oaks are rich and powerful and don't care about all that 'government safety net and equal opportunity nonsense!'. If both sides complain too much instead of resolving the problems, big government will chop everyone down and take all the lumber (wealth) to fuel the military to keep us all oppressed. The wealthy are who have the most options. So partly the song is guilty of blaming the government ...but is also correct for saying the government has a role in appealing to the Oaks to share the light (money and power). But the video is pretty lame in not adding any elaboration or value to the meaning of the song. Rush fans remember the Hemispheres brain logo and meaning. This song needs some video that shows the person who posted it has an understanding of its meaning.
